This work establishes experimental conditions for the synthesis of polymeric fibers using the electrospinning technique, modifying some operational parameters such as drum collector rotation speed and applied voltage were modified. The samples were obtained from a copolymer of poly(lacticco-glycolic acid) (PLGA), with a molecular weight of approximately 220,000 g/mol, dissolved in a dimethyl sulfoxide/dichloromethane (3:1 v/v) solution. With the aim of developing scaffolds for bone tissue engineering, we added a calcium phosphate glass based on 44.5CaO-44.5P2O5-11Na2O to the fibrous PLGA structures. The preliminary characterization of these PLGA structures with and without the addition of biodegradable glass was performed using SEM analysis. We found the formation of aligned and homogeneous fibers with an average diameter of 5.2 ± 2.1 µm when using the 800 rpm - 8cm - 9 kV parameters. In addition, the incorporation of 1 wt.% of previously silanized calcium phosphate particles substantially altered the fiber morphology and porosity. However, a substantial increase in the bioactivity of the composite was observed in contrast with the unmodified PLGA.

Among the various polymeric options employed for the deposition of electrospun coatings, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) has been widely investigated thanks to its excellent mechanical properties, high chemical resistance, and good thermal stability. In this work, the electrospinning technique is used for the fabrication of functional PVDF fibers in order to identify and evaluate the influence of the experimental conditions on the nanofiber properties in terms of optical transmittance, wettability, corrosion resistance, and surface morphology. Some of these properties can play a relevant role in the prevention of ice formation in aircrafts. According to this, a matrix of 4 × 4 samples of aluminum alloy AA 6061T6 was successfully coated by controlling two operational input parameters such as the resultant applied voltage (from 10 up to 17.5 KV) and the flow rate (from 800 up to 1400 µL/h) for a fixed polymeric precursor concentration (15 wt.%). The experimental results have shown a multilevel fiber-bead structure where the formation of a fiber mesh directly depends on the selected operational parameters. Several microscopy and surface analysis techniques such as confocal microscopy (CM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), UV/vis spectroscopy, and water contact angle (WCA) were carried out in order to corroborate the morphology, transmittance, and hydrophobicity of the electrospun fiber composite. Finally, the corrosion behavior was also evaluated by electrochemical tests (Tafel curves measurement), showing that the presence of electrospun PVDF fibers produces a relevant improvement in the resultant corrosion resistance of the coated aluminum alloys.

Economical recovery of copper metal from leach liquors has been carried out by the simple process of cementing copper onto a suitable substrate metal, such as scrap-iron, since the 16th century. The process has, however, a major drawback of consuming more iron than stoichiometrically needed by the reaction. Therefore, many research groups started looking into the process more closely. Though it is accepted that the structural characteristics of the resultant copper deposit cause changes in reaction rates for various experimental conditions, not many systems have been systematically investigated. This paper examines the deposit structures and the kinetic data, and explains the correlations between them.A simple cementation cell along with rotating discs of pure iron (99.9%) were employed in this study to obtain the kinetic results The resultant copper deposits were studied in a Hitachi Perkin-Elmer HHS-2R scanning electron microscope operated at 25kV in the secondary electron emission mode.

Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co- methyl methacrylate) HM, was synthesized by free radical copolymerization, cross-linked with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and phosphorylated. The phosphate coupling was ensured by ATR spectroscopy. The in vitro mineralization ability of the phosphorylated HM (designated as PHM) was investigated by studying the nucleation and growth of calcium phosphate on its surface by immersing in simulated body fluid (SBF) solution. The coating morphology was studied by SEM and the Ca/P ratio of the coating by EDX analysis. The cell adhesion behaviour of PHM was studied by seeding Human osteosarcoma (HOS) cells for one week followed by SEM analysis along with HM as control. It was observed that HOS cells exhibited biomineralization of calcium phosphate on the surface of HM as well as on PHM with a significantly higher amount on the surface of PHM as observed by von kossa staining method. The results show that PHM is capable of in vitro mineralization under simulated physiological condition, promotes cell adhesion by providing an excellent cell friendly surface and it exhibits biomineralization of calcium phosphate in presence of HOS cells.

FeWO4 particles were synthesized by a simple, rapid and facile microwave technique and their catalytic properties in heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction were evaluated. This material was employed in the degradation of Amaranth azo dye. Individual and interactive effects of operational parameters such as pH, dye concentration and H2O2 dosage on the decolorization efficiency of Amaranth dye were evaluated by 23 central composite design. According to characterization techniques, a porous material and a well-crystallized phase of FeWO4 oxide were obtained. Regarding the photo-Fenton reaction assays, up to 97% color and 58% organic carbon removal were achieved in the best experimental conditions. In addition, the photo-Fenton process maintained treatment efficiency over five catalyst reuse cycles to indicate the durability of the FeWO4 catalyst. In summary, the results reveal that the synthesized FeWO4 material is a promising catalyst for wastewater treatment by heterogeneous photo-Fenton process.

