A 6-year-old, neutered male, mixed-breed dog was presented for a chronic draining tract and cough. A contrast fistulogram demonstrated a cutaneopulmonary fistula. Excision of the fistulous tract retrieved a migrating foreign body (i.e., a toothpick) within the tract. Clinical signs resolved 2 weeks following surgery. Foreign body migration is a common problem seen in dogs, resulting in many different clinical syndromes. Definitive surgery depends upon complete removal of the foreign body and the diseased tissue. Sinography is an inexpensive, readily available diagnostic tool that can help define a draining tract and confirm a foreign body.

AbstractA 12 year old male Fox Terrier (case 1) and a one year old female Poodle (case 2) were presented with a history of dysorexia and vomiting, and case 2 also with distress associated with eating. Both dogs were diagnosed with acute pancreatitis based on clinical signs, blood analysis and ultrasonography which revealed the presence of a vegetable foreign body in the proximity of the pancreatic right lobe. Laparatomy enabled the gramineae awns to be removed which led to full resolution of clinical signs. We believe that these are the first reported cases of acute pancreatitis due to grass awns.

ABSTRACT: This report described clinical, epidemiological, and pathological aspects of ischemic myelopathy caused by fibrocartilaginous embolism (FCE) in a 10-year-old, mixed breed gelding. Clinically, the horse presented acute hind limbs paralysis, with a clinical course of approximately 24 hours. At necropsy, no gross lesions were observed. Cross-sections of the spinal cord revealed focally extensive areas of malacia from the T10 to L4 segments. Focally extensive areas of liquefactive necrosis involving the gray matter and adjacent white matter were observed on histologic sections. The lumen of multiple blood vessels in the periphery of the necrotic areas was occluded by fibrocartilaginous emboli that strongly stained with alcian blue. Clinical signs, gross necropsy, and histological findings observed in this case were identical to those described in the literature for ischemic myelopathy caused by FCE in the horse and other species.

INTRODUCTION: Injuries caused by sea urchins are the most common caused by marine animals in humans in Brazil, with the black sea urchin (Echinometra lucunter) causing the most injuries to bathers. METHODS: This study observed 314 human wounds with emphasis on the early observation of clinical signs and symptoms and their implications on the recommended treatment. RESULTS: All the injuries were caused by black sea urchins and were observed in bathers. The lesions and the pain were associated with penetration of the spines; there was no early inflammation or pain without pressure on the wounded places. Complications arising from this kind on injury, including infections and foreign body granulomas, are associated with the permanence of the spines in the wounds. CONCLUSIONS: The study confirmed that this kind of injury is the most common accident caused by aquatic animals in Brazil. The main therapeutical recommendation is early removal of the spines to prevent late complications, such as infections and the formation of foreign body granulomas.

Abstract: Patients of post therapy lung tuberculosis (TB) that still have permanent or worsened clinical signs might be caused by chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA). Diagnosis of CPA is difficult to confirmed without complete supporting tests. This study was aimed to establish whether Saint George’s Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) could be used as diagnostic tool and predictor of the occurence of CPA in post therapy lung TB patients. This was an analytical observational study with a cross sectional design. There were 72 patients who had negative Gene Xpert sputum; 34.7% with positive Aspergillus-specific IgG. Their clinical signs were evaluated with SGRQ. The results showed that there was a very significant relationship between clinical score and CPA (p<0.0001). The lower the clinical score the less the probability of CPA. In this analysis we determined the diagnosis value of clinical score with a probability cut-off point = 0.5 which led to clinical score cut-off point of 45.6 with further results, as follows: sensitivity 68.0%; specificity 95.7%; positive predictive value 89.5%; negative predictive value 84.9%; OR 47.8, and CI 95% (9,2-248,2). In conclusion, SGRQ could be used as diagnostic tool and predictor of the occurence of CPA in post therapy lung TB patients. Keywords: post therapy lung TB; chronic pulmonary aspergillosis; Saint George’s Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ)  Abstrak: Pasien TB paru pasca terapi yang masih memperlihatkan gejala klinis menetap atau bahkan memberat dapat disebabkkan oleh adanya chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA). Nilai peluang = 0,5 memberikan titik potong skor klinis = 45,6.

Veterinary toxicology is a common field in veterinary medicine, being a science closely related to other clinical and para clinical disciplines. The multitude of toxics and the ability of each organism to respond differently to them, non-specific clinical signs and an inadequate anamnesis can often put the clinician in difficulty when seeking to diagnose. The aim of the study was to highlight the incidence of pet poisoning cases, over a period of 10 years of time at the emergency clinic, faculty of Veterinary Medicine Cluj-Napoca. An epidemiological study was performed with the help of the emergency clinic archive, where the files of the intoxicated patients were selected. The data were centralized in the Microsoft Office Excel. The results obtained revealed the sum of 256 cases of pet poisoning in the last ten years (0.611% of the number of cases registered during this period), of which the predominantly affected species was the dog of mixed breed. Also, within the most common poisonings, the ones with ethylene glycol and anticoagulants rodenticides were observed. In the present study a correlation was established between breed, age, sex and the most frequent incidence of poisoning, common toxins and the connection between the periods of the year.

Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to report an unusual case of an iatrogenic foreign body within the stifle joint, removed 6 years after distal femoral fracture repair in a small dog. Acute lameness was caused by a migrating screwdriver fragment, which had been lost during initial fracture repair and which did not cause clinical signs for years until dislodged inside the joint. Case Report A male Jack Russell, 7 years of age, underwent plate and screws fixation to treat a Salter-Harris type I fracture at the age of 9 months. Seven months after surgery, partial implant removal was performed. Six years after fracture repair, the dog presented for a non-weight-bearing lameness and pain on the previously operated stifle joint, which occurred suddenly while walking on the leash. Radiographs revealed a small intra-articular metallic radiodense foreign body. Arthroscopy was used to remove the migrating broken-tip of a screwdriver from the medial aspect of the tibiofemoral joint. Retrieving the foreign body led to the immediate resolution of clinical signs without complications. Conclusion By reporting this case of a forgotten foreign body retained inside a stifle joint for 6 years, we aim to illustrate the potential risk of leaving a piece of metal inside the body. A high index of suspicion for such complications should be kept a long time after surgery. Arthroscopy was a useful first-line tool for efficiently and mini-invasively treating this unusual problem.

A 13-year-old male mixed-breed dog was examined because of hematuria and pyrexia. Ultrasonographic examination of the genitourinary tract showed the presence of a migrating grass awn in the right prostatic lobe. Laparotomy allowed, under ultrasonographic guidance, to remove entirely the migrating grass awn from the prostatic parenchyma. The recovery was uneventful and four months after the surgery the owner reported that the dog showed the complete resolution of the clinical signs and full return to normal activity. To our knowledge, this case report describes for the first time the clinical presentation, imaging findings, management and outcome for a dog with prostatic localization of a migrating grass awn.
