Fracture Morphologies of Carbon-Black-Loaded SBR Subjected to Low-Cycle, High-Stress Fatigue

Abstract In the absence of a mechanical defect at the surface, failure is almost always initiated in the bulk of a sample at a material flaw. A variety of flaw morphologies are observed; however, the extent of cyclic damage could not be related to either flaw size or flaw type. Energy dispersive spectographic analysis did not reveal any differences in chemistry between a flaw site and regions remote from a flaw. The size and definition of a flaw increase with an increase in carbon-black loading. Initiation flaw sites are enveloped by fan-shaped or penny-shaped regions which develop during cycling. With the highly loaded carbon-black samples, these regions consist of concentric bands which increase in number and become more prominent with an increase in test temperature. This is attributed to the presence of knotty tearing. With low carbon-black loadings, the absence of any significant disorientations in the tearing paths during either a cycle or a series of cyclic events results in the absence of individual resolvable bands within the fatigue-tear regions. The size and morphology of a fatigue-tear region appears to be independent of the fatigue load or the extent of the damage (strength loss). By contrast, either an increase in cycling load or an increase in damage at constant load increases the definition of the fatigue-region morphology for all formulations of carbon black. The morphologies in regions leading to failure during the final cycle are identical to the morphologies of fractured surfaces obtained in conventional tensile tests—tear steps or ridges at low magnifications and slow crack-growth with coarse tear paths and fast crack-growth with fine tear paths at high magnifications. Morphologies typical of slow crack-growth are also seen within the banded (fatigue) regions. On the finest scale, the morphology can be described in terms of tearing of individual groups of rubber strands, collapsing to form a cell-like structure.

The present paper discusses the statistical features of static fatigue for E-glass multifilament tows in water. In such an aggressive environment, the glass fibres are sensitive to slow crack propagation from micron-sized flaws. Rupture and interrupted static fatigue tests under constant deformation in water, as well as tensile tests in inert environments on tows after fatigue were carried out on E-glass fibre tows that comprised around 2000 single filaments. The slow crack growth constants and the fast fracture statistical parameters for filaments were extracted from the outcome of experiments on tows, i.e., the load relaxation curves during fatigue and stress-strain curves during the tensile tests. These parameters provide a pertinent data base for the prediction of several characteristics in various conditions of fatigue for filaments and tows including statistical distributions of lifetimes and residual strengths, strength degradation during fatigue, size effects on lifetime and tow residual behaviour. Equations for calculation of filament lifetime and residual strength, and tow tensile behaviour were based on the model of slow crack growth and Weibull statistical distribution. Calculations using strength-probability-time relations provided insight into static fatigue behaviour of tows in water. Validity of the approach was assessed by the comparison of experimental and predicted tow residual behaviours.

ABSTRACTThe fracture properties of selected commercial composite dental restorative materials and a model composite system were studied to determine the influences of the reinforcing phase, exposure to water, and particle/polymer adhesion on crack propagation. The content of inorganic fillers ranged from 36 to 62 volume percent. In the model system the polymer phase approximated that of the commercial products, a constant size distribution of quartz fillers was used, and polymer/particle adhesion was varied. The double torsion test method was employed to measure relationships between applied stress intensity factor and velocity of crack propagation during stable crack growth. In all systems, cracks propagated through regions of high stress concentration at the low end of the velocity range studied (10−7 m/sec to 10−3 m/sec). Wet materials fractured at lower stress intensities than dry materials at all velocities. At high velocities unstable (stick-slip) growth occurred in dry materials with strong filler/matrix interfaces and in wet specimens with initially strong interfaces and less than 41 volume percent filler. In wet conditions, materials with poorly bonded fillers fractured by slow crack growth at stress intensities 10% to 30% below the levels of composites with strong interfaces.

Fatigue failure is almost considered as the predominant problem affecting automotive parts under dynamic loading condition. Thus, more understanding of crack behavior during fatigue can strongly help in finding the proper mechanism to avoid the final fracture and extent the service life of components. The main goal of this paper is to study the fracture behavior of low carbon steel which is used mostly in automotive industry. For this purpose, the fractography of samples subjected to high and low stress levels in fatigue test then was evaluated and analyzed. Hardness and tensile tests were carried out to determine the properties of used steel. Also, the samples were characterized by microstructure test and XRD analysis to examine the constitute phases. The fatigue test (S-N curve) was done at stress ratio (R= -1), and the fracture examination was perform using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results of microstructure and XRD analysis were indicating that the Ferrite and a little amount of pearlite are the dominant phases of this steel. Whereas, the fractography observations reveal that the void coalescence ductile fracture is the main failure mode in samples with high stress level, while the ductile fracture (void coalescence) with Transgranular Cleavage fracture was noticed in low stress fatigue mode for this alloy.

Silicon nitride is one of the ceramic materials being considered for the components in gas turbine engines which will be exposed to temperatures of 1000 to 1400°C. Test specimens from hot-pressed billets exhibit flexural strengths of approximately 50 MN/m2 at 1000°C. However, the strength degrades rapidly to less than 20 MN/m2 at 1400°C. The strength degradition is attributed to subcritical crack growth phenomena evidenced by a stress rate dependence of the flexural strength and the stress intensity factor. This phenomena is termed slow crack growth and is associated with the onset of plastic deformation at the crack tip. Lange attributed the subcritical crack growth tb a glassy silicate grain boundary phase which decreased in viscosity with increased temperature and permitted a form of grain boundary sliding to occur.

With the development of polymer science, more attention is being paid to the longevity of polymer products. Slow crack growth (SCG), one of the most important factors that reveal the service life of the products, has been investigated widely in the past decades. Here, we manufactured an isotactic polypropylene (iPP) sample with a novel shear layer–spherulites layer alternated structure using multiflow vibration injection molding (MFVIM). However, the effect of the alternated structure on the SCG behavior has never been reported before. Surprisingly, the results showed that the resistivity of polymer to SCG can be enhanced remarkably due to the special alternated structure. Moreover, this sample shows unique slow crack propagation behavior in contrast to the sample with the same thickness of shear layer, presenting multiple microcracks in the spherulites layer, which can explain the reason of the resistivity improvement of polymer to SCG.
