Medical writers and translators need information of three kinds: conceptual, contextual and textual. When in possession of this information, they can progressively improve their efficiency. Textual genre has proved to be useful to linguistic mediators of professional texts, providing them with the communicative and textual competence required. I suggest that the scope of textual genre can usefully be widened to include the notion of genre systems. This notion can be particularly useful for obtaining contextual information and understanding complex communicative activities in professional groups and can help enhance the professional competence of medical writers and translators. This paper has a two-fold objective: to describe the dynamic continuum of medical communication that operates in the genre system constituted by product information genres in the pharmaceutical sector also considering the restraints, genre conventions and sequence imposed by metagenres; and to illustrate the intralinguistic genre shift translation process that takes place between the summary of product characteristics and the package leaflet.

Translation revision is an integral part of the overall translation process and aims to enhance the translation quality. Differentiation should be made between revision (editing) and proofreading. Special attention is paid to functions performed by a reviser, i.e. actions aiming at producing the text devoid of any defects. The research is topical because an attempt is made to develop a general approach to translation revision which so far is lacking in translation practice. The article reveals the results of an experiment in which the same text has been revised by seven professional revisers. It is concluded that a reviser can enhance the translation quality provided his / her professional competence is better than that of the translator. But still the translated text can have weaknesses missed by the reviser. Moreover, it is found that thorough revision and rewriting of the text not always make it ideal; in some cases, the quality can suffer due to the false interpretation of the text content by the reviser. The research is innovative because it identifies subjective approaches of revisers to translation revision.


The article deals with the problem of academic discussion’ opportunities in teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language. The author emphasizes the subjective interpretation of the topic as the essential characteristic, the main genre law of the essay. Bright subjectivity encourages the reader to meditate and dialogue with the text. We can offer an essay for discussion to foreigners speaks Ukrainian at medium and high levels. This will be especially useful for foreign students of the humanities. Examples of essay prose are relevant to future Ukrainian philologist, historians, political scientists, sociologists, cultural scientists, and art historians, as the essay thematic spectrum is concentrated in these areas. In addition, reading essays and their discussion will promote the development of textual competence – the main component of the humanitarian’s professional competence. Among the various forms of modern essay, an essay in the form of a column in the media is a most interesting in the aspect of language learning. Small size, an appeal to important contemporary themes, and the involvement of elements of the colloquial style – these basic features determine the linguodidactic potential of an essay-column. The article proposes a detailed analysis of the essay “One against All” by S. Zadan and shows its internal contradiction. Synonymic rows make one global antithesis: a compromise and a struggle. The analysis reveals how ambiguous the problem is, how subjective the authorʼs point of view is and how productive it is for organizing discussion. The author's questions give rise to student answers and a lot of new questions. The article proposes the plan of the discussion and emphasizes the importance of the psychological factors and the personal teacher’s traits (the ability to feel the interests of the group, to create a positive psychological microclimate, to interest students, to call for a trusting conversation). Prospects for further research are the selection and linguodidactic analysis of Ukrainian essays suitable for use in the study of foreigners.

In the present study, communication by texts is seen as a prerequisite for constructing textual competence through case studies in the university students’ training. The thematic texts are oriented to nature-related concepts that create an integrative context of the learning (kindergarten children’s poems in the pedagogical interaction are aimed at developing professional competence in future pre-school teachers). Nonparametric methods for nominal data are used (test of goodness of fit and test of independence). The predominant text-initiating technique (the descriptive one) in the case study predetermines the leading orientation of the students towards the knowledge about the natural world as part of the educational field "Еnvironment" in the kindergarten (47.62% of all the integration opportunities). The research shows that students in pedagogy find successful decisions on professional cases.

The link between the level of qualification described as competence of the nursing staff and the patient outcome is repeatedly indicated in patient’s safety studies. The Bologna process initiated in 1999 triggered a Europe-wide reform process in the field of education, leading to reforms in nursing education in Europe that promoted the academization of nursing in many countries. In this context, a shift from teaching to learning outcomes occurred which spurred the development of competence frameworks at the European, national and profession-specific level. Competence measurement instruments are important for improving nursing education as well as nursing practice. Studies using such instruments can point to the strength and limitations of the educational and of the health care system of the countries under study. The aim of this article is to describe the translation process of the English version of the Nurse Professional Competence (NPC) Scale to create a German version to be used within German-speaking countries within the European Network of Nursing Academies (ENNA). The background of translating the NPC Scale from English into German is a European research project initiated by ENNA in which 11 European Higher Education Institutes participated. The article proceeds by providing information about nursing work in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. By accounting for the nationally specific conditions of nursing education and by describing the translation process, the study points to the relevance of context specific conditions for measuring self-reported professional competences. Making transparent the translation process supports the applicability of this scale in other research projects.

This article analyzes data generated by the combined use of keylogging and eye tracking to examine grammatical (de)metaphorization as a case of explicitation/implicitation (Steiner 2001). It also aims at investigating effortful text production from the perspective of automaticity and monitoring in the translation process (Tirkkonen-Condit 2005). Brazilian and German physicists and professional translators were recruited to translate one of two versions of an English (L2) source text into Brazilian Portuguese or German, respectively (L1). The versions differed in the level of grammatical metaphoricity of the sentences. Quantitative and qualitative data was analyzed to determine the impact of metaphoricity level on target text renditions as evidence of effort in the translation process. Results showed that regardless of which of the two versions was translated, most subjects opted for a particular wording from the start of their text production process; subsequent changes had to do with attempting more delicate choices in lexis rather than in grammar, evidence in favor of Tirkkonen-Condit’s claims about automatism in the translation process. Variables used to measure effort (i.e., number of renditions in microunits, pause duration, and drafting time) indicated that (de)metaphorization is an effortful procedure. Eye tracking, eliciting more fine-grained data, was instrumental in mapping instances of grammatical (de)metaphorization. The results have implications for issues related to the development of professional competence in translation, suggesting that instances of grammatical (de)metaphorization relate to higher levels of monitoring.