Porous hollow SnO 2 nanospheres were prepared by means of enforced Sn 2+ hydrolysis method under hydrochloric acid medium. These hollow nanospheres with an average diameter of 220nm had a very thin shell thickness of about 40nm and were surrounded by elongated octahedral-like nanoparticles with the apex oriented outside. The experimental conditions, such as HCl content, reaction temperature and time directly dominated the morphology, structure and crystallinity of the obtained samples. A pre-oxidation-nucleation-growth mechanism and inside-out Ostwald-ripening method was proposed on the basis of the previous research and time-dependent experiments. Electrochemical tests showed that the porous hollow SnO 2 nanospheres exhibited improved cycling performance for anode materials of lithium-ion batteries, which retained a high reversible capacity of 540.0mAhg-1, and stable cyclic retention at 120th cycle.

This paper presents data on the effects of operational parameters (number of revolutions, linear pressure, and gap) of the PFI refiner on the swellability of recycled fiber, which was characterized by water retention value (WRV). The results showed that the increase of recycled fiber’s WRV was proportional to the number of revolutions and the linear pressure, but inversely proportional to the gap. The mathematical relation between these parameters and the fiber WRV could be described by an empirical model for gaps greater than 0.1 mm. Scanning electron microscopic images of fiber morphology showed that the basic framework of fibers could be maintained with the gap greater than 0.1 mm, but was destroyed with smaller gaps. This model provides a technical reference for quantitative control of refining treatment and an effective method for improving recycled fiber quality.

The objective of this study was to investigate the adsorption/desorption behavior of oleuropein on different types of silk fibroin matrices including silk fibroin microfibers (MF), regenerated silk fibroin (RSF), and silk fibroin nanofibers (NF). Nanofibers with an average diameter of ranging between 24 and 326 nm were successfully prepared using the electrospinning technique. The effects of the silk fibroin concentration, the voltage applied and the distance between needle tip and collector plate on the morphology of the NF were investigated. The adsorption capacities of MF, RSF and NF were determined as 104.92, 163.07 and 228.34 mg oleuropein per gram of material, respectively. The percentage of initially adsorbed oleuropein that was desorbed was 86.08, 91.29 and 96.67% for MF, RSF and NF, respectively.NF and RSF discs loaded with oleuropein were subjected to disc diffusion assays to determine their antibacterial activity against test microorganisms Staphylococcus epidermidis (Gram +) and Escherichia coli (Gram – ). The results showed that both biomaterials possessed antibacterial properties after loading with oleuropein. Wound scratch assays using oleuropein released from NF revealed an enhancement of cell migration, indicating a wound healing property of the material. In conclusion, the NF can be utilized as a biofunctional polymeric material with better performance for the adsorption and desorption of oleuropein compared with MF and RSF.

Scanning electron microscope allowed us to get screens of different cheese microstructure that form a base for further investigation of a cheese structure state before and after the process of drying and for their comparison. Any cheese structure presents a matrix of proteins penetrated with moisture capillaries; fat globules are located both inside the protein matrix and on a cheese surface. Shape of capillaries is either round or oval. Capillaries vary in size and number that has an impact on the cheese pattern which is described by hole and void shapes and order. Electron microscopy was also used for detecting deposition of calcium phosphate. Particles of calcium phosphate changed in size, before drying they were 10–12 µm, and after drying they reached 20–30 µ. These particles concentrate in the dried cheese and agglomerate into larger particles. The most concentrated calcium phosphate proportion was found in pores and micro-voids of the dry cheese. As for mature cheese samples, calcium lactate was established as well.

Coaxial electrospinning (EC) is a technology that allows the encapsulation of active compounds, such as ethyl lauroyl arginate (LAE), in shell/core structures, in order to develop new antimicrobial materials for food packaging that slow down the release of active compounds and extend the food’s shelf life. For this reason, the objective of this study was to develop antimicrobial fibers shell/core type by EC. Two polymers with different hydrophilic character, polylactic acid (PLA) for the shell and polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) and LAE for the core, were used to obtain PLA/PVOH-LAE fibers and slow the release of the antimicrobial compound. The morphology of fibers was evaluated by optical microscopy and their thermal properties through thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). LAE release studies were carried out in a fatty food simulant (ETOH 95%), and was compared with the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of LAE against a gram-positive bacteria, Listeria innnocua. The optical micrographs showed the obtaining of the shell/core structure with an average diameter of approximately 0.6 µm, and the TGA analyses demonstrated the thermal protection of LAE by the shell of the fibers. Released LAE reached the equilibrium state in ETOH 95% during the first 3 hours, maintaining a higher concentration than the MIC value obtained in L. innnocua (10 ppm). The results demonstrate that new packaging materials with antimicrobial activity such as PLA/PVOH-LAE polymeric fibers with a shell/core structure can be obtained through the coaxial electrospinning technique. Keywords: coaxial electrospinning, ethyl lauroyl arginate, fibers, shell/core, food packaging.
