Abstract The rheological and ultimate properties of unvulcanized rubber and compounds are described. Unfilled elastomers may be represented by the theory of viscoelastic fluids. Various experimental studies are described and interpreted. Filled polymer melts exhibit more complex behavior including yield values, reduced elastic memory, and thixotropy. The influence of these properties on several processing operations including milling/mixing and extrusion is critically discussed.
