Between 1880 and 1910, Japanese exports increased in volume, changed composition, and shifted from leading industrialized countries toward poorer Asian neighbors. Using a new dataset disaggregated by product and trade partner for the universe of Japanese exports, we findextensive marginsaccounted for 30 percent of export growth, with trade costs and market size associated with successful market entry. There was also considerable persistence in maintaining market presence and exit was rare. These stylized facts provide insight into both the country’s economic development, as reflected in its exported products, as well as the demand conditions of its trade partners.

EU border regions continue to face economic and social disadvantages compared to other regions in the same country. Since 1990, the European Commission has been implementing extensive territorial cooperation programs to support EU border regions in solving regional problems and building social cohesion. This study offers a contribution for decreasing the economic and social disadvantages of EU border regions by investigating the complementarity between institutional EU cross-border cooperation and social entrepreneurship. We argue that both concepts build upon similar drivers and characteristics with the aim of creating impact and bringing about change. We test and improve our initially literature-based framework to provide a better insight into how institutional and entrepreneurial processes could benefit from each other. We conduct interviews with experts operating at different governance levels and in various EU countries and border regions. The complementarity between both concepts is confirmed considering a differentiation between governance levels and fields of expertise. The results show that complementarity between the concepts mainly exists in terms of taking advantage of opportunities for a certain effect. The commercial activities of social enterprises are seen as effective, but it is necessary for social enterprises to establish sustainable EU cross-border cooperation and to improve regional social and economic development.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the economic development in Singapore, Hong Kong and Macao to find the reasons for the success. Design/methodology/approach – Applying economic development theories and using archival data to examine the development strategies of the three economies. Findings – There is no single model suitable for economic development for all, and small economies need to be strategically interventionist by either inducing development or balancing the disequilibria caused by development. Originality/value – This is the first comparative study to examine these three fast-growing small economies. The findings lend insight into Hirschman’s theory of unbalanced growth and Stiglitz’s assertion that different economies and conditions require different development strategies.

The short text of Elisabeth Belenson can be understood as an insight into the nature of the human soul. The author describes madness as a special state of the soul and the most mysterious and dangerous way of moving towards God. It is also a grasp of the mentality and way of thinking of philosophers and writers of post-revolutionary Russian emigration, in which in a strange relationship there is Greek mythology, criticism of positivism and faith in God’s Mercy.

The growth of bureaucratic organization is seen as a characteristic inherent in capitalism. The concentration of economic power in South Africa is used as a measure of the extent of bureaucratization in this country. It is argued that this development is increasing and that such a development is structurally determining bureaucratic ways of thinking. Such an ethos is dysfunctional to the vitality of economic development; this problem thus warrants our attention. It is suggested that the entrepreneurial spirit is the prime mover in economic development; this way of thinking is, moreover, described and explained. It is further suggested that this way of thinking could be promoted and certain methods are proposed. It is, however, argued that much of the attention given to the entrepreneur has been misdirected to sectors of the economy which are in fact peripheral to economic development. The development of the small business sector is certainly of some importance; this sector cannot, however, solve our major problem, and that is the lack of real vitality of big business which grows by take-overs and mergers rather than by producing and distributing more wealth. This shortcoming, it is argued, is a function of the reproduction of the bureaucratic way of thinking.

The Constitution of South Africa imposes a burden on municipalities to engage in local economic development. Municipal local economic development practitioners are often in doubt regarding the various mechanisms available to them to implement local economic development. This article provides insight into the processes and issues surrounding the use of an external mechanism (a private company owned by the municipality) as a local economic development agency. The lessons learnt from the Overstrand Local Economic Development Agency are compared with findings of an international study of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development on 16 local economic development agencies. The article provides guidelines to local economic development practitioners to follow before, during and after the establishment of a local economic development agency.

Recent evidence strongly suggests that firms’ joint action may be insufficient for the creation of clusters in order to face the new competitive pressures of globalization. To cope with these pressures, the authors argue that governments can play an important role in the process of creating the development of clusters. Based on a theoretical framework, they examine the way in which governmental intervention and public policies to foster cluster creation may provide positive outcomes. Here, the authors study the different approaches developed in cluster theories and provide an insight into the set of governmental and policy roles that may facilitate the formulation of local clusters. Finally, they propose a re-conceptualization of clusters theory that will potentially increase its value as a comprehensive tool for regional economic development.
