What is it about the teaching-research nexus that inspires engineering undergraduates to want more and become researchers themselves? In this study, we sought to discover more about the influences on current PhD students’ choices to embark on higher degrees by research in various fields in engineering in an Australian research-intensive university. An online survey and follow-up focus group discussion revealed that these students are driven primarily by a genuine interest in research itself, rather than other factors such as career advancement (although this too, plays a role). While this is not particularly surprising, what did become apparent was the specific undergraduate experiences that most strongly influenced their decision to undertake research degrees, including enjoying doing project-based work, being exposed to lecturers who were passionate about their own research, and working on a vacation research scholarship. Further analysis reveals that the weighting of various influences changes according to whether the students are local Australian graduates or international PhD candidates.

Pendahuluan. Sekolah-ku’ merupakan suatu program yang bertujuan memberikan kesempatan anak-anak penyandang kanker untuk belajar bagi yang ingin mengikuti pelajaran sekolahnya sehingga bila mereka telah menyelesaikan pengobatan/ perawatan penyakit kanker dapat segera mengikuti pelajaran kembali. Tujuan dari intervensi ini adalah meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan para guru ‘Sekolah-ku’ dalam menerapkan prinsip-prinsip theraplay dalam kegiatan pembelajaran dan interaksi dengan anak didik penderita kanker.  Metode. Modul  kegiatan akan disusun berdasarkan  sudut  pandang  teori Theraplay dan data kualitatif yang didapatkan dari focus group discussion (FGD) kepada guru-guru. Melalui FGD, dipetakan pengetahuan dasar para guru mengenai kegiatan bermain. Berdasarkan hasil pemetaan tersebut, akan disusun modul pelatihan dengan pendekatan Theraplay yang terdiri dari 2 sesi. Untuk mengetahui efek dari pelatihan, akan dilakukan pengetahuan prinsip dan aplikasi Theraplay sebelum dan sesudah pelatihan. Evaluasi dari efek pelatihan dilakukan dengan membandingkan pengetahuan prinsip dan aplikasi Theraplay sebelum dan sesudah pelatihan. Hasil. Terdapat perbedaan pengetahuan perbedaan yang signifikan dalam pengetahuan mengenai theraplay (Z=-3.236, p<0.05) pada peserta pelatihan sebelum dan sesudah kegiatan pelatihan. Dari hasil follow up tampak bahwa perilaku yang mengindikasikan dimensi-dimensi dalam theraplay telah muncul sebesar 52,78% hingga 86,11%.

AbstractObjectiveFormative research to facilitate the development, packaging and delivery of a culturally acceptable nutrition intervention for HIV-infected women in rural Kenya for an intervention trial.DesignFocus group discussion on three areas: (i) ingredients and form of the nutrition intervention, (ii) packaging and delivery and (iii) monitoring of adherence. Two single-blind taste tests with eleven different porridge formulations of various combinations of maize flour, soyabeans, peanuts, sorghum, mung beans, dried fish, raisins and dried whole milk. Follow-up acceptability focus group discussion was also conducted.SettingVoi, Kenya, community based.SubjectsFocus group discussion and two taste tests (twenty-one women aged 16–55 years). Follow-up acceptability focus group discussion (four women enrolled in intervention trial).ResultsThe preferred porridge for taste consisted of maize, soyabeans and peanuts. For animal protein, dried whole milk and dried fish were used. Although the women disliked the taste of dried fish, it was acceptable if added in small undetectable quantities. Sugar over lime was favoured for taste. Women believed they could consume at least two cups of porridge per day without displacing their usual meals. The optimal delivery interval was believed to be every two weeks in individual serving packages. Women who had been consuming porridge for several weeks felt the taste was acceptable for long-term consumption.ConclusionsThis formative research resulted in the development, packaging and delivery of a nutrient-dense food supplement using local ingredients to meet the dietary needs of the population and acceptable for daily consumption by women in Kenya for evaluation in an intervention trial.

