A study on the fatigue behaviour of friction stir butt welds of 3mm thick 6082-T6 aluminium alloy was carried out. Monotonic tensile and cyclic tests of welded joints and base material were performed to understand the influence of the welding process on the static and fatigue properties. Microhardness profiles were measured and fatigue crack growth curves were determined for cracks growing in different locations of the weldments. Friction stir material exhibited lower strength and ductility properties than the base material. However, an enhanced crack propagation resistance is observed.

Self-piercing riveting, as an alternative joining method to spot-welding, has attracted considerable interest from the automotive industry and has been widely used in aluminium intensive vehicles. One of the important factors that need to be considered is the effect of cyclic loading in service, leading to possible fatigue failure. The previous work reported in the public domain on the behaviour of self-piercing rivets has mainly focused on static tests. The work which is reported in this paper is concerned with the fatigue behaviour of single-rivet joints, joining two 2mm 5754 aluminium alloy sheets. The investigation also examined the effect of interfacial conditions on the fatigue behaviour. A number of fatigue failure mechanisms were observed based on rivet fracture, sheet fracture and combinations of these. The investigation has shown that they were dependent on the applied load and the sheet surface condition. Three-parameter Weibull analysis, using Reliasoft Weibull ++5.0 software, was conducted to analyse the experimental results. The analysis enabled the prediction of early-type failure (infant mortality failure) and wear-out failure patterns depending on the condition of the self-piercing riveted joints and the alloy sheet surface.

The article presents the results of research on low cycle fatigue strength of laser welded joints vs. non-welded material of high-strength steel DOMEX 700 MC. The tests were performed under load controlled using the total strain amplitude ɛac. The operating principle of the special electro-mechanic fatigue testing equipment with a suitable clamping system was working on 35 Hz frequency. Fatigue life analysis was conducted based on the Manson-Coffin-Basquin equation, which made it possible to determine fatigue parameters. Studies have shown differences in the fatigue life of original specimens and laser welded joints analysed, where laser welded joints showed lower fatigue resistance. In this article a numerical analysis of stresses generated in bending fatigue specimens has been performed employing the commercially available FEM-program ADINA.

— For fabricating light weight structures, it requires high strength-to weight ratio. AA6061 aluminium alloy is widely used in the fabrication of light weight structures. A356 aluminium alloy has wide spread application in aerospace industries. Friction stir welding is solid state joining process which is conducting for joining similar and dissimilar materials. The friction stir welding parameters play an important role for deciding the strength of welded joints. In this investigation, A356 and AA6061 alloys were friction stir welded by varying triangular, square, hexagonal pin profiles of tool keeping the remaining parameters same and AA6061 alloys were friction stir welded by varying tool shoulder diameter as 12mm,15mm,18mm without changing other parameters. Tensile properties of each joint have been analyzed microscopically. From the experimental results, it is observed that hexagonal pin profiled tool and 15mm shoulder diameter tool provides higher tensile properties when compared to other tools.
