Abstract In the region lying between Salerno and the Ofanto river on the north and Cetraro and the gulf of Tarento on the south and southeast, the south end of the Apennines merges into the structural pattern of the western Mediterranean region (southwestern Italy-Sicily-North Africa). After a cycle of sedimentation, tectonic deformation, and erosion extending from Triassic to upper Oligocene, a second cycle began in the late Oligocene and earliest Miocene. Mosaic faulting, in general based upon major structural features of the earlier cycle, occurred throughout the entire southern Italy-North African region. The age of the quartzite flysch remains unknown but is probably Jurassic-Cretaceous.

Description is given of the structural pattern in the southern part of the North Greenland fold belt between northern Nyeboe Land and Adolf Jensen Fjord. The structures prove to be of thin-skinned fold-and-thrust type with southeriy vergence, quite distinct from that of the north-verging, multiply deforrned orthotectonic zone to the north.

The effect of the position of lines on length estimation was investigated. 40 5-yr.-olds were asked to compare the two arms of an L-shaped figure presented inside circular frames of different diameters. For each figure one of the arms was on the axis, that is, the diameter, and the other arm was perpendicular to that axis. In making perceptual judgments about the relative length of two lines the children tended to describe the on-axis line as longer than the off-axis line. This illusion which, presumably, reflects a perceptual force induced by the characteristics of the structural pattern, supports the context model of visual anomalies.
