This research article glances in a few words at the concept of ecofeminism and the interconnectedness of woman and nature and their struggle. Earth belongs to all creatures on this planet so human has to share equally with them. All living things on earth have equal share on each and everything on this planet between them, But for the game called survival, human is destroying other things for their own benefits only. Since humanity is inseparable from nature, it is necessary to live in harmony to save the human race as well as the world from the damage and destructions which that demands the need of co existence. It is not only a movement but philosophies. Anita Desai is deeply fascinated by ecofeminism perception and through her novels she is trying to lead her readers to believe that nature and woman are resolving tools to the universal problems arising in today’s scenario. Through the close reading of Desai’s novel, I have explored the concept of ecofeminism. The present paper tries to reveal the features of ecofeminism through the portrayal of characters- Nanda Kaul and Sita in the Fire on The Mountain and Where shall We go This Summer? Respectively.

The women’s studies have been receiving increasing academic and disciplinary recognition throughout the globe. The writers are determined to narrate, respond and react to the place of women in society. The purpose of the present paper is to redefine the image of women in post colonial Indian English literature. The post colonial Indian English writers focus on major issues relating to woman such as her awakening to the realization of her individuality, her breaking away with the traditional image. The transformation of the idealized women into an assertive self willed woman, searching and discovering her true self is described by various Indian Writers like Anita Desai, Sashi Deshpande, Nayantara Sahgal, Bharati Mukherjee, Kamla Markandaya, Manju Kapoor and many others have depicted females who are not silent sufferers but have learnt to fight against injustice and humiliation.

Anita Desai likes to reach the depth of human psyche. Anita Desai discards the traditional, worn out eternal realism and dives deep into the minds of her protagonists to examine the values and principles that they live by. Even when she probes man’s relationship with his socials milieu, her stress falls on her characters’ private instincts and intuitions, feelings and emotions. All her characters are shown on one hand struggling with the changed realities of Indian life. In their neurotic condition they fail to adjust themselves to the harsh realities of life and they react aggressively and sometimes they don’t react and agree to strike a compromise with their situation after getting no other way. But both situations cause psychological disturbance and this is the case with Anita Desai’s protagonists.

Anita Desai's novels catch the shattered psyche of the individuals who are striving for defining themselves in the form of identity in the familial and social set-up but it is hard to say that all the characters are strong enough to survive after dealing with the cruelties of life. Apart from a few, they become the victims of their personal and social affairs of life. It may be observed that almost all the protagonists of Anita Desai are sensitive or hypersensitive that makes them victims. On the other hand, some characters try hard to cope with the abnormalities of life but in the long run they also surrender yet they are able to survive. Through a brief study of the selected novels of Anita Desai, this paper will try to examine who are the victims and who are the survivors?
