Two dogs that had ingested foreign bodies were presented with vomiting. The foreign bodies appeared as metal and dense on abdominal radiographs. Abdominal exploratory identified intestinal perforation in one case and gastrointestinal tissue trapped between the two foreign bodies adhered to each other in the second case. The foreign bodies were identified as magnets in one case and magnets and other metallic foreign bodies in the second case. Both dogs had excellent outcomes following surgical intervention. These cases demonstrate the danger of tissue entrapment between the foreign bodies as a result of the magnetic attraction between two objects. Dogs that are presented with a history of or are suspect for ingesting multiple magnets or a magnet and metal foreign bodies should be treated with surgical intervention because of the risk of gastrointestinal perforation as a result of magnetic attraction between the foreign bodies.

Neutropenic enterocolitis is a syndrome characterized by fever and abdominal pain in a neutropenic patient. It is often reported in children treated for leukemia and rarely reported in patients with other diseases. Herein, we report the case of a 9-year-old patient with a medical history of recurrent fever and mouth ulcers since the age of 4, who presented with neutropenic enterocolitis complicated with intestinal perforation which all leaded to disclose cyclic neutropenia. The patient was successfully treated by aggressive supportive care combined with surgical intervention. Neutropenic enterocolitis with possible complications should be considered and promptly managed in every neutropenic patient and may reveal a rare cause of neutropenia as cyclic neutropenia.

We present two cases of self-inflicted urethrovesical foreign body in children. Case 1 was a 6-year-old girl admitted with a history of self-introduction of a pin. The X-ray revealed the pin as 3.5 cm in length and in the bladder. The foreign body was removed endoscopically. Case 2 was a 13-year-old boy with a self-introduced packing needle, 13 cm in length, partially in the urethra. The end and the tip of the needle passed through the urethra to the surrounding tissues. Foreign body removed via a little skin incision with endoscopic guidance. Foreign bodies are rarely found in the lower urinary tract of children. Definitive treatment is usually the endoscopic removal; however, sometimes surgical intervention may require.

We present the case of a 20 year old female patient who presented following ingestion of multiple button magnets. She remained clinically well however serial abdominal radiographs demonstrated the magnets were not passing through the gastrointestinal tract and a CT was therefore performed for further assessment and to aid surgical planning. Artefact from the magnets made interpretation of the CT challenging. The use of a Metal Artefact Reduction (MAR) algorithm however enabled accurate localisation of the magnets thus guiding subsequent surgical intervention. Whilst MAR algorithms are usually used in the assessment of iatrogenic metallic devices (e.g., joint prostheses), this case demonstrates an example of their potential wider use.

Accidental multiple magnetic foreign body ingestion although common in children is rare in adults. Multiple magnetic foreign body ingestion possess a definitive risk of causing intestinal perforation, volvulus or fistulas and requires early surgical intervention even in apparently asymptomatic individuals to prevent catastrophic complications. We report a case of an 18 year old male with a history of accidental simultaneous ingestion of two semi-circular shaped magnets along with a nail. The peculiarity of the case being that despite the magnets being simultaneously ingested, one was in the stomach and the other in the jejunum adhered to each other through the transverse colon mesentery causing pressure necrosis of the adjoining wall with the patient being asymptomatic.

Perianal foreign bodies are a surgical challenge. The management of these patients requires a systematic approach which includes a careful history and examination, appropriate radiological investigations and surgical intervention. Here authors present a case of a five years old female with alleged history of fall over a bell with perianal and rectal injury.

Accidental foreign body ingestion is a common problem encountered in Emergency. Deliberate foreign body ingestion may result due to an act of insanity or an act of daring. A shaman locally known as Dhami was brought to Emergency with the history of ingestion of bell clappers. He denied the history of psychiatric illness or substance abuse. On physical examination, there were signs of peritonitis. Laparotomy was done to remove the foreign bodies. Post-operative period was uneventful. Apart from the surgical intervention, psychological counselling was given to him. This is a rare interesting case due to the fact that the 15 cm long foreign bodies passing all the way through without significant injury and finally causing obstruction in ileocecal junction and perforation in the distal ileum.

