This special issue of the JIS (SBC Journal on 3D Interactive Systems) is in the second year acknowledging the best papers of the Symposium on Virtual and Augmented Reality. In the SVR 2011 several interesting research projects in the field of Virtual and Augmented Reality appeared and among the best papers this issue presents two selected papers for the readers of JIS. The SVR is the most important event on Virtual and Augmented Reality in Brazil, which is being conducted by academic professionals’ members of the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC) that is supporting the conference for many years. The two papers in this issue were selected among the best papers presented at the SVR 2011. Although the technical implementation of the papers is different each other, they try to solve problems of communication and location. It is possible to note that the virtual and augmented reality is really changing our life style, and these papers show important ideas that can be directly applied by people around the world. The paper “xGroupware: Supporting Collaborative Cross-Reality Environments using Multiagents System” authored by Katia Vega, Débora Cardador, Hugo Fuks and Carlos Lucena, presents very modern proposals of meetings, combining the virtual and real in a way that users can really take advantage of the resources available to improve their communication. It is also important to say that the clever idea to use multi agents in the system as an autonomous way to perceive and interact with the situations of the meetings is amazing. Finally the integration of wearable computing devices in the system makes it very interesting and probably reflects meetings of the future. The second paper “A Case Study of Augmented Reality for Mobile Platforms” authored by Gabriela Tinti Vasselai, Dalton Solano dos Reis and Paulo Cesar Rodacki Gomes presents how the mobile devices can contribute to help our localization with the resources of augmented reality. The paper shows that the resources available in the mobile devices can be used to augmented reality purposes although some improvements in the mobile platforms must be done. We would like to thank all the reviewers of the process, the editors and staff that supported us with the submission system, and of course the authors that had to extend and adapt their papers in order to have some new content that makes this special issue an important reference point for virtual and augmented reality research.

We look at some of the ways in which feminist theorists and researchers apply new insights to established topics in psychology, as they explore the landscape of the unknown and unspoken in the lives of girls and women. The articles in this special issue present research and reflections by a group of feminist scholars, some of us from the editorial board of the Psychology of Women Quarterly and others from the larger academic community. Each contributor, selecting from a personal interest or expertise, reconceptualizes a topical area of psychology with the intent of reframing our understanding of its meaning, its impact on women's functioning, and/or its application to feminist research and theory. To provide a background, we review a sample of contributions of feminist thought to the contemporary revolution in science. We then ask the question: In what ways have feminist perspectives and scholarship transformed psychology in the particular areas addressed by these authors?

Latest advances in crowd simulation models that attempt to make agents with more realistic human-like behaviors explore heterogeneity of agent behaviors in order to achieve increased overall simulation realism. In general, human behavioral and psychological studies are used as base of knowledge and researchers try to simulate observed human behavior patterns within virtual agents. In this direction, this paper implements an emotion contagion model, within crowd simulation scenarios, in order to create realistic perception of agent behaviors on crowds.

This special edition of Information Technology in Construction is focuses on new realities in construction. The editors have curated a series of papers intended to provoke speculation on the potential future of construction in the 21st Century and beyond. This edition grew from ConVR 2018: Evolving Construction, a conference held in Auckland, New Zealand. Where researchers reported on ideas, innovations and applications for virtual and augmented reality for construction. Authors of excellent papers were invited to extend their submission for publication in this special edition. Thus, this issue presents a glimpse into the state of research focused on construction and specifically the topic of ‘virtual and augmented reality’ in its broadest sense. The Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector is age-old, comprises a variety of stakeholders and professions and is worth trillions of dollars globally. It is also a fiercely complex and risky business, which is highly regulated, because of this, change and innovation can occur slowly. However, we are now in the 21st century, a century that has come to be defined by fast changing technology. What are the implications for the AEC industry?

The special issue of the JIS (SBC Journal on 3D Inter- active Systems) acknowledging the best papers of the XII Symposium on Virtual and Augmented Reality (SVR 2010) was an important opportunity to present excellent papers in the Virtual and Augmented Reality field. The SVR is for more than 12 years the most important event on Virtual and Augmented Reality in Brazil, which is being conduct by academic professionals members of the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC) that is supporting the conference for so many years. Since this is the first special issue of JIS, we had selected papers to be included in the journal that fits the expectations of the readers. These papers were selected among the 10 best papers presented at the SVR 2010, and they come from different sub-areas of the Virtual and Augmented Reality. The development introduced in the papers present important new proposals and algorithms that might be used by several readers of the journal. The paper Exploring the Design of Transitional Hybrid User Interfaces authored by Daniela Trevisan, Felipe Carvalho, Alberto Raposo, Carla Freitas and Luciana Nedel, is about a discussion on how hybrid user interfaces should be managed in order to improve the feeling of immersion of the user in a virtual reality system. The second paper Expression Cloning Based on Anthropo- metric Proportions and Deformations by Motion of Spherical Influence Zones authored by Roberto C. Vieira, Creto Augusto Vidal, and Joaquim B. Cavalcante-Neto presented methods of mapping human facial expressions to virtual characters. This works was based on anthropometric proportions and geometric manipulations by moving influence zones of model with similar characteristics. The third paper Extending Brazilian DTV Middleware to Incorporate 3D Technologies authored by Daniel F. L. Souza, Liliane S. Machado, Tatiana A. Tavares explains how properly support for 3D content can be integrated on the new Brazilian Digital Television. The paper presents strategies and examples to prove their proposal. We would like to thank all the authors of this process that had to extend and adapted their papers as requested by both the submission and the reviewing process.
