The aim of this research was to test if mean germination time (MGT) can predict seed vigor in 10 seed lots of canola. There was a significant difference between the final germination percentages of the 10 seed lots tested (‘Hyola 330’, ‘Hyola 401’, ‘Okapi’, ‘Elite’, ‘SLMO 46’, ‘Zarfam’, ‘RGS 003’, ‘Option 500’, ‘Echo’, ‘Rainbow’) and a highly significant correlation between MGT and this value. Of the 10 seed lots, ‘Hyola 330’ had the lowest final percentage germination (62%) and the highest MGT, 3.64 days. The correlation between MGT and the proportion of “normal” seedlings was also significant. ‘Hyola 330’ had the lowest percentage of normal seedlings (60%). A tetrazolium test showed that this lot had some dead seeds that could not germinate; some seeds were viable, but they would produce abnormal seedlings. One of the main reasons of low final germination percentage and high MGT in ‘Hyola 330’ was low viability of this seed lot. Mean germination time is suggested as a good indicator of seed vigor in canola.

The research work was carried out at the Seed Laboratory of Agronomy Department of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from February to April in 2008 to find out the effect of hydropriming methods on maize seedling emergence. The hydropriming methods were- T1 (Non-priming), T2 (14 hours soaking + drying + storing), T3 (18 hours soaking + drying + storing), T4 (22 hours soaking + drying + storing), T5 (14 hours soaking + surface drying), T6 (18 hours soaking + surface drying), and T7 (22 hours soaking + surface drying). Effect of different hydropriming methods on seedling emergence performance of maize was evaluated at two moisture levels viz., 30% and 60% moisture of saturated sand in the experiment. Germination percentage, germination index and mean germination time were influenced significantly by hydropriming methods. The highest germination percentage, germination index, and lowest mean germination time were recorded with T6 (18 hours soaking + surface drying). ABSTRACT: The goal of this work was to characterize morphometrically diaspores from three species of mistletoes (Passovia pyrifolia, Struthanthus marginatus e Phoradendron mucronatum), as well as to study its germination behavior according to temperature and luminosity. In germination tests, the completely randomized design was used, in factor scheme 4 x 2, with 4 replications of 15 diaspores. The factors for the first test were different temperatures and two diaspore conditions (intact and without epicarp). In the second test, factors were different light qualities and two diaspore conditions. The analyzed variables were: germination percentage, germination rate index (GRI) and mean germination time (MGT). Mistletoe’s diaspores present an elliptic shape with viscin layer, an essential characteristic for the dispersion of the species. In addition to this, they present a distinction as for the moisture content when compared to the Loranthaceae and Viscaceae, where the latter presents the highest content. Germination is greater at the alternated temperature of 20-30 oC for P. pyrifolia and P. mucronatum diaspores and 20 oC for S. marginatus. Luminosity interfered in the germination of P. mucronatum and S. marginatus but did not influence P. pyrifolia. The diaspore condition influenced the germination of the three studied species, observing a significant increase in their germination when the epicarp was removed. Temperature and luminosity interfere directly in the GRI and MGT of the three mistletoes species.

