This editorial revisit the concept of alignment within the agency theoretic view of organisational performance management. Based on an analysis of a real-life case, we examine how far the theoretical reasoning based on the concept of ‘three-legged stool’ is practically relevant. Findings of our case suggests that while there is seemingly misalignment among the three established structures of performance evaluation, decision right allocation and incentive compensation, the ‘misalignment’ is ‘repaired’ with the support of two other governance structures namely, HR and CRM policies. We believe that the design of performance management is not to be confined to the ‘three-legged stool’ but practically extended to other forms of governance structures.

One of the current approaches to performance management is based on examination of organisational performance through measurement and evaluation of the processes. Processes provide an excellent basis for the arrangement of a measurement system and performance management. The application of the process approach in performance management is based on the evaluation of processes rather than on the output results. Based on our research, we bring findings about approaches to process performance evaluation of companies operating in Slovakia. The aim of our research is to assess current approaches for evaluation of process performance in the context of application of process orientation in companies operating in Slovakia. We used questionnaires to collect data. Our sample consists of 137 companies from various sectors, sizes and age to obtain a broader overview. The results show the level of utilisation of process management and approaches to evaluation of process performance towards process improvement. Companies follow their objectives with some critical success factors (CSF), and they know their bottlenecks and strong points. This provides decision support for them, but this method ignores overall performance and ranking issues. In this study, a comprehensive methodology is recommended to find out an effective solution to the performance evaluation problem for making strategic performance management. Two methods are used from different areas as a framework. To select the higher-performing departments, Data Envelopment Analyses (DEA) is used as a linear programming-based main method. Moreover, a Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) method is proposed, Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluations (PROMETHEE), to increase the discrimination power of DEA and eliminate undesirable results because of determining weight bounds. These two methods are combined, and a comprehensive solution model is presented in the study. In the end, a case study is given for a real-life example, an integrated DEA-PROMETHEE method is applied to the case. When the case results are examined, the proposed model produces more logical weight values and better results.

Network production systems are widely observed in the current real life, and the performance management of network production systems has been widely studied. The previous literatures have contributed to the performance evaluation to parallel, serial, and converging systems. However, few literatures have considered the recycling systems. The current paper proposes a method on how to forecast the actual and frontier production abilities of recycling systems. Based on the forecasting results, the paper uses a DEA (data envelopment analysis) based method to appraise the operational efficiency of recycling systems. We choose the water utilization and recycling system as a background for our research. According to the proposed method, Chinese provincial water utilization and recycling systems are examined and analyzed. The results show that the reuse level of water in China is still very low.

In the recent years, direct message exchange between vehicles in order to improve the safety of road traffic has been attracting lots of interest in both networking and road safety communities. While travelling on a road, vehicles form an ad hoc network called Vehicular Ad hoc NETwork (VANET) and deploy life safety applications. Evaluating the performance of these applications is primordial for realizing VANETs in real life. Current literature lacks efficient ways to evaluate the performance of safety applications and mostly leverages on classical networking metrics like delay, delivery rate etc. In this paper, we consider both networking and safety concerns simultaneously to come up with more efficient methods. In particular, we first point out the significance of fairness and coverage from safety viewpoint. Then, we introduce two new metrics called beaconing rate and effective range aiming at providing more facilities for safety performance evaluation in VANET s research. Furthermore, realizing special characteristics of safety applications while disseminating beacon messages, we study the way that beacon dissemination protocols affect the performance of safety applications. We then conduct extensive simulation study to show the usefulness of the introduced metrics and derive some insights on the feasibility of driver‐assistant safety applications. Our evaluation also shows that sending the aggregated status of neighbouring vehicles in addition to vehicle's own status, and instead, increasing beacon transmission interval may be invoked in order to assist safety applications in providing satisfactory services to drivers.

This paper briefly introduces several problems of employee performance management in construction enterprises in China, including taking performance evaluation as performance management, being lack of consistent bidirectional communications, one-sided use of results of performance evaluation, malposition of evaluators, psychological disadvantages and barriers of evaluated people and so on; the paper also provides measures including enhancing publicity on purposes and significance of performance management for employees of construction enterprises, utilizing all-round key performance index method to decompose employee-level performance indexes, enhancing communications on performance, and using results of performance evaluation in a scientific way, in order to improve performance management of construction enterprises. This research conclusion can play a role in guiding improvement of performance management of construction enterprises.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop a performance management (PM) scale questionnaire that encompasses the pre-requisite, performance planning, performance evaluation, performance review, and performance application dimensions of PM. Design/methodology/approach In the study, the 33 questionnaire questions were first validated using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and then by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) along the three performance dimensions. The research sample consists of 330 entrepreneurs. The factor analysis results confirm the validity of the questionnaire as a reliable entrepreneur PM evaluation tool, as evidenced by the composite reliability of 0.845 and the average variance extracted of 0.532. Findings All constructs revealed the acceptable internal consistency reliability. A good model fit was found for the measurement model using several fit index like χ2=449.983, degree of freedom=415, p-value (p)=0.114, goodness of fit index=0.927, adjusted goodness of fit index=0.901, root mean square error of approximation=0.016, and root of mean square residuals=0.032. Research limitations/implications The PM model was examined using EFA and CFA only. A sample with only SMEs entrepreneurs and large sample size and sample area can be used in future research. Practical implications This research paper is an endeavor to explore only the reliability and validity of the PM model. Thus all the five dimension, namely “pre-requisite” “performance planning,” “performance evaluation,” “performance review,” and “performance application” proved out of be reliable and validated when it will be tested in case of SMEs’ high-growth sectors and high-impact sectors. Originality/value The main contribution of this research is that all factors have a good fit and acceptable reliability value; each factor can be measured individually depending on the nature of the research.