Purpose Advancement in Information and communication technologies (ICTs) has revolutionised Library and Information Science (LIS) education and libraries. Both theory and practice have been transformed completely. LIS education programmes have become highly competitive and must be market-driven and technology-oriented. At the same time, academic libraries have been transformed and have become dynamic. Fostering a close collaboration between LIS educators and practitioners can multiply their strength and abilities by sharing educational resources and theoretical and practical knowledge. This paper aims to present the findings of a study carried out to investigate the current status of collaboration among LIS educators and library practitioners at the University of Botswana. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected using self-administered structured questionnaires from both LIS educators at the Department of Library and Information Studies (DLIS) and practicing librarians working at the University of Botswana Library (UBL). To follow-up some of the issues, an interview was carried out with a subject librarian and a focus group discussion method was used to discuss some of the challenges from the findings. Findings The major collaborative activities from the DLIS staff were identified as the following: creating awareness of library resources and promoting library usage among students, facilitating library material selection and inviting librarians as guest lecturers to teach in the classroom. The main collaborative activities from practicing librarians were found to be the following: delivering information literacy instruction, providing professional/practical experience to students and information sharing with the DLIS teaching staff. The major challenges were identified as the following: different cultures of educators and librarians, lack of need to collaborate and lack of formal policy at the department and the university level. Research limitations/implications The UBL has 51 library staff members. All the librarians were not included in this research study, only senior librarians and library management were involved in the study. No theoretical framework was used to carry out the study. The questionnaire was designed based on the general literature in the field of professional collaboration among faculty and educators in the information profession. The follow-up interview and focus group discussion were conducted to address the collaborative activities and challenges that were acknowledged by at least 50 per cent of the participants. Issues with less than 50 per cent responses were considered insignificant to follow-up. Follow-up interview was conducted only with one subject librarian. As all subject librarians have the same job profile and undertake the similar activities, it was assumed that one subject librarian can represent others. Originality/value This research paper contributes to the body of literature. It may be useful for other LIS schools and libraries that work in similar environments, and it also opens up avenues for further research on this topical issue.

Using empirical and normative approach, data collected by literature studies, interviews, Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and observation. Data were analyzed by using the hermeneutics (interpretation) and deductive method.T</em><em>his research reveals that the legal framework of judicial review by Supreme Court and Constitutional Court are the Article 24 A paragraph (1) and Article 24 paragraph C (1) Indonesia basic law 1945. Constitutional court follow up the legal framework by issued PMK No. 06/PMK/2005 on guidelines of the judicial review procedure, while supreme court follow up the legal framework by issued supreme court regulation No 1/20</em><em>1</em><em>1 T</em><em>here are two problems on judicial review by supreme court and constitutional coourt. First, conceptually, the implementation of judicial review by supreme court and constitutional court will make hard the control of norms herarchy in the manner of constitution enforcement. Problematika <em>judicial review </em>melalui Mahkamah Agung dan Mahkamah Konstitusi, Pertama, secara konseptual pelaksanaan pengujian peraturan perundang-undangan ditangan MA dan MK akan menyulitkan integrasi pengawalan hirarki norma mulai dari perda sampai UUD dalam rangka penegakkan konstitusi. Tujuan dari studi ini yaitu melihat gambaran dari kesadaran terhadap kampanye media SALAM Sehat, penilaian konten media SALAM Sehat, evaluasi formatif dan evaluasi proses dalam pelaksanaan kampanye media SALAM Sehat sebagai inisiasi dari Health Promoting University (HPU) di Fakultas Kedokteran, Kesehatan Masyarakat, dan Keperawatan Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKKMK UGM). Kampanye ini berfokus pada konsumsi buah dan sayur setiap hari, aktivitas fisik secara rutin, dan menjaga kesehatan mental yang dilakukan dari Bulan Juni – Oktober di mana ‘SALAM’ merupakan singkatan dari SAntap buah dan sayur setiap hari, LAkukan aktivitas fisik secara rutin, and Menjaga kesehatan mental. Metode yang digunakan dalam studi ini yaitu desain post test melalui cross sectional online survey untuk evaluasi kuantitatif dan menggunakan desain studi kasus melalui Focus Group Discussion untuk evaluasi kualitatif. Hasil studi ini yaitu kampanye telah dilakukan melalui penyebaran media online dan pemasangan media cetak yang dalam prosesnya bekerjasama dengan organisasi mahasiswa yang ada di FKKMK serta melibatkan partisipasi civitas akademika lainnya seperti Dekan FKKMK, Wakil Dekan FKKMK, dan Penanggung Jawab HPU UGM. Penyebaran media online berupa poster dan filler melalui akun dan grup organisasi. Pemasangan media cetak berupa Traffic Light Food Labelling di kantin, banner motivasi jalan kaki di kantong parkir, poster motivasi aktivitas fisik di tangga, dan stiker motivasi menggunakan tangga di lift. Sebagian besar responden memiliki kesadaran terhadap Kampanye Media SALAM Sehat. Pesan media SALAM Sehat dinilai telah memenuhi ketentuan elemen pesan. Kampanye ini membutuhkan pengembangan pesan yang konsisten, terintegrasi dengan kebijakan, pengadaan lingkungan, serta kerjasama yang lebih luas. Kampanye ini dinilai inovatif dengan melibatkan kerjasama antarorganisasi mahasiswa, namun terdapat kendala berupa koordinasi internal yang bergantung pada budaya organisasi.