Seventeen osmopriming techniques viz., T1 = 1% Na2SO4, T2 = 3% Na2SO4, T3 = 5% Na2SO4, T4 = 1% K2HPO4, T5 = 3% K2HPO4, T6 = 5% K2HPO4, T7 = 1% ZnSO4, T8 = 3% ZnSO4, T9 = 5% ZnSO4, T10 = 1% Ca(H2PO4)2, T11 = 3% Ca(H2PO4)2, T12 = 5% Ca(H2PO4)2, T13 = 1% H2O2, T14 = 3% H2O2, T15 = 5% H2O2, T16 = Hydropriming, T17 = Non-priming (control) were used as experimental variables. Different osmopriming methods on seedling emergence performance of maize was evaluated at two moisture levels viz., 30 and 60% moisture of saturated sand in the experiment. Germination percentage, germination index and mean germination time were influenced significantly by osmopriming methods. The experiment was carried out at the research field of Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jessore during 2009-10 and 2010-2011 to find out the effect of priming and ambient temperatures due to different sowing dates on emergence of maize seedlings. The experiment consisted of two priming methods viz., i) Priming, ii) Non-priming, and ten sowing dates viz., i) 15 November, ii) 30 November, iii) 15 December iv) 30 December v) 14 January vi) 29 January vii) 13 February viii) 28 February, ix) 15 March, and x) 30 March. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Results showed that germination percentage, germination index, mean germination time and dry matter/plant were influenced significantly by priming. The highest germination percentage, germination index, dry matter/plant and lowest mean germination time were recorded from primed seed sown in March followed by February and November sowings but those were very poor in December and January sowings. AbstractThe germination of seed batches of two rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) hybrids (‘Hybrirock’ and ‘Factor’) were investigated in response to priming in aqueous solutions of ascorbic acid (10 mM), L-cysteine (10 mM) and triacontanol (1 μM), respectively tap water (as control treatment). Investigations were focused on seed quality parameters, such as germination percentage, mean germination time, germination index, uniformity of germination, and seedling shoot and root growth. Germinated seeds were counted every 24 hours for a period of seven days, recording the final germination percentage (FGP), mean germination time (MGT), the coefficient of velocity of germination (CVG), germination rate index (GRI), germination index (GI), uncertanty (U), and synchrony (Z). In a separate trial fresh shoot- and root length, respectively the dry weight of the shoots and roots were also determined after a 14 day period. Germination tests were performed to examine the quality of seeds in response to different priming treatments. The results demonstrated that priming improved the germination parameters of seeds of both hybrids. Furthermore, the use of ascorbic acid, L-cysteine and triacontanol also enhanced seedling growth. The results may be used to rank seed lots by vigor, and decisions can be made regarding planting potential of each seed lot.

Infection of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) spikes by Pyrenophora tritici-repentis (Died.) Drechs. (Ptr) causes kernel discolouration, reducing the commercial value of the grain. Preharvest sprouting in wheat causes loss of grain yield, grain functionality and value as seed. The objective of this research was to determine the effects of Ptr infection on the expression of preharvest sprouting response. Four genotypes representing a range of preharvest sprouting response were studied: RL4137 has very good sprouting resistance; SC8021V2, good; AC Karma, fair; and Genesis, poor. These genotypes were grown in a growth cabinet and their spikes were artificially inoculated with a conidial suspension of Ptr or water. Spikes were collected at physiologic maturity, threshed by hand and germinated on wetted filter paper at 10 or 20°C to obtain a percentage germination and a mean germination time. Healthy seeds were also germinated in a solution containing a crude extract of the fungus. At 20°C, sprouting-resistant genotypes showed a significant delay in germination compared to susceptible genotypes; however, differences were not significant at the lower temperature. Genesis germinated quickly at both temperatures. All genotypes except Genesis had reductions in sprouting resistance when infected by Ptr, but these effects were significant only at 20°C. When inoculated with Ptr and germinated at 20°C, AC Karma germinated as quickly as the water controls and gave a preharvest sprouting response similar to Genesis. However, SC8021V2 and RL4137 inoculated with Ptr retained 40 and 78%, respectively, of their mean germination time compared to the water controls. Germination of healthy seeds in a solution containing a crude extract of Ptr increased the percentage germination and shortened the mean germination time of all genotypes, but did not result in significant changes for any individual line. The goal of this study was to evaluate concentrations of nanosized TiO2 at 0, 5, 20, 40, 60 and 80 mg L-1 with bulk TiO2 for possible stimulatory effects on wheatgrass seed germination and early growth stage. After 14 days of seed incubation, germination percentage improved by 9% following exposure to 5 ppm nanosized TiO2 treatment comparing to control. Similar positive effects occurred in terms of germination value and mean daily germination. Application of bulk TiO2 particles in 80 ppm concentration greatly decreased the majority of studied traits. Therefore phytotoxicity effect observed on wheatgrass seedling by application of bulk TiO2 particles in 80 ppm concentration. Exposure of wheatgrass seeds to 5 ppm nanosized TiO2 and bulk and nanosized TiO2 at 60 ppm obtained the lowest mean germination time but higher concentrations did not improve mean germination time. In general, there was a positive response by wheatgrass seed to some concentrations of nanosized TiO2. Usage of nanoparicles in order to improve germination and establishment of range plant in adverse environments similar to rangeland could be possible.

