Cleaning our seas and oceans of plastic litter Increased global production and poor waste management have led to a build-up of plastic litter in the world’s oceans. This has a devastating effects on ecosystems and marine life. The flow of plastics into the oceans occurs through a variety of pathways, but rivers are one of the largest contributors. The LIFE SouPLess project aims to develop technology to catch plastics from rivers before they spread to the seas and oceans. It is a 4.5 years project (July 2018 – December 2022). Three main links of the chain of riverine plastic recovery will be tackled: from locating plastic hotspots with a dedicated numerical model to effectively collecting the plastics with systems and finding cost-effective solutions for post-processing the collected litter.

In this paper we discussed the new design, fabrication and testing of a mechanical can crusher taking into deliberation the force analysis and ergonomic factors that will enable people to use this mechanical can crusher especially in Botswana rural areas. The process of crushing cans is of vital importance as it saves a percentage of space for can disposal and also makes it easier for these cans to be transported to recycling centers or landfill areas. The methods and processes used to bring this project to life include welding, cutting, bending, drilling and assembly operations. This project study is mainly about generating a new concept of a mechanical can crusher that is compact to transport from one location to another and makes can crushing easy and fascinating to the general public so as to promote people buy into crushing in Sub-Sahara market. Even though there are numerous sorts of the mechanical would crusher be able to as of now in presence, this model provides a more practical usage than previous one with the desired mechanical advantage of 10, machinability to crush the entire cans to 25% of their original size and 100% efficiency for the entire rounds.

  A beach resort is a tourist spot, which is excellent for family outings and friends. It is a great place to relax and enjoy. Biliran has known for several different tourist spots, especially the beaches. Beach is one of the famous tourist spots, and those beaches are a haven for scuba divers because of the abundance of marine life. The study’s goal was to find out how beach resorts in Almeria, Biliran, dealt with waste. A descriptive research design was adopted in this study. It's descriptive in the sense that it describes beach resort trash management procedures. Leaves and seaweeds are the most general rubbish found at resorts, according to the findings of the study. According to the results, management should provide more training to employees to improve their knowledge of work and how to become more effective workers in their respective fields.

Coastal hydrodynamic analyses are basic for the planning and assessment of activities in that area. An important application of these•analyses is harbour lay-out and location. In this paper, hydrodynamic results of a numerical model based on Boussinesq-type equations are presented in the issue of Computer Aided Harbour Engineering. This model achleves overall second-order accuracy and has efficient modules of pre- and post-processing of information. The model has been used as a CAD tool for the planning and design of Spanish harbours. Its flexibility and economy of operation allow the model to be used, in the future, as a module of a global expert system for CAD harbour lay-out. This global expert system will provide a fully automatic design process. The output of this system will consist in the final optimized harbour configuration, considering all Imposed constraints and requirements.

Waste recovery is an important aspect towards human and environmental health protection. Unfortunately, proper food waste management is among the serious challenges in the field of solid waste management worldwide. Therefore, it is of great importance to conduct studies towards achieving efficient and cost-effective approaches for food waste management. This study investigated the potential of recovering food waste through maggots’ production as animal feed. The influence of fly attractant application on maggot production was also investigated. The study also investigated the potential of maggot production for waste recovery and reduction. Four different types of food waste (starch food leftovers, rotten bananas and peels, rotten pineapple and peels, and rotten oranges) were used in the investigation process. From the results, it was observed that the application of fly attractants had a significant effect on the production of maggots as determined by the weights after harvesting. Average weight of 94 g/kg of maggot was achieved from banana materials with an application of fly attractant during the 8th day of the cultivation; which is equivalent to a 32.4% increase from the same day when the material was cultured without applying fly attractant. Also, from the starch materials, about 77 g/kg of maggot weight was achieved; which is a 54.6% increase from the same day and the same material but without application of fly attractant. Moreover, the relative dry weight reduction in the trials varied from 52.5% to 82.4%.

