This article presents the results of a study of hybrid spring wheat populations. Revealed different patterns of inheritance of important traits in F1 hybrids, which is caused by hereditary features of the original forms and circumstances. Analysis of hybrid populations showed that the dominant role in the formation of 1000 grains mass belongs to productivity and weight of grain with an ear, correlation coefficient r = 0.90 and amounted to r = 0.73, respectively. Found that the hybrid population in F4-5, created on the basis of grades Moscow 35, Esther, Agatha, Rome, Saratovskaya 29 (Russia), Ostinka (Ukraine) are a valuable material for selection of highly productive genotypes for future use breeding process.

With the growing aridity of the climate on the Don, it became necessary to improve the methodology for conducting the  breeding of spring durum wheat. The main method of obtaining the source material remains intraspecific step hybridization. Crossings were performed between genetically distant forms, differing in origin and required traits and properties. The use of chemical mutagenesis was a productive way to change the heredity of genotypes in terms of drought tolerance. When breeding for productivity, both in dry years of research and in favorable years, the most objective markers were identified — the size of the aerial mass, the mass of grain per plant, spike, and harvest index. The magnitude of the correlation coefficients between the yield per unit area and the elements of its structure is established. It was most closely associated with them in dry years, while in wet years it decreased. Power the correlation of the characteristics of the pair - the grain yield per square meter - the aboveground biomass averaged r = 0.73, and in dry years it was higher (0.91) than in favorable ones (0.61 - 0.70) , between the harvest and the harvest index - r = 0.81 (on average). In dry years, the correlation coefficient increased to 0.92. Research data confirms the greatest importance of the mass of grain from one ear and the plant in the formation of grain yield per unit area in both dry and wet years. In dry years, the correlation coefficient between yield and grain mass per plant was on average r = 0.80; in favorable years, r = 0.69. The relationship between yield and grain mass from the ear was greater — r = 0.84 and r = 0.82, respectively. Consequently, the breeding significance of the aboveground mass and the productivity of the ear, as a criterion for the selection of the crop, especially increases in the dry years. They were basic in the selection.

Various inverse algorithms have been proposed to estimate brain electrical activities with magnetoencephalography (MEG) and electroencephalography (EEG). To validate and compare the performances of inverse algorithms, many researchers have used artificially constructed EEG and MEG datasets. When the artificial sources are reconstructed on the cortical surface, accuracy of the source estimates has been difficult to evaluate. In this paper, we suggest a new measure to evaluate the reconstructed EEG/MEG cortical sources more accurately. To validate the usefulness of the proposed method, comparison between conventional and proposed evaluation metrics was conducted using artificial cortical sources simulated under different noise conditions. The simulation results demonstrated that only the proposed method could reflect the source space geometry regardless of the number of source peaks.

The correlation between greasy wool production per unit area, obtained by clipping and measuring an area of about 100 cm² on the midside, and greasy fleece weight at shearing was about 0.58. Wool production from such an area over periods of 7½ or 3½ months was almost as useful as production for 11 months for predicting greasy fleece weight. The multiple correlation coefficient between greasy fleece weight as the dependant variable and production per unit area and 11-months' body weight was 0.79 in 66 rams and 0.71 in 82 ewes. The inclusion of fold score did not improve prediction appreciably. The equation W = P/110 + B1 /12 may be used to predict greasy fleece weight (lb), W, where P is production over 11 months of greasy wool (mg/cm²) and B1 is 11-months' body weight (Ib). A table of this function is included so that values may be read directly. The technique may be a useful aid to selection of Merino sheep if recording of actual fleece weights is difficult or impossible. Nevertheless it should not be regarded as more than a moderately accurate substitute for actual fleece-weighing.

The paper shows how the linear regression depends on the selection of the reference frame. The slope of the fitted line and the corresponding Pearson’s correlation coefficient are expressed in terms of the rotation angle. The correlation coefficient is found to be maximized for a certain optimal angle, for which the slope attains a special optimal value. The optimal angle, the value of the optimal slope, and the corresponding maximum correlation coefficient were expressed in terms of the covariance matrix, but also in terms of the values of the slope, derived from the fitting at the nonrotated and right-angle-rotated axes. The potential of the new method is to improve the derived values of the fitting parameters by detecting the optimal rotation angle, that is, the one that maximizes the correlation coefficient. The presented analysis was applied to the linear regression of density and temperature measurements characterizing the proton plasma in the inner heliosheath, the outer region of our heliosphere.

5038 Background: To test the hypothesis that expression of osteopontin (OPN), an integrin-binding glycoprotein, can independently predict the potential aggressiveness of endometrial cancer. We studied OPN expression in endometrial cell carcinomas and correlated OPN expression levels with clinicopathologic tumor features. Methods: The status of OPN expression in benign and malignant endometrial cancer cell lines and tissues was analyzed by Western blot and immunohistochemistry. Nonparametric Spearman’s correlation coefficient method was used to assess the statistical significance of the correlation between clinicopathologic characteristics of tumor and OPN expression. Results: An increased expression of OPN was observed in the endometrial cancer compared to normal endometrial tissue samples. When the level of OPN in normal tissue was set at 1, its level in benign endometrial hyperplasia was slightly increased at 1.2, whereas the OPN level in the highly malignant endometrial carcinoma tissue was greatly increased by nearly 3- 5 folds. Amongst the 70 cases examined immunocytochemically, of the 23 grade 1 endometrial carcinomas, 6 were unstained and 12 stained weakly positive (+). For the 20 grade 3 or serous type endometrial carcinomas analyzed, 8 (40%) stained strongly positive (+++), 8 (40%) stained moderately positive (++) and 1 stained weakly positive (+). These results showed that the level of OPN expressed between grade 1 and grde 3 or more was significantly different (Spearman’s correlation coefficient method, p = 0.001). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that the increased level of OPN expression was significantly associated with reduced survival time of the patients. Conclusions: The results suggest that the increased OPN level may be involved in the malignant transformation of endometrial adenocarcinoma cells and OPN expression level is an important determinant for patient survival. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

These results showed that the level of OPN expressed between grade 1 and grade 3 or more was significantly different (Spearman's correlation coefficient method, p = 0.001). However, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that the increased level of OPN expression was not significantly associated with reduced survival time of the patients. Conclusion: The results suggest that the increased OPN level may be involved in the malignant transformation of endometrial adenocarcinoma cells. No significant financial relationships to disclose.
