Microstructure plays an important role in obtaining the desired properties in metallic materials in general and aluminum alloys in particular. Mechanical properties of aluminum alloys can be significantly altered by changing the microstructure. No other alloy system can boast of as many temper conditions as aluminum alloys. With the progress in the understanding of microstructure–mechanical property relationships in these materials, “tailor made” alloys to meet specific demands are being industrially developed. The broad spectrum of aluminum alloys in wide range of temper conditions offer materials with widely varying mechanical properties for structural designers. In order to select aluminum alloys with the desired properties for the intended application, it is essential to understand the role of microstructure under actual service conditions. It is in this context “Metallography of aluminum alloys” becomes very important. This chapter provides an insight in to the microstructural evolution of aluminum alloys from the as-cast condition to the final product. Typical examples of microstructural evolution in different aluminum alloys under various thermomechanical conditions are presented here. An atlas of microstructures of commercial and experimental wrought and cast aluminum alloys is presented in an appendix to this book. This appendix includes optical photomicrographs of both cast and wrought alloys and scanning electron micrographs of polished surfaces as well as fracture surfaces of various aluminum alloys as well as transmission electron micrographs as separate annexure. Readers are encouraged to go through the optical microstructures and fractographs along with this chapter for better understanding of the evolution of microstructure as a function of alloying additions, thermomechanical processing conditions, and fracture behavior under tension.

A model has been constructed for the microstructural evolution that occurs during the annealing of aluminum alloys. Geometric and crystallographic observations from two orthogonal sections through a polycrystal using automated Electron Back-Scatter Diffraction (EBSD) were used as an input to the computer simulations to create a statistically representative threedimensional model. The microstructure is generated using a voxel-based tessellation technique. Assignment of orientations to the grains is controlled to ensure that both texture and nearest neighbor relationships match the observed distributions. The microstructures thus obtained are allowed to evolve using a Monte-Carlo simulation. Anisotropic grain boundary properties are used in the simulations. Nucleation is done in accordance with experimental observations on the likelihood of occurrences in particular neighborhoods. We will present the effect of temperature on the model predictions.

The Relationship

The microstructures and properties of 2024 aeronautical aluminum alloy subjected to thermal cycling were investigated in simulated Low Earth Orbit space environment. The experimental results demonstrate that the microhardness of aluminum alloys changed with the increasing of thermal cycles. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) show that the property changes of the 2024 aluminum alloys during the thermal cycling period are closely related to the microstructural evolution. The relationship between the microstructural evolution and the thermal fatigue was also discussed.

Recent 7xxx aluminum alloys have been designed for the finite use of thick semiproduct with contolled amount of constituent phases which mostly evolve during ingot preheat. In this study, the effects of constitutional change and preheat conditions of 7175 and 7050 type alloys on the evolution of constituent phases [M-, T-, S-phase and dispersoid] are presented. The constiuents evolve depending on the constitutional effect, primarily the change of Zn:Mg ratio, preheat condition comprising temperature and cooling rate following preheat. T- and M-phase are reprecipitated during cooling after preheat, depending on the alloy constitutions. S-phase is evolved depending on the constitution and preheat temperature, rather than preheat cooling rate. Prominent precipitation temperature interval of constituents are discussed in view of quaternary phase evolutions. In addition, evolutions of dispersoids together with M-phase are discussed. Specific alloy designs and preheat conditions could provide controlled microstructures for the thick 7xxx semiproducts.
