Carbon fabric/phenolic composites modified with potassium titanate whisker (PTW) were prepared by a dip-coating and hot-press molding technique, and the tribological properties of the resulting composites were investigated systematically using a ring-on-block arrangement under different sliding conditions. Experimental results showed that the optimal PTW significantly decreased the wear-rate. The worn surfaces of the composites and the transfer film formed on the counterpart steel ring were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to reveal the wear mechanisms. The transfer films formed on the counterpart surfaces made contributions to the improvement of the tribological behavior of the carbon fabric composites. The friction and wear of the filled carbon fabric composites was significantly dependent on the sliding conditions. It is observed that the wear-rate increased with increasing applied load and sliding speeds.

AbstractMotivated by recent finding of crystallographic-orientation-dependent etching behavior of sintered ceramics, the plasma resistance of nanocrystalline Y2O3-MgO composite ceramics (YM) was evaluated for the first time. We report a remarkably high plasma etching resistance of nanostructure YM surpassing the plasma resistance of commercially used transparent Y2O3 and MgAl2O4 ceramics. The pore-free YM ceramic with grain sizes of several hundred nm was fabricated by hot press sintering, enabling theoretical maximum densification at low temperature. The insoluble two components effectively suppressed the grain growth by mutual pinning. The engineering implication of the developed YM nanocomposite imparts enhanced mechanical reliability, better cost effectiveness with excellent plasma resistance property over their counterparts in plasma using semiconductor applications.

Energetic structural materials (ESMs) are an important class of military materials due to their good structural and energy-releasing characteristics. To improve the damage effect of metal–metal ESMs with good mechanical properties, W was added to the 48Al–52Ni composites, and the effect of W on the impact-induced energy release behaviors was investigated. The results showed that the hot-press process and the addition of W did not change the microstructure and surface state of the constituent particles, leading to a stable onset temperature of the Al–Ni intermetallic reaction in (48Al–52Ni)100-xWx composites. Meanwhile, the decrease in the contact area between Al and Ni in the composites with increased W content resulted in the decrease in reaction heat. During the impact process, the intermetallic reaction of W caused by the Al–Ni intermetallic reaction, as well as the oxidation reaction of Al and Ni caused by the brittle fracture along the weak interface, caused the released energy of (48Al–52Ni)40W60 to reach 2.04 kJ/g.
