Analysis of marriage intentions and sexual experiences of young women are necessary in drawing up state-level and countrywide policies that address young women’s sexual health needs. This paper draws on results of a study utilizing structured questionnaires and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) to examine marriage and sexual debut among young girls in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State. A total of 862 questionnaires were administered among young women within the age of 11 and 25 years. The information from the questionnaire was analysed using the Chi-square (X2) test to assess bivariate association between ever had sex and age at first sex and some socio-demographic characteristics of young girls. The study hypothesised that ever had sex, age at first sexual encounter and age at marriage do not differ by some sociodemographic characteristics of women. The results of the analysis revealed that the majority (70%) of the respondents have ever had sex and that 9.6% have ever married. The X2 test revealed that there are significant relationships between ever had sex and age of respondents (X2, df=4, p=0.001)), marital status (X2, df=4, p=0.001) and level of education (X2, df=6, p=0.001). There was, however, no statistical differences between ever had sex and religion and residence. The paper recommended a multifaceted programme to address the needs of young girls in Kachia LGA.

Jane Austen was one of Dibdin’s greatest admirers and his songs feature prominently in her music collection. Yet the Dibdin songs she owned, with their bawdy comedy, political and social satire, and martial, masculine themes, were far removed from the musical diet prescribed for young ladies of Austen’s rank by conduct writers. Indeed, they were quite different from those advocated by Dibdin himself in his tract on the musical education of young girls, the Musical Mentor (1808), which suggested songs on ‘Constancy’, ‘A Portrait of Innocence’, or ‘Vanity Reproved’ as more suitable subject matter. By highlighting the contrasts between contemporary expectations of female performance and the contents of Austen’s collection, this interlude presents domestic musical performance less as an instrument of control and more as a means by which women could express themselves and participate in the world beyond the bounds of home, family, and conduct-book femininity.

Largely forgotten today, from approximately the late 1910s through the 1930s, at least a dozen young girls brought out numerous books in the US. But there was one girl who was particularly talented and successful: Nathalia Crane, who published her first collection of poetry when she was just eleven years old in 1924. This article analyzes both her work and her reception from her first success through the subsequent controversy over her authorship instigated by a local Brooklyn newspaper. In the process, the article demonstrates the complicated connections between perceptions of girlhood and women's sexuality as they relate to political agency in the early twentieth-century United States.
