The prudent management of hazardous materials, from their procurement to their proper disposal, is a critical element of a departmental laboratory safety program. However, it is known that the management of chemical residues involves a high cost and few studies are carried out aiming at assisting in the implementation of this system of management mainly about educational and research institutions. This work therefore presents the economic feasibility analysis in the implementation of the chemical waste management system in laboratories of a Brazilian University. The data were obtained through a questionnaire applied to the technicians of the laboratories generating chemical residues, these being, teaching, research and clinics of the university. The economic-financial analysis has shown that the internal treatment of waste with the construction of a laboratory in the university is an unfeasible project. However, the project is feasible using the already existing structure, such as the chemistry laboratory in the idle periods. In this way, waste treatment on the university campus is feasible, in relation to the costs involved with outsourcing. However, it is necessary to ensure that the chemical standards for sewage disposal, as stipulated by the responsible bodies, are achieved.

It has been a challenge for Malaysia to handle solid waste management for more than a decade. The increase in population size has led to an increase in the waste amount contributed by Malaysians. Due to that, proper solid waste management is essential in protecting the environment. There are many ways to execute solid waste management but developing countries may find it challenging to find the best way to dispose of waste efficiently. The same phenomenon seems to happen on university campuses as well. This article aims to propose a smart waste management system for university campuses. Most of the related work concentrates on detecting bin levels, despite making it a full-fledged system that comprises several modules regardless of web or mobile platform. A prototype of a smart bin is proposed, and this paper discusses its architecture and functionality. A web-based user application is also proposed in this article. With these components, the system enables the user to obtain information on the bins around them and can help the management to manage solid waste more efficiently. With the help of the Internet of Things and Cloud services, the system can achieve a greener and more sustainable campus environment. The proposed system will also be enhanced further to increase the awareness among the university students to move forward to a greener campus.

In most developing countries, solid waste components are generally commingled. Sorting of solid waste is one of the most important activities in the material recovering process of the integrated solid waste management system. If solid waste is sorted, about 30% of the work is done. Several methods exist for sorting comingled solid waste. The work presented in this paper involved the study of solid waste source sorting alternatives in Nigerian Universities. A site-specific study was carried out to characterize the solid waste generated in the University of Benin. Alternative concepts for sorting of solid waste were considered and evaluated. Source sorting was then selected for this study. The study revealed that about 14.56% of biodegradables, 42.26% of plastics, 39.62% of paper waste and 3.56% of metal waste are generated in the office and classroom areas of University of Benin. The study also showed that there is poor attitude to solid waste issues as the maximum cooperation realized on source sorting of solid waste was only about 50% for the waste-bin designated for plastic. The results obtained from the study also indicated that intensive sensitization of the generators on the benefits of source sorting is required for effective source sorting.

The accumulation of refuse on any place or environment creates fertile breeding ground for rodents, flies, which are disease vectors and also affect the aesthetics of the place, this in turns poses health hazard to the public. In this study, solid waste management in Port Harcourt Metropolis, it causes, effect and possible solutions ranging from waste generation, storage, segregation, collection, treatment and disposal has been investigated. Primary and secondary sources of investigation were used to obtain the required data for the study. Dump sites within the Port Harcourt Metropolis were also visited for proper evaluation and on the spot assessment. It was observed that the conventional waste management system is still being used instead of the integrated solid waste management system (1SWMS) and that about 75% of the storage facilities in the city are sub-standard and insanitary with no color coded containers for different kinds of waste. Results shows that the composition of waste generated included garbage (41%), paper and plastic (35%), scrap metal (15%), construction waste (4%), sludge (3%), expired chemical waste and drugs (2%) and collection of solid waste at open space transfer station account for about 70%. These shows poor solid waste management approach and the consequences ranges from aesthetic degradation to pollution of the environment hence the use of solid waste management professionals and sanitarians is recommended.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/njt.v36i1.33
