<i>Nowakowskiella keratinophila</i> sp. nov. isolatod from ihe brackish water of the bay Zalew Wiślany in Poland on snake skin bail is described. The new species is related to <i>Nawakawskiella elegans</i> Nowakowski but differs in the type of operculation of sporangia and the affinity to keratinized substrata.

During 1996–1997 a systematic sampling programme was carried out in brackish coastal lakes and lagoons and in the delta of the River Po. In six of the nine collecting locations, 12 species of Gastrotricha were identified. One species, Chaetonotus ichthydioides, is new to science; another three species, the chaetonotidans Heterolepidoderma foliatum and the macrodasyidans Dendrodasys ponticus and Turbanella cf. pontica, and one macrodasyidan genus, Paradasys (P. subterraneus), were found in Italy for the first time. The unusual morphology of some of the species identified shows that Gastrotricha colonized brackish waters from both marine and freshwater habitats.

A new species of <i>Mitochytridium</i> Dangeard — <i>M. regale</i> sp. nov. is described. The fungus has been obtained by baiting with snake skin a sample of the pond water collected from Łazienki Royal Garden in Warsaw, Poland. This new species differs from the type species of the genus (<i>M. ramosum</i> Dangeard) by the saprophytic behaviour, persistent zoospore case in the sporangial wall and some other minor differences.

Currently, the Onisicdea (terrestrial isopods) is a massive Crustacea suborder of more than 3 700 species, but our knowledge of their paleodiversity is poor. In this paper, we present ten fossils of Crinocheta, the largest clade within the Onisicdea, discovered in Early Miocene (23 Ma) amber of Chiapas. We described three new genera and six new species including Palaeolibrinus spinicornis gen. nov. sp. nov., Armadilloniscus miocaenicus sp. nov., Archeostenoniscus robustus gen. nov. sp. nov., Archeostenoniscus mexicanus sp. nov., Palaeospherarmadillo mazanticus gen. nov. sp. nov., and Palaeospherarmadillo rotundus sp. nov. This study represents the first fossil record of the family Detonidae, Olibrinidae, and “Stenoniscidae”. From a paleoenvironmental reconstruction perspective, the oniscidean fauna presented here supports a particularly wet paleoenvironment, under brackish water influence, similar to an estuary.

Abstract A new species of the thermosbaenacean genus Tethysbaena Wagner,1994 is described as T. ledoyeri n. sp. Together with an as yet undescribed amphipod (Niphargus sp.) it is an inhabitant of the brackish water of an aquifer that flows through the Basse-Provence Urgonian karstic system and reaches the Mediterranean Sea, 15 km east of Marseille, in the “Calanques” coast. The new taxon, being part of the T. argentarii-group, is compared with its closest allies in this group. Preliminary DNA data obtained from two specimens of the new species provide confirmation of its close ties to T. argentarii but also to T. scabra, the two geographically closest described species.

Seven species of the family Candonidae Kaufmann, 1900 are reported from South Korea. Five species are described as new, all belonging to the subfamily Candoninae Kaufmann, 1900 and the tribe Candonini Kaufmann, 1900: Candona quasiakaina sp. nov., C. sillae sp. nov., Fabaeformiscandona koreana sp. nov., Typhlocypris choi sp. nov., and Schellencandona tea sp. nov. A very close resemblance between Candona sillae and the European C. improvisa Ostermeyer, 1937 prompted a redescription of the latter species based on the type material, and designation of the lectotype. One species of the tribe Candonopsini, Candonopsis transgrediens Brehm, 1923, previously known only from China, is reported from Korean freshwater habitats, and its first redescription is provided, along with a key to the world representatives of the genus Candonopsis Vávra, 1820. One species of the subfamily Paracypridinae, Dolerocypria mukaishimensis Okubo, 1980, previously known only from Japan, is redescribed from Korean brackish water habitats, and some notes on its variability are provided. A checklist of the Candonidae ostracods from East Asia is also provided, but only for those species that have been well-documented and taxonomically described.

A new species of rajin skate, Zearaja maugeana sp. nov., is described on the basis of specimens from two estuaries in remote southwestern Tasmania. The species, known locally as the Maugean Skate, has been assessed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals based on its rarity and very narrow geographic range. It is also one of the few skates worldwide to occur mainly in brackish water. The Maugean Skate belongs to a group of anatomically conservative, Dipturus-like skates conforming to the currently unrecognized genus Zearaja Whitley. This ancient group, with a Gondwanan lineage possibly dating back to the Cretaceous, contains at least two other species: Z. nasuta from New Zealand and Z. chilensis from South America. The skeletal morphologies of the Zearaja species are compared with typical Dipturus skates and their phylogenetic position discussed.

Minute caenogastropod brackish-water gastropods, formerly classified as Hydrobia, are important elements of the brackish-water fauna and were objects of intensive study for many years. Until now, five genera have been distinguished, most of them represented by a number of species, but rather indistinguishable without molecular data (cytochrome oxidase subunit I – COI). In the eastern Mediterranean region, they are still poorly studied. In this paper, we present a new species of “Hydrobia” from the brackish Moustos spring, Arkadia, eastern Peloponnese, Greece. The shell, protoconch, radula, female reproductive organs, and penis are described and illustrated, together with the molecular (COI) relationships with other hydrobiids. All data confirm that these snails represent a distinct taxon, which must be classified as a new species belonging to a new genus. The formal descriptions are given. The closest, sister taxon is Salenthydrobia Wilke, 2003. The molecularly estimated time of divergence, 5.75 ± 0.49 Mya, coincides with 5.33 Mya, which is the time of the Oligocene flooding that terminated the Messinian salinity crisis. During the latter period, brackish “Lago-Mare” habitats were most probably suitable for the last common ancestor of Salenthydrobia and the newly described genus. Later, the Pliocene flooding isolated the Apennine and Peloponnese populations, promoting speciation.
