Objective: Neurocognitive impairment is considered a core feature of mood disorders. Research has shown that neurocognitive impairment often persists beyond mood symptom resolution and can have significant deleterious effects on interpersonal relationships, academic achievement, occupational functioning and independent living. As such, neurocognitive impairment has become an important target for intervention. In this systematic review, we aimed to examine the extant literature to ascertain whether current standard evidence-based psychotherapies can improve neurocognitive functioning in mood disorders. Method: Studies examining changes in neurocognitive functioning following evidence-based psychotherapy were identified using MEDLINE, PsycINFO and Web of Science databases. Given the heterogeneity of study procedures, treatment protocols and patient samples, a narrative rather than meta-analytic review technique was employed. Results: Nineteen studies (21 articles) met inclusion criteria. There was preliminary evidence of improved executive functioning following evidence-based psychotherapy for Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar Disorder. There was also some signal of reduced negative biases in emotional information processing following psychotherapy in depression. Due to methodological variability across studies however, it was difficult to draw clear conclusions. Conclusion: Findings from the current review suggest that evidence-based psychotherapies may influence some aspects of neurocognitive functioning in mood disorders. This continues to be an ongoing area of importance and warrants further research.

Virtual reality in one form or another has been around for over 50 years, most notably in entertainment and business environments. Technology-focused teachers have been leading the way with attempts at utilising and integrating virtual reality into K-12 and Higher Education. However, as quickly as technology changes so does the enthusiasm for the use in educational contexts. Much of this is due to the high-level cost (time and money) with no evidence-based educational return. In 2020 the global pandemic forced the education sector to innovate to provide authentic learning environments for students. The time is right for virtual reality to take centre stage. Over 171 million people worldwide currently use virtual reality, and the market in education is expected to grow by 42% over the next five years. This paper focuses on a range of virtual reality literature encompassing work across the spectrum of software and hardware, identifying where more educational implementation and research needs to be done and providing a perspective on future possibilities focusing on current affordances.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder that is characterized by restriction of energy intake leading to significantly low body weight, an intense fear of gaining weight or persistent behavior that interferes with weight gain, and disturbance in the way one’s body weight or shape is experienced. Because many patients with AN attempt to conceal their efforts to lose weight and minimize their symptoms, obtaining information from a caregiver is an important part of the assessment. A medical history and physical examination must be completed to assess medical stability, including review of vital signs, electrocardiogram, and laboratory studies. Medically unstable patients require a medical admission for refeeding and stabilization, including monitoring for refeeding syndrome. Pharmacotherapy should not be used as the primary treatment for patients with AN. The most evidence-based psychotherapy approach for children and adolescents is family-based treatment (Maudsley family therapy).

Virtual Reality is one of the most promising tools in the development of new methods for neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation. Neuropsychological assessment is typically carried out by administering paper-and-pencil tests to patients. However, these tests have some limitations, due to the fact that they are not effectively able to evaluate the subject's performance of daily activities. To cope with this void, neuropsychologists base their evaluation on their clinical experience, often successfully. Nevertheless, this is not an evidence-based practice, thus it is not considered optimal from a medical decision-making perspective. More recently, however, the increasing accessibility of advanced technology such as virtual reality has opened new possibilities for neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation. Starting with this frame, the chapter explores the changes that have occurred over time in the neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation up to the most recent VR-based tools. In particular, we will present a VR-based PC tool for the assessment of executive functions, and a VR-based mobile tool for the assessment and rehabilitation of unilateral spatial neglect. In accordance with the literature, we show the potential for virtual reality, highlighting the advantages, limitations, and the possible future challenges.

The aim of this study is to investigate the importance of acquiring basic and advanced laparoscopic skills using a virtual reality low cost simulator in laparoscopic surgery. The authors have considered six basic and five advanced skills. The training exercises are related to the acquisition of tasks which allow students to reach basic gestures competences. In the second phase the students will perform complex drills to acquire a correct gesture. The authors have developed a standardized, graduated and evidence-based training course. A software able to handle the training task has been created through a virtual interface based on the concept “student - exercise – evaluation”. The results are expected because data analysis will be possible only after a period of simulator testing on different samples of students. Referring to the experience reported by other authors, they expect significant results in terms of: reduction of learning time, better dexterity, ability to recognize and correct procedural errors, positive economic impact in term of better patients outcome, analyzed by codified clinical indicators.