A 2-year-old, male, mixed-breed dog presented with a 12-day history of vomiting, depression, and weight loss after ingestion of industrial-strength wood glue containing diphenylmethane diisocyanate as its active ingredient. A diagnosis of gastric foreign body was made from survey abdominal radiographs. A large aggregate of solidified wood glue was surgically removed, and the dog recovered uneventfully. Fourteen other cases have been reported to the Animal Poison Control Center at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Eight of those 14 cases required surgical intervention. All cases recovered completely.

Magnets are unusual gastrointestinal foreign bodies. Ingestion of multiple magnets may lead to serious complications including bowel perforation. Presenting the case of an 11-year-old girl who ingested 2 singing magnets. The patient presented with a history of pain abdomen and bilious vomiting and constipation of one day duration, 20 days after ingestion of the magnets. On examination there was distension of abdomen and severe tenderness all over the abdomen along with rigidity. Abdominal radiograph showed the presence of foreign bodies in the abdomen. In view of features of peritonitis, the patient was taken up for an exploratory laparotomy. Intraoperatively two perforations were found, one in the jejunum and the other in the ileum. The perforations were caused due to the pressure necrosis caused by the presence of magnets in different loops of the bowel. The perforations were closed. Post-operative period was uneventful. In conclusion, it is important to be aware of the problems that can be caused in cases of multiple magnet ingestion and to intervene at the earliest to prevent further complications.

Abstract Background Hydronephrosis (HN) is the most common abnormality detected on prenatal ultrasound. This study sought to stratify outcomes of patients by severity of prenatal HN with postnatal outcomes. Methods This was a retrospective review of patients referred to a tertiary care fetal-maternal clinic with diagnosis of prenatal HN from 2004 to 2019. HN severity was categorized as mild, moderate, or severe. Data were analyzed to determine the association between HN severity and surgical intervention. Decision for surgery was based on factors including history of multiple urinary tract infections, evidence of renal scarring, and/or reduced renal function. Surgery-free survival time was represented by the Kaplan–Meier method, and hazard ratios were calculated using the log-rank test. Results 131 kidneys among 101 infants were prenatally diagnosed with hydronephrosis; 35.9% had mild HN, 29.0% had moderate HN, and 35.1% had severe HN. 8.5% of patients with mild HN, 26.3% of patients with moderate HN, and 65.2% of patients with severe HN required surgery. Patients with severe HN were 12.2 (95% CI 6.1–24.4; p < 0.001) times more likely to undergo surgery for HN than patients with mild HN and 2.9 (95% CI 1.5–5.3; p = 0.003) times more likely to undergo surgery than patients with moderate HN. Patients with moderate HN were 4.3 times more likely to require surgery than patients with mild HN (95% CI 1.5–12.9; p = 0.01). Median age at surgery was 11.8 months among patients with mild HN (IQR 11.7–14.1 months), 6.6 months among patients with moderate HN (IQR 4.2–16.4 months), and 5.4 months among patients with severe HN (3.7–12.4 months). Conclusion Among this cohort of referrals from a fetal-maternal clinic, severity of HN correlated with increased likelihood of surgical intervention. Continued assessment of patients with prenatal HN should be evaluated to best determine the role of the pediatric urologist in cases of prenatal HN.

Airway foreign bodies are a leading cause of death among children and require urgent recognition by medical personnel. While most cases are diagnosed readily from a clinical history of acute respiratory distress, some cases remain more indolent and present later. We report the case of a 7-year-old boy who aspirated a “LEGO” toy and presented with a week history of increasing respiratory distress compatible with known asthma. Despite a normal chest X-ray, a low-dose computed tomography showed the presence of a foreign body in the left main bronchus, which was subsequently removed by fiberoptic bronchoscopy. Our case serves to reemphasize the importance of considering airway foreign bodies as a cause of respiratory distress, especially in young children.
