Previous research highlights a range of positive developmental outcomes associated with attending summer camp. Close staff-camper relationships likely contribute to positive development, but little is known about how these bonds are formed. The current study utilized constructivist thematic analysis of interviews with campers (n = 8) and staff members (n = 7) at an overnight summer camp to examine the factors and processes that promote or inhibit close staff-camper relationship formation. The main themes identified were striking a balance, level of experience, and relationship-promoting behaviors. Staff members experience apparent paradoxes in their roles (e.g., relating to campers while also exerting authority), but navigate these tensions by using relationship-promoting behaviors and through increased experience. These findings suggest that staff training and supervision should emphasize relationship-promoting behaviors, continue throughout the summer, and be informed by campers’ perspectives. Additionally, camp administrators should capitalize on accrued experience by prioritizing staff retention.

ObjectivesTo evaluate the quality and coverage of the campaign to distribute oral cholera vaccine (OCV) during a cholera outbreak in Hoima, Uganda to guide future campaigns of cholera vaccine.DesignSurvey of communities targeted for vaccination to determine vaccine coverage rates and perceptions of the vaccination campaign, and a separate survey of vaccine staff who carried out the campaign.SettingHoima district, Uganda.ParticipantsRepresentative clusters of households residing in the communities targeted for vaccination and staff members who conducted the vaccine campaign.ResultsAmong 209 households (1274 individuals) included in the coverage survey, 1193 (94%; 95% CI 92% to 95%) reported receiving at least one OCV dose and 998 (78%; 95% CI 76% to 81%) reported receiving two doses. Among vaccinated individuals, minor complaints were reported by 71 persons (5.6%). Individuals with ‘some’ education (primary school or above) were more knowledgeable regarding the required OCV doses compared with non-educated (p=0.03). Factors negatively associated with campaign implementation included community sensitisation time, staff payment and problems with field transport. Although the campaign was carried out quickly, the outbreak was over before the campaign started. Most staff involved in the campaign (93%) were knowledgeable about cholera control; however, 29% did not clearly understand how to detect and manage adverse events following immunisation.ConclusionThe campaign achieved high OCV coverage, but the surveys provided insights for improvement. To achieve high vaccine coverage, more effort is needed for community sensitisation, and additional resources for staff transportation and timely payment for campaign staff is required. Pretest and post-test assessment of staff training can identify and address knowledge and skill gaps.

The purpose of the study was to capture the meaning of segregated summer camp experiences to youths with disabilities. The experiences of nine youths with physical, sensory, or behavioral disabilities between the ages of 14 and 19 were captured using the phenomenological methods of semistructured interviews, document review, and field notes. Mothers’ perceptions were also gathered. The thematic analysis revealed three themes: not alone, independence, and a chance to discover. Camp experiences provided a reprieve from perceptions of disability isolation often felt in their home communities. The campers experienced increased self-reliance, independence, and new understandings of their physical potential. The findings are discussed within the context of identity development and therapeutic landscapes.

The number of children in state mental institutions is inevitably increasing. At the same time it is increasingly difficult to generate enough staff adequate for caretaking, training, and supervision. There are no instant solutions to this problem; no hidden panaceas that might make it right soon. Hoping for some partial help, it makes sense to review the place of the pediatrician in the state mental hospital and the hospital's traditional sources for program design as well as staff training and supervision. Such hospitals were designed for adults. In addition, they both benefit and suffer from a massive tradition and inertia.

Abstract Secondary schools in European countries increasingly implement comprehensive smoke-free school policies (SFSPs) that prohibit most or even all adolescents from smoking during school hours. Consistent enforcement of SFSPs is essential for realizing optimum effectiveness. A main challenge represents adolescents who persistently violate the rules. We studied how staff in European countries respond to these persistent violators and why they may turn a blind eye. We used interview transcripts from 69 staff members at 22 schools in 6 European countries to identify cases in which staff turned a blind eye. We then applied thematic analysis for identifying the considerations as to why they turn a blind eye. Turning a blind eye on persistent violators happened among school staff in all six countries. Three considerations were identified. First, staff believe their primary role and duty is to support all adolescents to develop into well-functioning adults, and sometimes it is best to accept smoking. Second, staff expect that applying stricter disciplinary measures will not stop persistent violators and is more likely to create more severe problems. Third, staff do not feel supported by relevant actors in society (e.g. parents) in influencing adolescent smoking. We conclude that staff’s considerations stress the need to support school staff in enforcing the increasingly comprehensive rules on the most persistent smokers.

