The world has not been able to achieve minimum greenhouse gas emissions in buildings’ energy consumptions because the energy and emissions optimization techniques have not been fully utilized. Thermal comfort is one of the most important issues for both residential and commercial buildings. Out of the 40% of global energy consumed by buildings, a large fraction is used to maintain their thermal comfort. In this study, a comprehensive review of the recent advancements in building energy conservation and efficiency application is presented based on existing high-quality research papers. Additionally, the retrofit of the heating/cooling and hot water system for an entire community in Cyprus is presented. This study aims to analyze the technical and environmental benefits of replacing existing electric heaters for hot water with heat pump water heating systems and the use of heat pump air conditioners for thermal comfort in place of the existing ordinary air conditioners for space heating and cooling. One administrative building, 86 apartments (including residential and commercial) buildings, and a restaurant building is retrofitted, and the feasibility of the project is determined based on three economic indicators, namely; simple payback period (SPP), internal rate of return (IRR), and net present value (NPV). The electrical energy required by the hot water systems and the heating/cooling system is reduced by 263,564 kWh/yr and 144,825 kWh/yr, respectively. Additionally, the retrofit project will reduce Cyprus’ CO2 emission by 121,592.8 kg yearly. The SPP, IRR, and NPV for the project show that the retrofit is economically feasible.

In this work the temperature-enthalpy profile and the exergy loss profile are used together to improve thermodynamic efficiency of distillation columns, by identifying possible benefits of using side exchangers. The method proposed is to compute the exergy loss profile and to analyse the distribution of the losses across the column stages. The present work aims at applying the stage-by-stage exergy analysis to the distillation of non-ideal mixtures, e.g. methanol/water. For these systems the use of thermodynamic excess properties is required: Gibbs free energy for phase equilibrium and enthalpy of solution for energy balance. Initial studies showed that the enthalpy of solution has a small effect on the overall energy balance of the distillation column, but a significant impact on the exergy loss profiles. Some profiles even showed a violation of the second law of thermodynamics, with entropy being destroyed on some stages, clearly indicating that a wrong approach to exergy calculation was being used.A model for exergy calculations of non-ideal solutions is presented. The exergy values so computed are then checked by a consistency test, using the reversible column profile. Finally, the exergy procedures are used to study a typical methanol/water distillation columns, where the exergy profiles are used to identify scope for intermediate heat exchange.

Coal mine drainage, exhaust air and bathing wastewater, etc. contain a large amount of waste heat resource. Using the waste heat effectively is beneficial to achieve energy conservation and emissions reduction and improve economic benefit for coal mine. Heat pump and heat pipe are thermal devices recycling waste heat effectively. The ways and purpose of recycling waste heat in coal mine by using water-source heat pump, air-source heat pump and heat pipe exchanger is given. The performance of heat pump and heat pipe is briefly evaluated.

China is a big industrial energy consuming country. The largest proportion of energy consuming is the operations of separation in chemical industry, and the energy consumption of the distillation is the highest in separation. Therefore, it is very important to research energy-saving issues of the process of distillation in today's circumstances of the energy shortage. This article describes the model of heat pump distillation column, and its characteristics, uses static simulation programs to simulate operating conditions in the atmospheric pressure for the benzene-toluene material system, and studys effects of the different feed states on the energy-saving of heat pump distillation column. The results will be compared with the conventional distillation column, and it was showed that for benzene-toluene system, the heat pump distillation column is more remarkable than the conventional distillation column in energy savings, and its energy saving rate can reach 46%.
