Changes of knowledge of the fauna volume: species discovery curve in case of silken-fungus beetles of the Carpathians

The approach to the analysis of the fauna composition and completeness of its detection through the concept of “species discovery curve” is considered. Beetles of the family Cryptophagidae were taken as a model group. The dynamics of the accumulation of the information about the composition and volume of the Cryptophagidae fauna of the Ukrainian Carpathians during the eight stages of their study (the middle XIX, late XIX and the end of XIX century, the beginning of the XX century, the period until 1930–1940; middle and second half of XX century, and the current state for 1999 and 2021) are presented. In general, the composition of the cryptophagid fauna in the Ukrainian Carpathians is estimated at 116 species. This is 16 % more compared to what was known 100 years ago, i.e. each stage of the study adds about 5 % to the known species richness of this group of beetles. The components of fauna changes are analysed separately: 1) due to the changes in the nomenclature of existing species, 2) as a result of finding rare species (i.e. strengthening research efforts), 3) due to division or vice versa – combining existing species into two or three “small” species that were previously considered as morphs, varieties, or were not distinguished.

Borboletas estão entre os artrópodes melhor estudados, pois participam de diversas interações ecológicas. Apesar de já existirem muitos inventários de borboletas publicados no Brasil, nenhuma informação ainda existe em Mato Grosso do Sul. O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a riqueza de espécies de borboletas encontradas em um remanescente urbano de cerrado em Campo Grande, Centro-Oeste do Brasil, além de indicar a presença de espécies raras e indicadora de ambiente preservado. Foram registradas 62 espécies de borboletas, pertencentes a seis famílias e 15 subfamílias. Entre as espécies registradas, 28 pertencem à família Nymphalidae (45,1%), 16 a Hesperiidae (25,8%), oito a Lycaenidae (12,9%), seis a Pieridae (9,7%) e quatro para Riodinidae (6,5%). As estimativas de riqueza Jack-Knife (de 1ª ordem) e Chao2 mostram que entre 81 e 86% das espécies, respectivamente, foram registradas durante o período do estudo para a área. A lepidopterofauna encontrada não apresenta espécies cuja presença indica ambiente preservado. Embora a área de estudo seja pequena, estando imersa em uma matriz urbana e sendo constantemente impactada, a reserva representa um ambiente importante para a conservação de borboletas na cidade de Campo Grande. Butterflies Species (Lepidoptera) in an Urban fragment of Savannah in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Abstract. Butterflies are among the better studied arthropods, because they participate in several ecological interactions. In spite of already many inventories of butterflies have been published in Brazil, still any information exist in Mato Grosso do Sul. The present study aimed to evaluate the species richness of butterflies found in an urban remnant of savannah in Campo Grande, Midwest of Brazil, besides indicating the presence of rare species and indicative of preserved atmosphere. We registered 62 species of butterflies, ranging in six families and 15 subfamilies, for the area. Among the registered species, 28 belong to the family Nymphalidae (45.1%), 16 to Hesperiidae (25.8%), 8 to Lycaenidae (12.9%), 6 to Pieridae (9.7%) and 4 to Riodinidae (6.5 %). The wealth estimates Jack-Knife (1st order) and Chao2 show that among 81 and 86% of species, respectively, were registered during the period of the study for the area. The found lepidopterofauna didn’t present species whose presence indicates preserved atmosphere. Although the small study area, being immersed in an urban matrix and constantly being impacted, the reserve represents an important environment for the conservation of butterflies in the city of Campo Grande.

Three rare species of discomycetes in the family Hyaloscyphaceae are reported from Central Russia (Oryol and Bryansk Regions). Proliferodiscus tricolor is recorded for the first time in Russia. Comments are made on Aeruginoscyphus sericeus and Eriopezia caesia previously reported only from Moscow Region and North Caucasus respectively.