This paper presents the analysis methods for design of automotive bumper covers. The bumper covers are plastic structures attached to the front and rear ends of an automobile and are expected to absorb energy in a minor collision. One requirement in design of the bumper covers is to minimize the bumper deflection within a limited range under specific loadings at specific locations based on the design guideline. To investigate the stiffness performance under various loading conditions, a numerical model based on the explicit dynamic finite element analysis (FEA) using the commercial FEA solver, LS-DYNA, is developed to analyze the design. The experimental tests are also carried out to verify the numerical model. The thickness of the bumper cover is a design variable which usually varies from 3 to 4 mm depending on locations. To improve the stiffness of the bumper, an optimal design for the bumper under a pre-defined loading condition is identified by using the topology optimization approach, which is an optimal design method to obtain the optimal layout of an initial design domain under specific boundary conditions. The outcome of this study provides an efficient and cost-effective method to predict and improve the design of automotive bumper covers.

Abstract Cuttings reinjection (CRI) project at OFFSHORE ABU DHABI field achieved successful operation with three million barrels injected to date with zero subsurface failures setting up an environmentally friendly and cost-effective waste management success story that complies with zero discharge requirements. The project exceeded initial expectations by accommodating non-aqueous drilling waste from jack-up drilling rigs in addition to artificial islands own rigs. Subsurface assurance and engineering workflows proved to be effective in ensuring subsurface containment of drilling waste in challenging environment while ensuring efficiency of operation to meet demanding drilling schedules. Injection schedules and procedures were based on results of thorough subsurface FEED study and global best practices. Slurry fluid quality requirements were verified thru extensive laboratory tests. Throughout injection operation downhole pressure and temperature of the injection well was vigilantly monitored and analyzed along with well temperature survey and periodic fracture modeling updates of the fracture waste domain to ensure seamless fracturing of formation and containment of waste domain within selected formation. More than 3 million barrels of drill cuttings and associated drilling waste have been safely and successfully disposed of into a single injection zone of two cuttings reinjection wells over five years of project operation to date. No downtime was experienced and no impact to drilling schedule was induced demonstrating high capability of technology when designed and executed in right way. Results of actual injections showed accuracy and robustness of the engineering workflow implemented from Job design, planning and execution The paper presents unique and knowledge-based steps that contributed to success of project and set high bar for region for the drilling waste management.

Abstract Following Tantawan field suspension of production, considerable volume of contaminated crude (high level of mercury and arsenic content) remains on board in Tantawan FPSO. These volumes are deemed as waste hydrocarbon sludge that hold no commercial value and must be urgently removed from the vessel as per safety requirements to maintain the vessel class and certification, according to Tantawan FPSO integrity condition. After review of many alternatives, offshore subsurface disposal initiative is the safest and most cost-effective means for disposal. Since subsurface disposal of such waste, highly mercury and arsenic contaminated crude, has never been performed in the Gulf of Thailand, several aspects need to be considered from technical and environmental perspective and public sector concerns. A cross functional team of Reservoir Engineer, Geologist, Facilities Engineer, Health and Safety, Policy, Government and Public Affair and commercial advisor, has co-devised a holistic waste management plan to inject waste into Tantawan reservoirs after obtaining required approvals by the government. Many challenges including limitation of the FPSO pumping system, sludge properties and seasonal increment weather, were encountered during the execution phase and many remedial actions were taken to mitigate their impact. Cross functional team initiatives on heater installation, adjusting injection procedure, and additional disposal well approval helped address project challenges. Entire volume of sludge was safely injected to subsurface reservoirs with cost effective operation. The success of this offshore injection process has reduced the cost to less than 10% compared to onshore disposal option to asset joint venture. The results set a new standard for Thailand petroleum waste management policy. Following this success, decommissioning of all remaining of Tantawan field are progressing as scheduled. This paper will outline the holistic approach of hydrocarbon sludge management process including the subsurface injection identifcation, stakeholder engagement, environmental impact assessment and execution challenges. Lessons learned from this paper would help other offshore operators to effectively manage hydrocarbon sludge, which demonstrate how the oil and gas industry plays a vital role in protecting the environment.
