The potential of micro-hydropower generation has been evaluated in seven community-owned rural water supply networks (CORWSN) in Ireland. The replacement of the existing infrastructure in place to reduce pressure in the networks with micro-hydropower turbines (Scenario 1) was considered. New potential locations for additional pressure reduction were also considered (Scenario 2). An assessment of the energy potential and economic viability of each site was carried out, including quantification of leakage reduction impacts. While only one of the seven CORWSNs showed two potential sites with power higher than 1 kW, the power generated can still have significant impacts on local energy demands. The estimated total energy saved in Scenario 2 ranged from 0.63 MWh year−1 to 84.5 MWh year−1 according to the micro-hydropower potential in each CORWSN. Furthermore, water savings from 4348 € m−3 to 73,264 € m−3 were estimated due to the reduction of leakage volume after installing micro-hydropower turbines at the potential sites detected in Scenario 2. Thus, the water cost saving associated to the reduction of leakage volume makes the incorporation of this element in the networks feasible.

Ageing of water supply networks is a real problem which leads to leaks and bursts. A great challenge is to discover the state of degradation of the buried pipes. This paper describes the knowledge of Veolia Water – SADE of a non-destructive technology to inspect cast iron water pipes and the methodology developed to define its performance in terms of probability of detection of defects.

The implementation of strategies for controlling water leaks is essential in order to reduce losses affecting distribution networks of drinking water. This paper focuses on leak detection by using vibration monitoring techniques. The long-term goal is the development of a system for automatic early detection of burst leaks in service pipes. An experimental campaign was started to measure vibrations transmitted along water pipes by real burst leaks occurring in actual water supply networks. The first experimental data were used for assessing the leak detection performance of a prototypal algorithm based on the calculation of the standard deviation of acceleration signals. The experimental campaign is here described and discussed. The proposed algorithm, enhanced by means of proper signal filtering techniques, was successfully tested on all monitored leaks, thus proving effective for leak detection purpose.

Abstract Daily exploitation of the water network, collecting of data concerning the failure of water pipes and knowledge of the repair team are the basis of the data used in the process of effectively removing and identifying failures. The paper proposes a methodology to identify the risk of failure of the water supply system that uses risk indexes according to the proposed three-stage scale of risk levels. An example of application methods for the actual operational data broken down by analysis and risk assessment for bus cables and a separate analysis for the distribution network.
