Through the lens of the Community Service Organization (CSO), this article explores the emergence of Los Angeles ethno-racial communities' political activism and what enabled their success in a difficult Cold War climate. The CSO's creation in 1947, when it became the first enduring civil rights organization for the largest urban Mexican-origin population in the United States, is striking since historical narratives generally assume the Cold War crushed meaningful civil rights change. The CSO complicates this declensionist narrative. Its success stemmed in part from its reliance upon interracial networks that sustained it in its early years. The CSO reveals links between different racial and ethnic communities, in three different eras—the World War II, Cold War, and civil rights eras—that made the emergence and persistence of such activism possible.

A pilot study of changes in need deprivation following the introduction of a Management by Objectives program is reported. Changes in deprivation were measured by the Porter-Lawler Needs Questionnaire distributed to 44 subjects in a community service organization. Findings indicate significant decreases in deprivation for 4 of 5 need levels: social, self-esteem, autonomy and self-actualization following the introduction of the program.

The children in Wijaya Kusuma District had potentials in Art but they had not fully realized and developed because of the middle to lower economic and social situation. Those children also had a great desire to learn, but no one facilitated. On the other hand, their parents could not see the art potentials in children yet, so they did not encourage and appreciate children's talents in art. The purpose of this community service was to provide the arts workshop based on their respective talents and interests. The method applied was grouping the children according to their interests and talents, namely singing, drawing or crafting, and dancing. The workshop was given for two months or eight meetings. The exhibition and children's art performances were attended by parents and the surrounding community at the last meeting. The results of the activity showed the participation of children in singing, drawing or crafting activities, and dancing. The Art exhibitions presented the paintings from used paper, pencil cases from paper pulp, and dolls from eggs. The Art performances were in the form of dances and songs. The enthusiasm of parents and the community was also seen by their visits to the exhibitions and art performances.

Abstract   Background  This Community Service-Learning Project (CSLP) at the University of Saskatchewan is designed to help students develop patient-centred care practices in urban underserved settings.  First-year medical and pharmacy students partner interprofessionally to both learn and serve, working with community-based organizations (CBOs) that primarily serve either low-income or newcomer residents of Saskatoon. Since the CSLP’s pilot year in 2005-2006, 98 first-year medical and pharmacy students have participated in the CSLP.       Methods and Findings  We evaluated the outcomes and processes of the CSLP since the 2006-2007 year, using mixed methods: end-of-project questionnaires; document analysis looking for key and recurrent themes; end-of-project semi-structured interviews with CBO coordinators and clients. We examined students’ experiences, including satisfaction, achievement of learning objectives, learning processes, and perceived outcomes. Students’ main learning outcomes related to client-centered approach, interprofessional attitudes and skills, and personal development. Various learnings related to program processes are reported.   Conclusions  Our evaluation reinforced findings from the literature on both interprofessional education and community service-learning, as well uncovering some new findings.   Students described a transformative learning experience that helped them begin to develop understanding and skills to work more effectively with clients in urban underserved settings.
