Palavras-chave: Educação a Distância. The educator can use them to lead the teachinglearning process, promote student autonomy and encourage collaboration. So, knowing what the main e-learning tools are used in and out of virtual learning environments is interesting. In this qualitative case study, the aim was to identify the tools utilized in teacher’s training courses offered by two Brazilian institutions. The research theoretical scope was to know the tools used in the tutorial activity in different teaching-learning moments – interaction, monitoring and evaluation. Perceptions of 88 tutors were obtained by on-line questionnaire. This work is justified by the continuous need to provide recent data on the use of technologies in e-learning, which makes it possible to recognize the evolution in their use. Several internal and external virtual environment tools were used by tutors in their activities. The interaction between tutor and student, very important in e-learning, takes place through forum or message. Marks and reports were usually employed to student monitoring. The most common evaluation tools were forum and tasks. Comparing the work’s results with other studies, in the sample’s scope, there was little evolution in the use of internet-based technologies, perhaps by tutors prioritizing the traditional tools existing in the virtual environment. Keywords: E-learning. PurposeVarious studies around the globe indicate lack of soft skills in engineering students, graduating from universities, although the bulk of studies in various disciplines indicate an improvement in various skills through implementation of a problem-based learning (PBL) approach. The purpose of this paper is therefore to identify and determine the effects of PBL in improving and developing soft skills, conflict resolution traits and aspects of enhancing group learning in undergraduates.Design/methodology/approachA study with mixed methods was used, involving questionnaire, observation and document analysis. A total of 57 students from different faculties participated in the semester-long study. Pre-tests and post-tests were administered at the beginning and end of the study. The researcher attended all the classes to observe systematically the teaching-learning process and its outcomes.FindingsThe findings revealed that PBL has a significant effect on improving students’ soft skills and enhancing group learning, including overcoming communication conflicts.Practical implicationsPractical implications of the study involve the enhancement of generic skills of the engineering graduates with the student-centered and interactive methodologies like PBL and e-learning applications.Originality/valueThis research endeavor stands unique due to its usage of e-learning tools in the PBL classroom learning such as Schoology, Padlet, videos, internet surfing. Another unique feature of this research is the holistic nature of the study, i.e. the measurement of a number of soft skills, traits and group learning skills that are not focused in other studies of engineering.

The benefits of e-learning in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) are huge. The outbreak of the dreaded COVID19 pandemic has forced schools, colleges and universities to temporarily remain closed to fight the contagion. E-learning or online learning is a learning method which has been employed in such a difficult scenario to continue the teaching-learning process. E-learning uses various tools and systems to optimize the teaching-learning process through online platforms. For teaching ESL, the teachers should explore collaborative learning, communicative language teaching, and communicative task-based language teaching to enable learners to effectively participate in the e-learning process. The use of these approaches engages the students to interact and perform the assigned tasks enabling them to effectively learn the language in the online platform. The paper explores the various e-learning practices into making effective teaching of English as a second language. Various e-learning tools like the internet, video conferencing platforms like Zoom, Google Meet and Webex, Google Classroom, YouTube, podcast and vodcast, online-boards, mobile phones, and social networking sites like WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter are explored to efficiently teach English as a second language. Further, the study investigated and analyzed an ESL classroom where various e-learning tools are used.
