This study aims to prove empirically whether the earnings quality and the level of financial statement manipulation have an effect on the company market value. The study used sample of 3 years from 2017 to 2019. Using the multiple linear regression method, it was found that the quality of earnings has a negative effect on the market value of the company and is contrary to previous theory and research. Meanwhile, the level of financial statement manipulation has no effect on the company's market value. These results indicate that the quality of earnings and the degree of manipulation of financial statements are not the main information used by capital market players in determining their investment choices. Capital market players prefer other methods of analysis in determining their investment options.

Financial statement fraud is a serious and constructive problem for external parties of the company, especially for investors. This study aims at factors that cause false financial statements with variables as moderating variables. The factors used in this study are pentagon fraud theory which consists of variables of pressure, opportunity, rationalization, competence, and arrogance. This study uses the company in the Indonesia Stock Exchange 2016-2017 period as a research sample. Based on the results of purposive sampling obtained 204 data manufacturing companies that meet the sample. Testing the hypothesis in this study was carried out using logistic regression analysis. The results of testing the hypothesis to see the effect on fraudulent financial statements indicate that competence has a significant positive effect, pressure has a negative effect, the opportunity has no significant effect, rationalization has no significant effect, arrogance has no significant effect. In the moderating variable earnings, quality cannot weaken the influence of pressure, opportunity, rationalization, and arrogance on fraudulent financial statements, but earnings quality can weaken the influence of competence on fraudulent financial statements. Simultaneous testing shows that the overall variable has a significant effect on fraudulent financial statements.

PurposeThis study examines how lenders modify their behavior and their use of traditional, transaction-based lending models in credit decisions when faced with low earnings quality.Design/methodology/approachTo measure the earnings quality, following Bharath, Sunder and Sunder (2008), the authors use three measures of accrual quality and combine them into a simple parsimonious measure of accrual quality. Subsequently, the authors apply the incremental R-square approach used by Kim and Kross (2005) to determine the degree to which lenders modify their reliance on financial statement ratios when faced with low accrual quality.FindingsConsistent with prior literature, this study shows that the cost of debt is higher when accrual quality is low. In addition, this study extends prior literature by showing that lenders decrease their reliance on income statement data to make credit decisions as accrual quality decreases.Originality/valueThis paper broadens existing literature on the pricing of information risk in capital markets by being the first to show that lenders modify their reliance on financial statement data when faced with low-quality accruals. In addition, this paper extends the findings of Billings and Morton (2002) and demonstrates to managers the futility of using accrual manipulations to obtain more favorable credit terms. Lastly, this paper aids regulators and standard setters who seek to improve the usefulness of financial statements by showing that creditors do not appear to be misled by reporting choices that lower the quality of accruals.

The process for providing accounting information to the public has not changed much in the last century even though the extent of disclosure has increased signifi-cantly. Sundem et al. (1996) suggest that the primary benefit of audited financial statements may not be decision usefulness but the discipline imposed by timely confirmation of previously available information. In general, the value of information from the audited financial statement will decline as the audit report lag (the time period between a company's fiscal year end and the date of the audit report) increases since competitively oriented users may obtain substitute sources of information. Furthermore, the literature on earnings quality and earnings management suggests that unexpected reporting delays may be associated with lower quality information. The purpose of this paper is to extend our understanding about the determinants of audit report lag using a proprietary database containing 226 audit engagements from an international public accounting firm. We examine three previously uninvestigated audit firm factors that potentially influence audit report lag and are controllable by the auditor: (1) incremental audit effort (e.g., hours), (2) the resource allocation of audit team effort measured by rank (partner, manager, or staff), and (3) the provision of nonaudit services (MAS and tax). The results indicate that incremental audit effort, the presence of contentious tax issues, and the use of less experienced audit staff are positively correlated with audit report lag. Further, audit report lag is decreased by the potential synergistic relationship between MAS and audit services.

Abstract IFRS 17 Insurance Contracts is a new accounting standard currently expected to come into force on 1 January 2023. It supersedes IFRS 4 Insurance Contracts. IFRS 17 establishes key principles that entities must apply in all aspects of the accounting of insurance contracts. In doing so, the Standard aims to increase the usefulness, comparability, transparency and quality of financial statements. A fundamental concept introduced by IFRS 17 is the contractual service margin (CSM). This represents the unearned profit that an entity expects to earn as it provides services. However, as a principles-based standard, IFRS 17 results in entities having to apply significant judgement when determining the inputs, assumptions and techniques it uses to determine the CSM at each reporting period. In general, the Standard resolves broad categories of mismatches which arise under IFRS 4. Notable examples include mismatches between assets recorded at current market value and liabilities calculated using fixed discount rates as well as inconsistencies in the timing of profit recognition over the duration of an insurance contract. However, there are requirements of IFRS 17 that may create economic or accounting mismatches of its own. For example, new mismatches could arise between the measurement of underlying contracts and the corresponding reinsurance held. Additionally, mismatches can still arise between the measurement of liabilities and the assets that support the liabilities. This paper explores the technical, operational and commercial issues that arise across these and other areas focusing on the CSM. As a standard that is still very much in its infancy, and for which wider consensus on topics is yet to be achieved, this paper aims to provide readers with a deeper understanding of the issues and opportunities that accompany it.