Este trabalho objetivou avaliar a germinação e vigor de sementes de Plathymenia reticulata Benth. submetidas a diferentes tratamentos para superação de dormência. Os tratamentos testados foram: controle - sementes intactas (T0), escarificação mecânica com lixa d’água nº 60 (T1), desponte na região lateral do tegumento (T2), imersão em água fervente por 10 min (T3), em hipoclorito de sódio por 15 min (T4) e em solução com detergente por 15 min (T5). Foram determinados: peso de mil sementes, grau de umidade, porcentagem de germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação (IVG), tempo médio de germinação (TMG), curva de embebição, teste da condutividade elétrica e comprimento da radícula. A porcentagem de germinação das sementes submetidas ao T1 e T2 foi estatisticamente igual (respectivamente, 90 e 88%) e superiores aos outros tratamentos testados (12%). As sementes expostas aos T1 e T2 apesentaram porcentagem de absorção de água superiores e em menor tempo, assim como maiores IVG e menores TMG, comparadas aos demais tratamentos. O comprimento das radículas não variou entre os tratamentos testados. A condutividade elétrica da solução com as sementes do T0 foi superior aos outros tratamentos testados. Sementes de P. reticulata expostas ao T1 e T2 apresentam maior germinação e vigor.Palavras-chave: germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação, teste de condutividade elétrica, vigor, vinhático. DORMANCY BREAKING OF Plathymenia reticulata Benth. SEEDS ABSTRACT:This study aimed to evaluate the germination and vigor of Plathymenia reticulata Benth. seeds submitted to different dormancy breaking treatments. Testing treatments were: control - intact seeds (T0); mechanical scarification with sandpaper n. 60 (T1), coating cutting in the lateral side of tegument (T2), immersion in boiling water during 10 min (T3), in sodium hypochlorite solution during 15 min (T4), and in detergent solution during 15 min (T5). Moisture content, 1000-seed weight, germination percentage, germination speed index (GSI), mean germination time (MGT), imbibition curve, electrical conductivity test, and radicle length were determined. Germination percentage to T1 and T2 were statistically equal (90 and 88 %, respectively) and higher than others treatments tested (12%). Seeds exposed to T1 and T2 also presented higher and faster water absorption percentage, when compared to the others treatments, as well as higher GSI, and lower MGT. The rootlets length did not vary among treatments tested. Electrical conductivity of intact seeds was higher than others treatments. Erythroxylum pauferrense is an endemic understory plant species of the Northeast Region of Brazil. The species is of great importance to the region and so ecophysiological studies are needed for its preservation. The objective of the present study was to determine the best substrates and temperatures for testing germination and seed vigor of E. pauferrense. An experiment was performed comprising a completely randomized design in a 5 x 4 factorial scheme, with five temperature regimes (20, 25, 30, 35°C constant and 20-30°C alternating) and four types of substrates (paper, vermiculite, sand and commercial substrate). The following characteristics were evaluated: germination percentage, first germination count, germination speed index, mean germination time, seedling length and dry mass (root and shoot). Paper and vermiculite substrates combined with constant temperatures of 20, 25, 30 and alternated between 20-30°C, provide greater seed germination and vigor while 35°C reduces seed physiological quality.

Teff is an annual grass originated in Ethiopia, grown for both human food and animal feed. Salinity and moisture stress are the main limiting factors of agricultural development on arid and semi-arid regions. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of salinity due to NaCl on germination of teff. A set of experiments was conducted under a completely randomized design with four replications of 200 seeds at two different suboptimal germination temperatures (15 and 25 °C) in the dark for 10 days. In order to create salt stress conditions during the germination process, seven solutions were used (0 as control, 80, 160, 240 and 320, 400 and 480 mM NaCl). The germination performance was evaluated by final germination percentage and mean germination time. The presence of NaCl reduced germination, especially above 240 mM for 15 °C and 400 mM for 25 °C. The mean germination time increased with higher NaCl levels.
