Education institution may not be separated by social system. It can be formal and informal education. A formal education institution such as school, Islamic school or Islamic boarding school is in social environment and bringing a basic value and law from its institution. Meanwhile, Islamic education institution is believed as tool to reach the aim of education. The aim of education is hard to reach if there is no leadership in it. Copyright © 2014 by Al-Ta'lim All right reserved

This article shows the numerous benefits created in the 7th-13th century A.D. by a primary education institution named Kuttab. Kuttab is an educational institution that teaches the Qur'an to be read and memorized, history to be studied, and Arabic verses. This article utilizes an approach to literature research, gathering different references related to Kuttab. The empirical content process then evaluates the relation, and conclusions are drawn from the reference analysis. This paper concludes that with education in Madrasah Ibtidaiyah, Kuttab institutions have a similar curriculum. The excellence of Kuttab focuses more on memorizing the Qur'an so that in the golden age (7-12 years), Kuttab students will remember the entire material of the Qur'an, in addition to teachers who have excelled and skills. Unlike Ibtidaiyah madrasahs, which do not focus students on memorizing the Qur'an, and as teachers in Kuttab, teachers are also far from professionalism. In comparison to the current madrasah Ibtidaiyah curriculum, the learning materials in Kuttab are thin. Keywords : curriculum, kuttab, madrasah, teacher, student.

Discussion about the need for professionalization has accompanied the development of informal education from its very early stages. Some people believe informal education is staffed by temporary players whose main value derived in part from the fact that their work embodies the principles of altruism, hence they need no professional training. In contrast, others believe that work in this field is complex, hence appropriate training settings should be set up for those working in informal education as well. The aim of this research was to evaluate the perception of formal education by informal education educators. The research methodology is qualitative; it employs a structured interview of the participants and a semiotic analysis of pictures that participants were asked to provide that they felt represented the formal education system. The main findings of the semiotic analysis clearly show that the pictures chosen raise connotations of rigidity, emptiness, loneliness, sadness, insufficiency and boredom. Those images are strongly connected to the debate of recruiting resourceful and capable teachers to formal education systems in the era of accountability. Keywords: formal education, informal education, informal code, semiotics.
