Abstract. A Network model of an ultra-wide band, intra-chip wireless link is presented. Numerical data of Z-parameters, obtained from full wave simulation of the structure, are used to obtain a rational function representation via the Vector Fitting procedure. Brune's circuit synthesis is applied to generate the network model from rational functions.

Abstract. Network modelling of general, lossy or lossless, one-port and symmetric two-port passive electromagnetic structures in systematic manner is presented. Rational function representation of the numerical data of Z- or Y-parameters is obtained with the use of Vector Fitting procedure. A systematic strategy for obtaining equivalent lumped element circuit from the rational function, applying Brune's circuit synthesis, is also presented.

Abstract. During a routine analysis of whistlers on the wide-band VLF recording of the DEMETER satellite, a specific signal structure of numerous fractional-hop whistlers, termed the "Spiky Whistler" (SpW) was identified. These signals appear to be composed of a conventional whistler combined by the compound mode-patterns of guided wave propagation, suggesting a whistler excited by a lightning "tweek" spheric. Rigorous, full-wave modelling of tweeks, formed by the long subionospheric guided spheric propagation and of the impulse propagation across an arbitrarily inhomogeneous ionosphere, gave an accurate description of the SpW signals. The electromagnetic impulses excited by vertical, preferably CG lightning discharge, exhibited the effects of guided behaviour and of the dispersive ionospheric plasma along their paths. This modelling and interpretation provides a consistent way to determine the generation and propagation characteristics of the recorded SpW signals, as well as to describe the traversed medium.

Purpose A novel Ka-band compact parallel-coupled microstrip bandpass filter with harmonic suppression performance has been designed, implemented and tested on GaAs MMIC. Design/methodology/approach This proposed filter consists of modified coupled-line units with T-shaped open-stubs. Findings The proposed filter with T-shaped open-stubs is valuable in performance with low loss at fundamental frequency, suppression at harmonic frequencies and small size. The simulation is based on full-wave electromagnetic analysis and the measurement is based on chip test. It shows an insertion loss below 1.2 dB, return loss better than 20 dB in the pass band and high than 28 dB suppression at harmonic frequencies. Originality/value This Ka-band MMIC filter with harmonic suppression is attractive for the millimeter-wave system.

In this work, the influence of the inductor quality factor in wide band low noise amplifiers has been studied. Electromagnetic simulations have been used to model the integrated inductor broad band response. The influence of the quality factor on LNA performance of the inductors that compound the impedance matching networks, inductive degeneration and broadband load has been studied, obtaining design guidelines for optimizing the amplifier gain flatness. Using this guidelines, an LNA with wideband input matching, shunt-peaking load, and an output buffer was designed. Using Austria Mikro Systems BiCMOS 0.35 m process, a prototype has been fabricated achieving the following measured specifications: maximum gain of 12.5 dB at 3.4 GHz with a -3 dB bandwidth of 1.7–5.3 GHz, noise figure from 4.3 to 5.2 dB, and unity gain at 9.4 GHz.

Purpose This paper aims to present a SPICE model to represent antennas in receiving mode. The model can be used to evaluate the performance of the antenna when it is coupled to several different nonlinear electric circuits. The proposed methodology is particularly suitable for rectenna applications, as it allows the analysis of different configurations for a rectenna more efficiently than using full-wave analysis simulators coupled directly to each rectifier circuit. Design/methodology/approach The model presented uses reciprocity theory to calculate the ideal voltage source of the Thevenin-equivalent circuit for an antenna. Vector fitting is then used to approximate the model to rational functions that can be converted to Resistor, Inductor and Capacitor circuits. Additional components are added to the circuit to prevent numerical instability. Findings Two rectennas are used to illustrate the performance of the proposed model, one based on a 2.45-GHz rectangular patch antenna and another based on a planar spiral antenna. The second antenna has impedance with positive and negative real parts along the frequency range, which could lead to numerical instabilities. The proposed method is shown to be stable while working with these negative resistance values, which may appear during circuit parameterization. Research limitations/implications The equivalent SPICE circuit model for the antenna makes it easy to simulate nonlinear circuits connected to the antenna and perform transient analyses. The computational cost of antenna analysis is reduced, being more computationally efficient than methods that involve full-wave simulation. This characteristic makes it an interesting approach for working with rectennas, or any application where the time constant of the circuit is much longer than the period of the incident wave. Originality/value For most antenna applications, the numerical stability of the circuit can be achieved using passive enforcement. However, depending on the phase response of the antenna, the impedance that represents its far-field characteristic may present a negative real part, in which case, passive enforcement will fail. In this paper, the problem of numerical instability is solved by introducing an offset resistance and a current-controlled voltage source to the model.
