The synthesis and the characterization of the complex salt [Au(tBu2PH)2][HCl2] (2) resulting from the reaction of hydrogen tetrachloridoaurate(III) hydrate with tBu2PH in dichloromethane at room temperature is reported. Single crystals of 2 have been analyzed by X-ray crystallography: monoclinic, P21=c, Z = 12, a = 12:0805(3), b = 12:3729(4), c = 46:7506(13) Å ; ß = 90:948(2)°; V = 6986:9(3) Å3; T = 173(2) K. The hydrogen bihalide anions [HCl2]- fill the interstices between the large complex cations [Au(tBu2PH)2]+ in the crystal.

The cubic iron hydroxy boracite Fe3B7O13OH・1.5H2O was synthesized from Fe2O3 and B2O3 under high-pressure/high-temperature conditions of 3 GPa and 960 °C in a modified Walker-type multianvil apparatus. The crystal structure was determined at room temperature by X-ray diffraction on single crystals. It crystallizes in the cubic space group F4̄3c (Z = 8) with the parameters a = 1222.4(2) pm, V = 1.826(4) nm3, R1 = 0.0362, and wR2 = 0.0726 (all data). The B-O network is similar to that of other cubic boracites.

1,1,1,3,3,3-Hexaamino-1λ5,3λ5-diphosphazenium bromide [(NH2)3PNP(NH2)3]Br, nitrate [(NH2)3PNP(NH2)3][NO3], and toluene-4-sulfonate [(NH2)3PNP(NH2)3][CH3C6H4SO3] have been prepared by anion exchange in aqueous solution. Single crystals were obtained from acetonitrile solutions in a temperature gradient between 60 °C and room temperature. The crystal structures were determined by single crystal X-ray methods at room temperature. ([(NH2)3PNP(NH2)3]Br: P1̄̄ , Z = 2, a = 596.2( 1 ),b = 744.5( 1), c = 1114.4( 1) pm, α = 108.78( 1), β = 104.18(1), γ = 90.64(1)°, R 1 = 0.048, wR2 = 0.104; [(NH2)3PNP(NH2)3][NO3]: P1̄̄, Z = 2, a = 550.9( 1), b = 796.3( 1), c = 1115.7( 1) pm, α = 94.45( 1), β= 99.55( 1), γ = 101,53( 1)°, R1 = 0.033, wR2 = 0.095; [(NH2)3PNP(NH2)3][CH3C6H4SO3]: P21/c, Z = 4, a = 804.1(1), b = 596.1(1), c = 3218.7(3) pm, β = 94.59(1)°, R1 = 0.052, wR2 = 0.136). In the solid the three salts consist of discrete [(NH2)3PNP(NH2)3]+ cations and their corresponding anions. The PN4 tetrahedra in [(NH2)3PNP(NH2)3]Br are staggered, while in [(NH2)3PNP(NH2)3][NO3] the eclipsed conformation is preferred. The PN4 tetrahedra of [(NH2)3PNP(NH2)3][CH3C6H4SO3] show gauche conformation.

The room-temperature single-crystal X-ray structural characterization of the title compound (tpyH2)2[Tb(OH2)8]Cl7.~2⅓H2O is recorded. Crystals are triclinic, Pī , a 17.063(5), b 16.243(3), c 7.878(3) Ǻ, α 84.78(2), β 84.39(3), γ 87.81(2)°, Z = 2 formula units; 3167 'observed' diffractometer reflections were refined by full-matrix least-squares procedures to a residual of 0.057. Notable features of interest of the compound are the 'chelation' of chloride ions by the terpyridinium cations , and the existence of a free [Tb(OH2)8]2+ cation in the presence of an abundance of chloride ions.

The triply bonded octahalogenodiosmate(III) anions [Os2X8]2-, previously known with X = Cl, Br, have now been extended to include the iodide with two staggered OsI4 units. This compound was prepared by treating [Os2Cl8]2- with Nal at room temperature in acetone solution. The structure determination by X-ray diffractometry on single crystals of (PPN)2[Os2I8] · 2 CH2Cl2, reveals crystallization in the monoclinic system, space group P21/c with Z = 4. The Os-Os triple bond is with 2.212(1) Å the longest within the three octahalogenodiosmates(III). The Raman spectra show ν(OsOs) at 285, [Os2Cl8]2-; at 287, [Os2Br8]2- and for the iodo compound at 270.1 cm-1 with up to three overtones. The spectroscopic constants are calculated to be ω1 = 270.9 cm-1; X11 = -0.50 cm-1. The 10 Κ UV-VIS spectra of solid [(n-C4H9)4N]2[Os2X8] exhibit δ-π* transitions with maxima at 723, 690 and 643 nm, superimposed by vibrational fine structures with long progressions of 195, 211 and 183 cm-1 for X = Cl, Br, I, respectively. Oxidation of [Os2X8]2-, X = Cl, Br with the corresponding halogen leads to the cleavage of the Os-Os bond, and the dekahalogenodiosmates(IV), [Os2X10]2-, are formed

