Improved Resilience in Butyl Rubber through Chemical Modification
Abstract A new approach is presented toward obtaining improved properties in Butyl rubber vulcanizates through chemical modification of the Butyl rubber polymer by N-methyl-N,4-dinitrosoaniline. Chemical modification by this additive may be carried out in a Banbury mixer at conventional mixing times and temperatures. The use of modified polymer is advantageous in both black- and non-black-loaded stocks and is advantageous also with respect to variation over the spectrum of vulcanizing systems which are normally used with Butyl rubber. A successful plant demonstration of chemical modification has been carried out.
