Abstract There has been a very large number of experimental studies of the elastic properties of amorphous polymer networks in uniaxial deformation, particularly elongation, over the past few decades. In spite of these efforts, and related theoretical investigations, major questions remain unanswered with regard to stress-strain isotherms over the range of moderate deformations. The major question in this area is the molecular basis or interpretation of the phenomenological constants 2C1 and 2C2 used to represent the experimentally observed isotherms. It is hoped that the present survey of the results of the most important of these experimental studies, particularly in regard to the effect of experimental variables on 2C1 and 2C2 will encourage additional work, leading to an unambiguous solution to this important unsolved problem in the area of rubberlike elasticity.

Interlaced scanning has been widely used as a trade-off solution between picture quality and transmission bandwidth since the invention of television. During the past decades, various interlaced-to-progressive conversion algorithms have been proposed to improve subjective quality or coding efficiency. However, almost all the researchers concentrate on general cases, without making full use of specific application scenarios. Based on extensive investigations, eliminating visual artifacts in areas of subtitles and station captions for interlaced sports and news videos is still an unsolved problem, which will be addressed in this paper. Firstly, motion estimation is performed between field pictures. Secondly, text edge detection is proposed for sports and news videos. Finally, different processing strategies are applied to text regions and non-text regions. Experimental results show that the proposed method can generate much better text content than existing algorithms. In addition, it is quite stable for non-text parts.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a practical medicine based on thousands of years of medical practice in China. Arsenic dispensing powder (ADP) has been used as a treatment for MDS patients with a superior efficacy on anemia at Xiyuan Hospital of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. In this study, we retrospectively analyzed MDS patients that received ADP treatment in the past 9 years and confirmed that ADP improves patients’ anemia and prolongs overall survival in intermediate-risk MDS patients. Then, we used the MDS transgenic mice model and cell line to explore the drug mechanism. In normal and MDS cells, ADP does not show cellular toxicity but promotes differentiation. In mouse MDS models, we observed that ADP showed significant efficacy on promoting erythropoiesis. In the BFU-E and CFU-E assays, ADP could promote erythropoiesis not only in normal clones but also in MDS clones. Mechanistically, we found that ADP could downregulate HIF1A in MDS clones through upregulation of VHL, P53 and MDM2, which is involved in two parallel pathways to downregulate HIF1A. We also confirmed that ADP upregulates GATA factors in normal clones. Thus, our clinical and experimental studies indicate that ADP is a promising drug to promote erythropoiesis in both MDS and normal clones with a superior outcome than current regular therapies. ADP promotes erythropoiesis in myelodysplastic syndromes via downregulation of HIF1A and upregulation of GATA factors.

Over the past years, two-dimensional lattices have attracted the attention of several researchers because they are lightweight compared with their full-solid counterparts, which can be used in various engineering applications. Nevertheless, since lattices are manufactured by reducing the base material, their stiffnesses then become lower. This study presents the weight efficiency of the lattices defined by relations between the elastic modulus and the weight density of the lattices. In this study, the mechanical behavior of 2D lattices is described by the in-plane elastic modulus. Experimental studies on the elastic modulus of the 2D lattices made of steel are performed. Three lattices having different unit cells, including square, body-centered, and triangular unit cells, are considered. The elastic modulus of each lattice is investigated by tensile testing. All specimens of the lattices are made of steel and manufactured by waterjet cutting. The experimental results of the elastic modulus of the lattices with the considered unit-cell patterns are validated with those obtained from finite element simulations. The results obtained in this study are also compared with the closed-form solutions founded in the literature. Moreover, the unit-cell pattern yielding the best elastic modulus for the lattice is discussed through weight efficiency.

Over the past two decades, there has been a growing interest in developing predictive models of animal movement and force generation in fluids. In a departure from past studies that have asked how prescribed motions of a propulsor (wing or fin) generate lift and thrust during swimming and flying, we are increasingly interested in predicting the propulsor's movement as well as the forces generated by it. This interest, motivated by a need to understand the control and dynamics of locomotion and its applications to robotics and animal physiology, requires that we develop integrative models and analyses of swimming and flying that incorporate neural control and muscle physiology into more traditional biomechanical studies of locomotion in fluids. This approach extends from whole-animal studies to the molecular basis of force generation. In this paper, we explore mechanical tuning from the level of the whole animal to the proteins driving force generation in muscle.

There has been a marked change in the past few years in the incidence of interest in stellar spectra. The great initial task of classification has attained its first objective—though the Henry Draper Extension, and other investigations are still progressing. Perhaps a million stars are still accessible to classification with existing instruments; but more and more time is being spent upon individual spectra, and upon theoretical investigations. In these fields progress has been very rapid, and only some of the more important results may be mentioned here.

Abstract During the past decade and a half, studies of genetic predisposition, parathyroid tumorigenesis, and molecular genetics of familial hyperparathyroid disorders have started to unveil the molecular basis of pHPT. Primary HPT is found in several distinct disorders with autosomal dominant inheritance such as in multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1), MEN2A, the HPT-jaw tumor syndrome (HPT-JT), familial isolated hyperparathyroidism (FIHPT), autosomal dominant mild hyperparathyroidism (ADMH), and neonatal severe HPT (NSHPT).

In the past 7 years JSP has evolved to become a respected sport psychology journal. The journal has been uncompromising in the strong research posture it has taken. It is currently the only journal entirely devoted to sport psychology that uses a single set of criteria for evaluating the scientific merit of submitted manuscripts. Over this time period the submitted manuscripts have shown an increase in the number of female principal authors as well as authors being affiliated with departments other than physical education. Survey studies were the most common submittals, but lately there has been a greater emphasis in field experimental studies. Some potential problem areas are noted in subject selection and choice of statistical tests. An examination of research areas revealed that in recent years "motivation" was the most frequently submitted topic. It appeared that other research areas varied in terms of their publishability. The common methodological problems associated with rejection of these types of manuscripts are discussed.
