Purpose The purpose of this study is to assess the contributions of graduate research to social innovation and change for learning and improved transdisciplinary practice. Universities, as centers of teaching and research, face high demand from society to address urgent social and environmental challenges. Faculty and students are keen to use their research to contribute to social innovation and sustainable development. As part of the effort to increase societal impact, research approaches are evolving to be more problem-oriented, engaged and transdisciplinary. Therefore, new approaches to research evaluation are also needed to learn whether and how research contributes to social innovation, and those lessons need to be applied by universities to train and support students to do impactful research and foster an impact culture. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses a theory-based evaluation method to assess the contributions of three completed doctoral research projects. Each study documents the project’s theory of change (ToC) and uses qualitative data (document review, surveys and interviews) to test the ToC. This paper uses a transdisciplinary research (TDR) quality assessment framework (QAF) to analyze each projects’ design and implementation. This paper then draws lessons from the individual case studies and a comparative analysis of the three cases on, namely, effective research design and implementation for social transformation; and training and support for impactful research. Findings Each project aimed to influence government policy, organizational practice, other research and/or the students’ own professional development. All contributed to many of their intended outcomes, but with varying levels of accomplishment. Projects that were more transdisciplinary had more pronounced outcomes. Process contributions (e.g. capacity-building, relationship-building and empowerment) were as or more important than knowledge contributions. The key recommendations are for: researchers to design intentional research, with an explicit ToC; higher education institutions (HEI) to provide training and support for TDR theory and practice; and HEIs to give more attention to research evaluation. Originality/value This is the first application of both the outcome evaluation method and the TDR QAF to graduate student research projects, and one of very few such analyses of research projects. It offers a broader framework for conceptualizing and evaluating research contributions to social change processes. It is intended to stimulate new thinking about research aims, approaches and achievements.

Abstract This paper reports the results of an international comparative study conducted in Switzerland and Japan of an elementary school mathematics lesson. The principal aim of the study was to advance understanding of the cultural specificities of a mathematics lesson in its totality using concrete examples of lesson design and implementation and of how cultural factors within and beyond the classroom/school shape and produce mathematics lessons in a particular country. We analysed two Grade 4 mathematics lessons designed and implemented in Switzerland and Japan by pre-service teachers in the context of a project-based international exchange programme. The lesson, initially designed collaboratively by the pre-service teachers of the two countries, was ultimately realised in different ways in each country. Specifically, we found differences between the Japanese and Swiss lessons in the structure of the lesson and validation of solutions. To elucidate these differences and identify the cultural factors that yield them, we analysed the resources developed and used during lesson design and implementation (lesson plans, official documents, and textbooks). Furthermore, we discuss three aspects of mathematics lessons that account for the main characteristics of each lesson: collective or individualistic teaching and learning, problem-solving lessons, and distance between theory and practice.

Static type systems are fundamental tools used to determine properties of programs before execution. There exist several techniques for validation and verification of programs based on typing. Thus, type systems are important to know for the practicioner. When designing and implementing a technique based on typing systems, there is usually a gap between the formal tools used to specify it, and the actual implementations. This gap can be an obstacle for language designers and programmers. A better understanding of the features of a type system and how they are implemented can help enourmously to the good design and implementation of new and powerful verification methods based on type systems. This chapter addresses the problem of specifying and implementing a static type system for a simple language, but containing many of the subtleties found in bigger, mainstream languages. This contributes to the understanding of the techniques, thus bridging the gap between theory and practice. Additionally, the chapter contains a small survey of some of the existing developments in the static typing area and the static analysis based on typing.

Production scheduling and control under uncertainty is among the most persistent challenges in the field of operation management. Despite the significant amount of research in this domain, many studies still underline the gap between scheduling theory and practice. In this paper, we outline the important aspects to consider in the design and implementation of decision support systems for the scheduling task by reviewing the literature. From the identified guidelines, we examine a practical case and propose a decision support system for the production scheduling task in an actual manufacturing environment.

An important breakthrough in Object-Oriented area is to raise the conception of design pattern, which was not born long before, but soon becomes a bright star due to its particular advantage in the design and development. In this paper, we analyze the support of UML to design pattern, and accomplish the modeling method based on the role design pattern. Under the direction of design pattern, to bring the design pattern into the development of practical training system, which interprets the development process of the software in both theory and practice.

This chapter sets out a hierarchical and differentiated model of social marketing principles, concepts, and techniques, based on thoughts put forward by French and Russell-Bennett (2015). In this chapter descriptive criteria of social marketing are reviewed and placed in a hierarchy of importance in order to assist practitioners, commissioners, and academics with describing and identifying social marketing practice and distinguishing it from other forms of social programme design and implementation. The description of the key principles, concepts, and techniques of social marketing set out in this chapter represents a way to conceptualize and recognize the different elements that constitute social marketing theory and practice.

This paper aims to set the stage with an outline of the conceptual, analytical and theoretical aspects of water institutional reforms and a synthesis of the main findings from the reform experiences of six countries: Australia, Chile, Morocco, Namibia, South Africa and Sri Lanka. Utilizing the latest developments in the literature on the subject, this paper presents the analytics of unbundling water institutions to show their endogenous and exogenous linkages, the transaction cost approach as a diagnostic framework for understanding the role of factors affecting water institutions, and a stage-based perspective to provide insights into the internal mechanics and dynamics evident in the process of water institutional change. Using this analytical framework and theoretical approach, this paper also identifies a few practically relevant principles for reform design and implementation. Based on a review of country reform experiences, the paper also synthesizes reform theories with actual practices by providing anecdotal evidence for various theoretical postulates and practical reform principles.

The article highlights building prerequisites that help to tackle problems related to the insufficient government communications and poor information provided to potential audiences in participatory democracies. The analysis has shown that many counties face the lack of strategic communications (both horizontal and vertical) and thus, create concerns about misunderstanding and bottlenecks in design and implementation of public policies. This problem expands when countries undergo rapid, systemic, fundamental changes, in particular due to the energy transition. Ukraine is not an exemption. Lack of real competition between MPA programs, pre-service and in-service training programs for public servants in Ukraine and poor quality of programs leave a niche for educational institutions to take the leading position. Hence, Kyiv Mohyla School of Governance (hereinafter – KMSGov) launched very specific and need oriented MPA program in Government Communications. The program was designed in close cooperation with Ukrainian public authorities and become client oriented. The program is innovative and one of a kind due to its integrity and consistency. It is student-centered and widely uses case studies, simulations and PBL techniques. In addition, the program consists of logically interconnected courses, which complement each other and provide broad pattern of particularities of evidence-based public policy design and implementation, public administration and management theory and practice, modern features of government communications and policy advocacy. Due to COVID restrictions and worldwide lockdown the Government Communication MPA program provided by KMSGov was fully transferred into on-line format without losing its quality. It became possible due modern information and communication technologies (tested in February-July 2020). The paper provides brief overview and main results of the analysis of the existing MPA programs and key particularities of the newly launched program.