[VCl2(15-crown-5)]+[VOCl4]- has been prepared by the reaction of VCl4 with 15-crown-5 in acetonitrile solution in the presence of water, forming black-brown single crystals. They were characterized by IR spectroscopy as well as by an X-ray structure determination. Space group Pnma, Z = 4, 1530 observed unique reflexions, R = 0.052. Lattice dimensions at -120°C: a = 1128.5(4), b = 1063.3(3), c = 1680(1) pm. The compound forms ions, in which the cation contains vanadium(+III), which is seven coordinate by the five oxygen atoms of the crown ether molecule and by two chlorine atoms in axial positions of a pentagonal bipyramide. The [VOCl4]- anion contains vanadium (+V) with approximately tetragonal symmetry

A study of the polarized infrared and Raman spectra of acenaphthylene single crystals has been made. These results, together with Gordon and Yang's preliminary X-ray work, suggest that the molecules pack in some disordered arrangement in the solid at room temperature. Most of the A1 fundamentals were identified in the Raman solution spectrum from their low depolarization ratio, and a few tentative assignments of nontotally symmetric fundamentals were made.

The reaction of (–)-β-pinene with KCN under a mild bridged Ritter reaction gave (1S,5R,6S)-2,2,6-trimethyl-3-aza-bicyclo[3.3.1]non-3-en-6-yl acetate that subsequently reacted to provide an unexpected (1S,4R,5R,6S)-4-cyano-2,2,6-trimethyl-3-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-6-yl acetate. The structure of the compound was determined by high-resolution mass spectrometry, and IR and NMR spectroscopy and confirmed by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The compound crystallises in the monoclinic P21 space group, with unit cell parameters a 8.6120 (17), b 7.4570 (15), c 11.189 (2) Å, and β 110.16 (3)°.

The synthesis and structural characterization of the complex [Ru2(μ-Cl)(μ-PtBu2)(μ-dppa)(CO)4] (4, dppa = Ph2PN(H)PPh2) are reported. The title compound and two other related complexes were obtained in high yields by the reaction of the coordinatively unsaturated species [Ru2(μ-H)(μ-PtBu2)(μ-PˆP)(CO)4] (PˆP = dppa, 3; PˆP =Ph2PN(Ph)PPh2, 5; PˆP =Ph2PN(CH2Ph)PPh2, 6) with carbon tetrachloride. Single crystals of 4 grown from dichloromethane-acetone have been analyzed by X-ray crystallography

LiNbO3 single crystals were implanted at room temperature with Eu+ ions at 70 keV with fluence ranging from 0.5 to 5 × 1016 ions · cm−2. The damage in the implanted layer has been investigated by Channeling Rutherford Backscattering (RBS-C), and the oxidation states of the cations have been determined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Following implantation, a fully amorphized layer of 60 nm is generated, even for the lowest fluence employed. Subsequent annealing in air, in the range 800–1250 K, was applied to restore tentatively the crystallinity and promote the substitutional incorporation of Eu in the crystal. Only a partial recrystallization of the damaged layer was observed. For as-implanted samples, XPS spectra clearly reveal europium in Eu2+ and Eu3+ states, and the Nb5+ ions are driven to lower charge states.

The crystal structure of Te(N3)3SbF6 containing the first binary tellurium–nitrogen cation, triazidotellurium(IV) (Te(N3)3+), has been determined by X-ray crystallography. Single crystals of Te(N3)3SbF6 are monoclinic, space group P21/c with a = 9.201(6), b = 8.445(4), c = 13.582(7) Å, β = 100.36(5)°, Z = 4, final R1 = 0.036 for 1286 observed reflections. The structure consists of discrete Te(N3)3+ cations and distorted octahedral SbF6− anions, with some cation–anion interactions. The average Te—Nα—Nβ—Nγ bond distances in Te(N3)3+ are Te—Nα, 1.994(7); Nα—Nβ, 1.237(11); and Nβ—Nγ, 1.116(12) Å. The average bond angles about the Te, Nα, and Nβ atoms are 94.1(3)°, 116.5(6)°, and 173.7(9)°. Structural correlations with other TeX3+ species have yielded an estimate of the electronegativity of the N3− group to be 3.1 ± 0.1.
