The increase of gibberellin content and decrease of amount of inhibitors in light irradiated pine seedlings were found. It was also stated that stimulating effect of light on pine seeds germination is correlated with the increase of gibberellin and simultaneous decrease of the inhibitor content. The inhibitor isolated from pine seeds proved to be a compound similar in some properties to abscisic acid.

The amount of waste produced by people increases with the increasing population in the world. Especially non-recyclable wastes have become a major environmental problem. Waste tires that emerge as car demands of people increase are one of the non-recyclable wastes. In this study, the usage possibilities of powder rubbers obtained from waste car tires were examined in the production of laminated veneer lumber (LVL) boards, which are preferred as furniture and decoration material in the forest products industry. For this, three different tree species (Scotch Pine— Pinus silvestris L., Oriental Beech— Fagus orientalis L., Stinking Juniper— Juniperus foetidissima Wild.) and two different types of glue (UF and PVAc glues) were used. Waste tire rubbers (WTR) were mixed into the glue in different proportions (0%, 10%, 20%, 30%). Physical (full dry and equilibrium moisture density, contraction in the transversal and longitudinal direction) and mechanical tests (MoR, MoE, bonding resistance) were performed on the LVL samples prepared. According to the results obtained, it has been seen that the mixtures of 10% and 20% WTR increase the LVL resistance. An eco-friendly building material has been obtained by using WTR produced from waste car tires in production of LVL.

Growth response of Pinus silvestris hypocotyl sections to some synthetic growth regulators and related substances was studied. Elongation of hypocotyl sections was stimulated by naphtaleneacetic acid, indole-3-acetic acid, in-dole-3-propionic acid, indole-3-butyric acid, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, indoleaoetic amide, indoleacetic nitrile and coumarin. Indole-3-acetic acid and naphtaleneacetic acid extended period of growth up to 16 and 24 hours, respectively. Growth was inhibited by kinetin, trans-cinnamic acid and 2,3,5-tri-iodobenzoic acid. No effect of gibberellic acid, tryptophan and biotin was observed.

Water culture and sand culture seedlings of Scots pine were investigated in respect to their reaction to ammonium or nitrate source of nitrogen nutrition. Photosynthesis, respiration, and dry matter production were studied in three and four months old plants. The results are preliminary but they have indicated that the effect of various form of nitrogen nutrition on gas exchange and growth rates could change during the growing season.

In embryos and cotyledons of seeds of the radish cv. `Tetra Iłówiecka' (which needs 20 days of vernalization) and cv. 'Saxa' (which flowers without vernalization) germinating at a vernalizing temperature of 5°C, the levels of auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins and the aibscisic acid-like inhibitor were determined, The analyses were performed after 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 days of chilling. The levels of growth regulators were also determined in embryos and cotyledons of seeds germinated at 260C when in the same growth stage as the material taken from chilled seeds. Cold treatment significantly affected the level of all endogenous growth regulators in embryos and cotyledons of both varieties. However, changes in the levels of these substances were not directly connected with the vernalization process. It was found that the vernalization of seeds of 'the radish cv. `Tetra Iłówiecka' increased the level of GAs in leaves, this did not, however, coincide with flower initiation. It is concluded that the role of GAs in flowering of the studied plants is connected rather with photoinduction than with vernalization.
