In translation studies, it is sometimes assumed by some scholars that bilinguals are in possession of an innate competence for translating. In this research, aspects of bilingualism and translation competences are investigated. The questions driving the research are: is being a bilingual enough to be a translator? And what are the competences a translator needs to perform a good translation? This article addresses these questions through a comprehensive literature review and a small-scale empirical study. First, relevant literature on bilingualism and translation competence was reviewed. Second, an empirical investigation was carried out in which bilinguals and professional translators translated a source text to generate empirical data on the use of two languages and relevant translation competences. The results have shown that being a translator is more than being bilingual and going to a translation school is not a guarantee to be a good translator. The subject matter knowledge also matters. The research not only yield insights into the description and development of translation competence, but also provides potential avenues for translators’ self-improvement.

Works of literature have clearly attested to the fact that cash crop production as a global phenomenon has a track of history. Past and contemporary scholars on economics, agriculture, and history show little commitment to the subject matter of cash crop production globally. Related studies are reviewed in order to develop sensible solutions and add value to the limited sources on the area (finding). Thus, this research aims at a systematic literature review of relevant literature on cash crop production. Literature that relates to the subject matter is assembled, examined, and incorporated according to the need of this systematic literature review. We focus on the studies that encompass cash crop sustainability, cash crop smallholders/small-scale/households, cash crop farming/farmers, cash crop and food production, groundnut production, sustainable groundnut production, groundnut seed production, groundnut small-holders farmers, and contribution, impact, and the role of groundnut production on the economy.

This paper describes a study of the use of prototyping approaches in information systems (IS) development. It reports a comprehensive literature review of prototyping from which we developed a taxonomy of prototyping practice. This analysis guided an empirical study which has collected data on IS practitioners’ formulations of the current experience of prototyping in UK IS development organizations. These formulations are compared with data collected in a number of case studies of prototyping projects.

This paper argues that a combination of entrepreneurship and innovation is a crucial factor for the long-term sustainability of e-commerce and e-businesses. Entrepreneurship and innovation are positively related to each other and interact to help an organization to flourish. The study takes an integrative approach to exploring the synergies between entrepreneurship and innovation and to analysing the factors that foster an interaction between the two. Case studies of entrepreneurial and innovative dot.com companies were conducted to complement a comprehensive literature review of entrepreneurship and innovation. This empirical study contributes to a better understanding of the existing theories and practices of entrepreneurship and innovation in organizations.

This study aims to investigate the effect of leadership and organizational culture on organizational effectiveness of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). In the study, after a comprehensive literature review, an empirical study by means of a survey questionnaire has been conducted to find out the effect of leadership and organizational culture on effectiveness. In the study, organizational culture is conceptualized as motivational climate within the organization, the atmosphere that relies on trust and confidence and willingness of members to take responsibility and the leadership is analyzed in terms of being democratic, respecting others, being participative in decision making and taking risks when necessary. The effectiveness of NGOs refers to the achievement of the previously set objectives, using benchmarking as an indicator, and diversifying the sources of revenue. The results obtained from the survey show that organizational culture and leadership both have positive effects on effectiveness of NGOs.

Purpose – This paper aims to present the results of a comprehensive literature review with regard to the application of Tawarruq in the Islamic banking system covering the period between 2011 and before. The review aims to synthesize the previous research, capsulize the structural overview inasmuch as future research might be oriented and identify the gaps and direction for future research. Design/methodology/approach – A range of published and unpublished documents was collated and filtered based on the defined rules to identify the determinants of the writing. The documents were then be classified into few segments in which content analysis was conducted to capsulize the essence of the subject matter described in the literature. Findings – The analysis demonstrates that most of the studies discussed the fundamental theories which concerning the area of jurisprudence, while a few of them did discuss the application aspect in the banking environment. However, none of the operational process is discussed in-depth, whereas the risk of Shari’ah non-compliance might arise in the detail transaction. Research limitations/implications – The databases used in the search might not contain all the documents that could be relevant for the review. Furthermore, the defined-rule for document searching and selection excluded the out-of-scope documents that might be relevant. Originality/value – This paper identifies the gaps that become apparent in the literature in assisting researchers to ascertain the interesting areas as well as the direction for future research.

The article deals with gastronomic discourse, in particular with culinary terminology. The relevance of this topic in relation to translation studies is determined, considering the fact that the translation of culinary books, television programs, menus and names of dishes is increasingly becoming the subject of the work of a transaltor. The article analyzes the problems of the culinary terminology transaltion in the Ukrainian language, taking into account the cultural aspect of the source text. For adapting the translation to native culture translators use two opposite strategies of foreignization and domestication. Since most gastronomic lexical units have foreign origin such translation methods as transliteration, transcription and explication are considered in the article.

In Translation Studies, the idiom is usually viewed as an important constitutive component of the source text and a possible translation problem. Several strategies and techniques of rendering idioms have been developed and discussed, and a plethora of research is focused on the ways in which selected source text idioms are rendered in the target texts. However, despite the fact that idioms frequently appear in target texts as counterparts of non-idiomatic source text expressions, the idiom has not found recognition as a valid translation technique so far and is not listed as such in relevant literature. In this paper, I will argue that it deserves this status. Although the research is based upon pure idioms, the validity of the postulate can be claimed for other types of idioms too. The material analysed was retrieved from the novels The great Gatsby by F.S. Fitzgerald and Death on the Nile by A. Christie and two German renditions of each.

Whilst the concept of explicitation has spawned many research projects in the field of Translation Studies, implicitation remains an understudied area. This article addresses that research gap, reporting on the findings of an empirical study on Danish translators’ use of implicitations in their Spanish to Danish translations of an excerpt from a judgment. The aim of the study was to examine, on the one hand, whether the translators used implicitations in their translations, and, on the other hand, whether differences could be observed between experts and non-experts. The data reported here consisted of a Spanish source text and 10 translations into Danish by five experts and five non-experts. The translations were analysed using qualitative methods (consisting of contrastive text analysis) followed by a quantitative synthesis. Overall, the findings revealed that implicitations were very rare and, consequently, no conclusive results could be drawn in relation to translation expertise.

Background: Research shows that there is a high prevalence of suicide among nurses. Despite this, it has been 15 years since the last literature review on the subject was published. Aim: The aim of this article is to review the knowledge currently available on the risk of suicide among nurses and on contributory risk factors. Method: A search was conducted in electronic databases using keywords related to prevalence and risk factors of suicide among nurses. The abstracts were analyzed by reviewers according to selection criteria. Selected articles were submitted to a full-text review and their key elements were summarized. Results: Only nine articles were eligible for inclusion in this review. The results of this literature review highlight both the troubling high prevalence of suicide among nurses as well as the persistent lack of studies that examine this issue. Conclusion: Considering that the effects of several factors related to nurses' work and work settings are associated with high stress, distress, or psychiatric problems, we highlight the relevance of investigating work-related factors associated with nurses' risk of suicide. Several avenues for future studies are discussed as well as possible research methods.