Being a young volunteer provides an opportunity for volunteers to build stronger awareness of social issues, such as the fulfilment of equal rights for persons with disabilities. For young volunteers, participation in volunteerism can form strong characters. This research attempts to describe the forms of strength of character in young volunteers for persons with disabilities and their development. Data collection methods used were Online Survey (Study 1) and Nominal Group Technique and Focus Group Discussion (Study 2). Both studies involved young volunteers in communities and organizations with disabilities in Malang Regency and Kota aged between 18-30 years (Study 1 with N = 59 people and Study 2 with N = 6 people). From the research, it is found that the character strength becomes the modality of participation as a volunteer and develops in the process of involvement of young volunteers for persons with disabilities.[Aktivitas sebagai relawan muda menyediakan kesempatan bagi pelakunya untuk membangun kesadaran yang lebih kuat terkait dengan isu-isu sosial, termasuk kesadaran terkait pemenuhan kesetaraan hak bagi penyandang disabilitas. Bagi para relawan muda, partisipasi dalam aktivitas berbasis kesukarelawanan dapat membentuk beberapa kekuatan karakter, antara lain kekuatan karakter yang dicetuskan oleh Peterson & Seligman (2004). Penelitian ini berusaha menggambarkan bentuk-bentuk kekuatan karakter dalam diri relawan-relawan muda bagi penyandang disabilitas dan perkembangannya. Metode pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah Online Survey (Study 1) dan Nominal Group Technique serta Focus Group Discussion (Study 2). Kedua study tersebut melibatkan relawan muda di komunitas dan organisasi penyandang disabilitas kabupaten dan kota Malang berusia antara 18 - 30 tahun. Critical thinking is an important life skill that needs to be nurtured in young minds during the primary education years. This study explored pre-service teachers’ perception of barriers to their efforts in promoting critical thinking skills in classrooms, and further explored possible solutions to overcome these perceived barriers. The study used an exploratory mixed-method research design. Data were collected through an online survey and subsequently a focus group discussion to explore further the results of the quantitative data. Twenty-two pre-service teachers responded to the online survey, and subsequently seven pre-service teachers were selected for the focus group discussion. Issues related to teacher preparedness to assess pupils’ critical thinking skills, inadequate background knowledge on critical thinking, and lack of appropriate resources emerged as barriers to promoting the development of critical thinking skills in classrooms. The study suggests changes in teaching methods courses offered in teacher preparatory programs and changing perceptions toward critical thinking skills as possible measures to promote the development of critical thinking skills in the classroom.

AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis masalah yang selanjutnya menjadi langkah strategis berupa rencana tindak lanjut pengembangan pasar modal syariah yang dari tahun ke tahun mengalami peningkatan. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah studi literatur yang berdasarkan pada jurnal-jurnal. Pengumpulan data  dilakukan melalui Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Selanjutnya data yang telah terkumpul dianalisis dengan menggunakan analisis Urgency, Seriousness, dan Growth (USG). Berdasarkan analisis USG diperoleh masalah-masalah yang terjadi yang dapat menghambat pengembangan pasar modal syariah di Indonesia. Permasalahan yang difokuskan diantaranya sistem ekonomi yang belum menunjang, kurangnya pengetahuan produk investasi di pasar modal syariah, persepsi masyarakat kurang memadai karena kurangnya literasi, trust issues terhadap produk syariah dan minimnya regulasi. Dari permasalahan tersebut dibuatkan rencana tindak kerja sebagai solusi yang akhirnya dijadikan strategi pengembangan pasar modal syariah di Indonesia. Diagram fishbone digunakan untuk mengetahui strategi dalam optimalisasi pengembangan pasar modal syariah yang berawal dari masalah perkembangan pasar modal syariah di Indonesia. The research method used is a literature study based on journals. Data collection through Focus Group Discussion (FGD). And then, the data that has been collected was analyzed using the analysis of Urgency, Seriousness, and Growth (USG). Based on the USG analysis, the results of the problems that occur that can hinder the development of the Islamic capital market in Indonesia are obtained. The problems that are focused on include an unsupported economic system, lack of knowledge of investment products in the Islamic capital market, inadequate public perception due to lack of literacy, trust issues on sharia products and lack of regulation. From these problems, a work action plan was made as a solution which eventually became a strategy for developing the Islamic capital market in Indonesia. The fishbone diagram is used to determine the strategy in optimizing the development of the Islamic capital market which started from the problem of the development of the Islamic capital market in Indonesia. The fishbone diagram shows the problems that become a reference in the strategy for developing the Islamic capital market in Indonesia.