This study examined independent engagement in leisure activities of six institutionalised persons with profound multiple handicaps. Independent engagement was defined as manipulating leisure materials in the absence of concurrent resident-staff interactions. A 10-month intervention comprised leisure materials enrichment, assignment of staff duties including leisure activities manager, staff training and supervision. A time-series reversal design with momentary time sampled observations was used. Results showed increases and maintenance of not only engagement accompanied by staff interaction, but also of independent engagement. Resident-staff interaction was also increased and maintained. Problems and directions for future research are discussed.

This article introduces ‘Ding Ding Lok’ (DDL), a group game especially designed for persons affected by mild-to-moderate intellectual disability and explores its utility in rehabilitation service settings in Hong Kong. Reports from service staff who participated in the pilot project were analysed using thematic analysis. Two key questions were explored: (1) staff members’ perceived benefits of the game for service users and (2) source of enjoyment for staff members in the game process. Results of the thematic analysis generated four themes, including ‘Social Repertoire Expansion’, ‘Exercising Cognitive Abilities’, ‘Leisure & Recreation’ and ‘Personal growth’ for the first question on perceived benefits and five themes including ‘Positive interactions’, ‘Users’ positive feelings’, ‘Increased understanding’, ‘Game design’ and ‘Users’ improvement’ for the second question on source of enjoyment for staff members. On the whole, DDL was perceived to be highly beneficial for the service users and were regarded as very enjoyable to the participating service staff.

Abstract Objective – To explore the types and nature of assistance library customers are asking library staff for in a large Canadian urban public library system. Methods – A qualitative study employing transaction logging combined with embedded observation occurred for three-day sample periods at a selection of nine branches over the course of eight months. Staff recorded questions and interactions at service desks (in person, by phone, and electronically), as well as questions received during scheduled and non-scheduled provision of mobile reference service. In addition to recording interaction details and interaction medium, staff members were also asked to indicate briefly the process or resources used to resolve the interaction. Survey data were entered and coded through thematic analysis. Results – The survey collected 6,099 interactions between staff and library customers. Of those 6,099 interactions, 1,920 (31.48%) were coded as pertaining to technology help. Further analysis revealed significant library customer need for help with Internet workstations and printing. Conclusions – Technology help is a core customer need for Edmonton Public Library, with requests varying in complexity and sometimes resolved with instruction. The library’s Internet workstations and printing system presented critical usability challenges that drove technology help requests.

Studies that assess large numbers of subjects for longitudinal research, for epidemiological purposes, or for the evaluation of prevention and intervention efforts, are very costly and should be undertaken with the greatest care to ensure their success. The success of a study, apart from its scientific merit, depends largely on the ability of the researcher to plan and set up a smoothly running operation. However, the skills required for such a task are often not acquired in academic training, nor do scientific journals abound with information on the practical aspects of running a large study. This paper summarizes the experience gained in executing a longitudinal study and covers aspects of planning, hiring of staff, training and supervision of interviewers, data collection and data entry and management. The importance of the use of the computer as a management tool is stressed.

INTRODUCTION Low back pain effects up to 80% of the population at some time during their active life. Questionnaires are available to help measure pain and disability. The Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) is the most commonly used outcome measure for low back pain. The aim of this study was to see if training in completing the ODI forms improved the scoring accuracy. PATIENTS AND METHODS The last 100 ODI forms completed in a hospital's spinal clinic were reviewed retrospectively and errors in the scoring were identified. Staff members involved in scoring the questionnaire were made aware of the errors and the correct method of scoring explained. A chart was created with all possible scores to aid the staff with scoring. A prospective audit on 50 questionnaires was subsequently performed. RESULTS The retrospective study showed that 33 of the 100 forms had been incorrectly scored. All questionnaires where one or more sections were not completed by the patient were incorrectly scored. A scoring chart was developed and staff training was implemented. This reduced the error rate to 14% in the prospective audit. CONCLUSIONS Clinicians applying outcome measures should read the appropriate literature to ensure they understand the scoring system. Staff must then be given adequate training in the application of the questionnaires.

This study in the state of New South Wales, Australia, explored what Specialist Homelessness Services are currently implementing in regard to consumer participation, what is working and what barriers to consumer participation have been encountered by both service users and providers. Three staff members, one consumer volunteer and 10 homeless persons from three services were interviewed. The interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. The study found that while consumers have some opportunities to participate, and that participation is beneficial, there were barriers to participation, such as staff attitudes and the nature of the consumer group. The implications of these findings for staff, consumers and future policy direction are discussed.
