scholarly journals Mobile Research Methods: Possibilities and Issues of a New Promising Way of Conducting Research

Based on personal accounts of their experiences conducting qualitative and quantitative research in the countries of the Middle East and North Africa, the contributors to this volume share the real-life obstacles they have encountered in applying research methods in practice and the possible solutions to overcome them. The volume is an important companion book to more standard methods books, which focus on the “how to” of methods but are often devoid of any real discussion of the practicalities, challenges, and common mistakes of fieldwork. The volume is divided into three parts, highlighting the challenges of (1) specific contexts, including conducting research in areas of violence; (2) a range of research methods, including interviewing, process-tracing, ethnography, experimental research, and the use of online media; and (3) the ethics of field research. In sharing their lessons learned, the contributors raise issues of concern to both junior and experienced researchers, particularly those of the Global South but also to those researching the Global North.

According to international labor standards, the labor-management system covers all public administration bodies responsible for and/or involved in labor-management, whether they are ministerial departments or government agencies, including semipublic, regional, or local agencies, or any other form of decentralized administration, and any institutional framework for coordinating the activities of such bodies and for consultation and participation of employers and employees and their organization. In this regard, dispute resolution mechanisms through administrative departments and agencies, labor inspections, and voluntary compliance are most pronounced. The purpose of the study was to conduct a comprehensive analysis of administrative mechanisms for resolving individual labor disputes in foreign countries; to draw conclusions about the effectiveness, prospects, and legal clarity of coordination of labor disputes. When conducting research the author relies on foreign doctrine, the practice of the subjects involved in labor relations, acts of foreign legislation. Research methods: a dialectical approach to the knowledge of administrative mechanisms, allowing analyzing them in their practical development and functioning in the context of coordination of labor legal relations. The comparative legal method and dialectics determined the choice of specific research methods: comparative and formal-legal. The functions, jurisdiction, and procedures of individual labor dispute resolution mechanisms and labor inspectorates are the subject of comprehensive research because of their effectiveness in protecting workers’ rights. The article provides a detailed comparative legal analysis of the specifics of dispute resolution through administrative departments and agencies, the role of labor inspections/law enforcement, and access to justice for workers in unclear or hidden employment relationships. On the basis of a large array of regulative sources, the author concludes about the importance of administrative mechanisms in the proper enforcement of labor laws abroad.

Abstract— Researchers want to find out how people with disabilities understand the content of news on television broadcasts, specifically decoding nonverbal communication on news broadcasts. Basically the communication process (message exchange) will not run well if it is not supported by various communication elements or components, namely encoding. Therefore, in communicating there are so many obstacles and constraints experienced by communication agents. Physical barriers become one of the obstacles in communication. When communicating, one's physical imperfections become a problem in the delivery and reception of messages (information). In this study, researchers used qualitative research methods and interpretive paradigms to get accurate results. After conducting research on persons with hearing impairments, the researcher saw that the resource persons could not encode or decode perfectly, the resource persons were only able to absorb a little information that was conveyed. The resource person is not able to make messages according to a certain code the cause is the unclear tempo of the sign language column movement that is too fast so the resource person is unable to capture the message conveyed by the interpreter. Keywords—: News; Communication; Encoding; Decoding; Deaf.

We review Valery Chirkov’s “Fundamentals of research on culture and psychology: Theory and methods.” The book is written as a textbook, but clearly takes a position that work in culture and psychology should be “problem-oriented, realist, and case-based” (p. 299). It is an innovative piece that covers philosophical paradigms, planning research, and conducting research. Our review outlines main claims made by the book that are likely provocative to mainstream variable-based research and ones that will likely challenge cultural psychologists. Despite the provocations, we argue that the book is an excellent place to start because, as illustrated through the work of Charles Taylor, Chirkov insinuates generative conversations about moral goods. A complimentary discussion through the purview Slavoj Žižec shows how Chirkov promotes awareness of a potential fetish with research methods that are counter productive and unethical.

This article reports on the first stage of a study that uses Young People as Researchers methodology to investigate the phenomenon of middle-year student disengagement. The study obtains student perspectives on the meanings of engagement and disengagement using a variety of innovative research methods. The first stage of the study focused on a two-day workshop giving students and teachers an overview of the project and providing training and experience in conducting research in their schools. The process employed by the study provides spaces and resources for critical thinking and encourages imaginative responses to the real life problems confronting the students and their peers and affecting their educational engagement. This article describes ways in which engagement is viewed both theoretically and through the empirical work of the student researchers, and how various applications of ‘disciplined imagination’ connect with methods of investigating and understanding engagement.

As research on family business continues to grow, six key trends have become evident. These trends include a continuing pursuit of a few research topics such as succession, a strong preference for practice-oriented research methods, a tendency to borrow heavily from other disciplines without giving back to these fields, and a strong preference to talk to other researchers conducting research on family firms—failing to communicate with scholars from other disciplines. Therefore, we suggest strategies to expedite the growth of family business research toward better understanding the paradoxes faced by family business managers, deepen insights into the problems they encounter, improve rigor in reported research, find ways to promote a dialog with scholars in sister disciplines, and give back to the disciplines from which we borrow heavily.