Salah satu habitat gajah yang masih tersisa adalah Kawasan Taman Nasional Gunung Leuser (TNGL), terutama di wilayah Besitang. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengidentifikasi karakteristik sosial ekonomi, kepemilikan lahan, pemetaan wilayah dan mitigasi konflik manusia dengan gajah di Resort Besitang, TNGL. Metode pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan penyebaran kuesioner, wawancara dan Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Analisis data menggunakan tabel frekuensi dan analisa deskriptif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa wilayah yang memiliki potensi konflik gajah di Resort Besitang adalah Daerah Halaban, Aras Senapal, Sekundur, Bukit Selamat dan Bukit Mas dengan intensitas konflik rendah sampai tinggi. Penyebab utama konflik manusia dengan gajah adalah fragmentasi kawasan hutan,  ketidakpastian status lahan di daerah penyangga, pertumbuhan penduduk yang tinggi dan meningkatnya pendatang di wilayah Besitang, perambahan dan ilegal logging yang terus terjadi, minimnya kesadaran masyarakat dan peranan lembaga desa dalam mendukung konservasi gajah. Rekomendasi resolusi mitigasi konflik gajah diantaranya: 1) memperbaiki habitat gajah yang sudah terfragmentasi di dalam kawasan TNGL; 2) meningkatkan peran Tim CRU (Conservation Response Unit); 3) membentuk unit reaksi cepat penanganan konflik gajah dengan melibatkan para pihak; 4) menanam jenis tanaman yang tidak disukai dan dijauhi oleh gajah; 5) mereduksi ketergantungan masyarakat akan sistem pertanian yang membutuhkan lahan yang luas; 6) mengembangkan program untuk membantu peningkatan hasil panen; dan,  7) penyuluhan untuk meningkatkan pemahaman bahwa gajah merupakan bagian dari ekosistem yang harus lestari.   Kata kunci: gajah, konflik, habitat, Besitang, Taman Nasional Gunung Leuser

Perkembangan Teknologi informasi dan komunikasi di era globalisasi, demokratisasi dan desentralisasi sudah menjadi kebutuhan sekaligus tantangan khususnya bagi pemerintah daerah dalam komunikasi pembangunan untuk pelayanan publik dan pemberdayaan masyarakat. Penelitian menggunakan metode kualitatif studi kasus, dengan pengumpulan data melalui dokumentasi, wawancara, pengamatan dan Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Subjek penelitian dipilih secara purposif yaitu pemerintah daerah di Eks-KaresidenanBanyumas Jawa Tengah, akademisi dan civil society. Penelitian dianalisis dengan analisis interaktif melalui reduksi data, penyajian data, penarikan kesimpuan dan verifikasi data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) Pentingnya komunikasi pembangunan dengan media teknologi informasi dan komunikasi melalui e-Government untuk meningkatkan pelayanan publik yang baik, cepat dan responsif, adanya partisipasi aktif dari publik dan transparansi baik anggaran serta program pembangunan. (2) Perlunya mengantisipasi adanya kesenjangan teknologi informasisehingga membutuhkan peningkatan kompetensi sumber daya manusia di pemerintahan daerah dan publik, serta memperluas fasilitas akses jaringan informasi.Kata kunci: komunikasi pembangunan, pelayanan publik, partisipasi, teknologi informasi, transparansi
