Virtual human body models contribute to designing safe and user-friendly products through virtual prototyping. Anthropometric biomechanical models address different physiques using average dimensions. In designing, e.g., personal protective equipment, orthopedic tools, or vehicle safety systems, biomechanical models with the correct geometry and shape shall play a role. The presented study shows the variations of subject-specific anthropometric dimensions from the average of the different population groups in the Czech Republic and China as a background for the need for personalized human body models. The study measures a set of dimensions used to design clothing patterns of Czech children, Czech adolescents, Czech adults, and Chinese adults and compares them to the corresponding age average, which is represented by a scaled anthropometric human body model. The cumulative variation of the dimensions used to design the clothing patterns increases the further the population group is from the average. It is smallest for the Czech adults at 7.54 ± 6.63%; Czech adolescents report 7.93 ± 6.25%; Czech children differ be 9.52 ± 6.08%. Chinese adults report 10.86 ± 11.11%. The variations from the average of the particular dimensions used to design clothing patterns prove the necessity of having personalized subject-specific models. The measured dimensions used to design the clothing patterns serve as the personalization of particular body segments and lead to a subject-specific virtual model. The developed personalization algorithm results in the continuous body surface desired for contact applications for assessing body behavior and injury risk under impact loading.

Abstract Pedestrians are one of the most vulnerable road users. In 2019, the USA reported the highest number of pedestrian fatalities in nearly three decades. The pre-impact conditions of Car-to-Pedestrian Collisions (CPC) vary significantly in terms of vehicles characteristics (e.g. front-end geometry, stiffness, etc.) and pedestrian characteristics (e.g. anthropometry, posture, etc.). The influence of pedestrian gait posture on CPC injury outcomes has not been well analyzed. The purpose of this study was to numerically investigate the changes in pedestrian kinematics and injuries across various gait postures in two different vehicle impacts. Five finite element (FE) human body models, that represent the 50th percentile male through the gait cycle, were developed and used to perform CPC simulations with two generic vehicle models representing a low-profile and high-profile vehicle. In the impacts with the high-profile vehicle, the pedestrian models usually slid above the bonnet leading edge and reported shorter wrap around distances than the low-profile vehicle impacts. The pedestrian postures influenced the post-impact rotation of the pedestrian and consequently, the impacted head region. Pedestrian posture also influenced the risk of injuries in the lower and upper extremities. Higher bone bending moments were observed in the stance phase posture compared to the swing phase. The findings of this study should be taken into consideration when examining pedestrian protection protocols. In addition, the results of this study can be used to improve the design of active safety systems used to protect pedestrians in collisions.

For L4 and above autonomous driving levels, the automatic control system has been redundantly designed, and a new steering control method based on brake has been proposed; a new dual-track model has been established through multiple driving tests. The axle part of the model was improved, the accuracy of the transfer function of the model was verified again through acceleration-slide tests; a controller based on interference measurement was designed on the basis of the model, and the relationships between the controller parameters was discussed. Through the linearization of the controller, the robustness of uncertain automobile parameters is discussed; the control scheme is tested and verified through group driving test, and the results prove that the accuracy and precision of the controller meet the requirements, the robustness stability is good. Moreover, the predicted value of the model fits well with the actual observation value, the proposal of this method provides a new idea for avoiding car out of control.

This paper presents the first comprehensive study of the performance and market timing ability of the equity funds that comprise the Hong Kong Mandatory Provident Funds (MPF) scheme. In general, our results suggest that US equity funds consistently underperform relative to the market, while the other fund groups consistently outperform the market. The stock-selection ability of MPF constituent equity funds in times of changing economic condition is also investigated. The evidence is consistent with previous studies, which suggest that the conditional models decrease the individual fund traditional alpha measure. The market timing models of Treynor–Mazuy and Henriksson–Merton provide evidence of superior market timing ability.

The relevance of scientific research on the specifics of the institutional environment for the development of the Institute of Science in the Russian Federation is associated with the rapid development of the digital economy, in which the development of science is becoming the most important factor in ensuring Russia's competitiveness on the world stage. The author conducted a comprehensive study of the specifics of the institutional environment of the development of the Institute of Science in the Russian Federation. The article studies the stages of formation and development of science as a certain social institution. The paper presents the criteria of institutionalization and it is established that the Institute of Science meets them. The study highlights the purpose and functions of science as a social institution. The paper also proposes the institutional environment for the functioning of the Institute of Science, taking into account the state and the individual as an integral part of successful development. The author concludes that science as a social institution is a self-organizing, self-regulating and self-developing system based on the realization of human potential through special tools of scientific activity and special organizations and aimed at the production and dissemination of scientific knowledge.

Abstract SARS-CoV-2 has infected millions of people globally and continues to undergo evolution. Emerging variants can be partially resistant to vaccine induced and therapeutic antibodies, emphasizing the urgent need for accessible, broad-spectrum therapeutics. Here, we report a comprehensive study of ensovibep, the first trispecific clinical DARPin candidate, that can simultaneously engage all three units of the spike protein trimer to potently inhibit ACE2 interaction, as revealed by structural analyses. The cooperative binding of the individual modules enables ensovibep to retain inhibitory potency against all frequent SARS-CoV-2 variants, including Omicron, as of December 2021. Moreover, viral passaging experiments show that ensovibep, when used as a single agent, can prevent development of escape mutations comparably to a cocktail of monoclonal antibodies (mAb). Finally, we demonstrate that the very high in vitro antiviral potency also translates into significant therapeutic protection and reduction of pathogenesis in Roborovski dwarf hamsters infected with either the SARS-CoV-2 wild-type or the Alpha variant. In this model, ensovibep prevents fatality and provides substantial protection equivalent to the standard of care mAb cocktail. These results support further clinical evaluation and indicate that ensovibep could be a valuable alternative to mAb cocktails and other treatments for COVID-19.

The survey realized in 1992 on a military population allowed to collect anthropometric data on 688 males and 328 females. Among 73 measurements and 3 index, 26 of them have been retained for the comparison with previous surveys. Generally used for dimensioning human body models these data represent somatic measurements of reference, as weight and stature and segmentary measurements of trunk and limbs. A comparison with previous data, collected on a equivalent military population in 1973, confirms the modifications along the time are so significant that they can be considered as a phenomenon of morphological evolution. Likewise, the modification of the academic levels, average age and socio-cultural structures in the populations are combined to increase the anthropometric variability. It appears the military population presents a morphological modification with an overall increase in weight, stature and correlated dimensions. Otherwise, a light decrease of the cormic index indicates that the morphological transformation influences on the body proportions, with an increase more notable for the lower limbs compared to the trunk. The collected anthropometric information allow to update the Individual Database of ERGODATA from which ergonomie recommendations and statistical and morphological models of the human body can be proposed.