AbstractAlpine grasslands in the Southern Carpathian Mts, Romania, harbour an extraordinarily high diversity of plants and invertebrates, including Carpathic endemics. In the past decades, intensive sheep grazing has caused a dramatic decrease in biodiversity and even led to eroded soils at many places in the Carpathians. Because of limited food resources, sheep are increasingly forced to graze on steep slopes, which were formerly not grazed by livestock and are considered as local biodiversity hotspots. We examined species richness, abundance and number of endemic vascular plants and terrestrial gastropods on steep slopes that were either grazed by sheep or ungrazed by livestock in two areas of the Southern Carpathians. On calcareous soils in the Bucegi Mts, a total of 177 vascular plant and 19 gastropod species were recorded. Twelve plant species (6.8%) and three gastropod species (15.8%) were endemic to the Carpathians. Grazed sites had lower plant and gastropod species richness than ungrazed sites. Furthermore, grazed sites harboured fewer gastropod species endemic to the Carpathians than ungrazed sites. On acid soils in the Fagaras Mts, a total of 96 vascular plant and nine gastropod species were found. In this mountain area, however, grazed and ungrazed sites did not differ in species richness, abundance and number of endemic plant and gastropod species. Our findings confirm the high biodiversity of grasslands on steep slopes in the Southern Carpathian Mts and caution against increasing grazing pressure in these refuges for relic plants and gastropods as well as for other invertebrates.

The materials of year-round bird counts conducted by the authors in Omsk from September 2006 to Au-gust 2009 in nine habitats, as well as on the territory of four municipal districts of the Omsk Province from June 1 to August 10, 2020 have been analyzed. The species richness was studied, the analysis of the species numbers and distribution was carried out, and the abundance of Motacillidae on the territory of the studied administrative districts is indicated. Species sketches are given, in the compilation of which special attention is paid to the nature and duration of stay, as well as the distribution of birds by habitat. It was found that the encountered representatives of this family inhabit all studied biotopes, but some spe-cies are not evenly distributed.

The last decade has seen an explosion of the family of framework materials and their study, both from the experimental and computational point of view. We propose here a short highlight of the current state of methodologies for modelling framework materials at multiple scales, putting together a brief review of new methods and recent endeavours in this area, as well as outlining some of the open challenges in this field. We will detail advances in atomistic simulation methods, the development of materials databases, and the growing use of machine learning for properties prediction.

Leptomaria antipodensis and Leptomaria hickmanae are described from the Upper Cretaceous [Maastrichtian] Lopez de Bertodano Formation, Seymour Island, and represent the first Mesozoic records of the family Pleurotomariidae from Antarctica. Leptomaria stillwelli, L. seymourensis, Conotomaria sobralensis and C. bayeri, from the Paleocene [Danian], Sobral Formation, Seymour Island, are described as new. Leptomaria larseniana (Wilckens, 1911) new combination, also from the Sobral Formation, is redescribed based on better-preserved material. The limited diversity of the pleurotomariid fauna of Seymour Island is more similar to that of the Late Cretaceous faunas of Australia and New Zealand in terms of the number of genera and species, than to the older, more diverse faunas of South America, southern India, or northwestern Madagascar, supporting the status of the Weddelian Province as a distinct biogeographic unit. The increase in the species richness of this fauna during the Danian may be due to the final fragmentation of Gondwana during this period.

Knowledge about how species richness varies along spatial and environmental gradients is important for the conservation and use of biodiversity. The Ericaceae is a major component of alpine and subalpine vegetation globally. However, little is known about the spatial pattern of species richness and the factors that drive that richness in Ericaceae. We investigated variation in species richness of Ericaceae along an elevational gradient in Yunnan, China, and used a variation partitioning analysis based on redundancy analysis ordination to examine how those changes might be influenced by the mid-domain effect, the species-area relationship, and climatic variables. Species richness varied significantly with elevation, peaking in the upper third of the elevational gradient. Of the factors examined, climate explained a larger proportion of the variance in species richness along the elevational gradient than either land area or geometric constraints. Species richness showed a unimodal relationship with mean annual temperature and mean annual precipitation. The elevational pattern of species richness for Ericaceae was shaped by the combined effects of climate and competition. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of the potential effects of climate change on species richness for Ericaceae.
