AbstractTrematode transmission in aquatic habitats from molluscan intermediate host to vertebrate or invertebrate target host is typically undertaken by a free-living stage known as cercariae. Active locomotion by cercariae is a key aspect of the transmission process with the swimming speed potentially contributing to infection success. Individual cercarial species swim at different speeds but the significance of this to infection potential has not been determined. This study, using data from the scientific literature, investigates the role of swimming speed in relation to cercarial morphology, host-searching strategies and target host species. Larger cercariae swim faster than smaller ones with tail length being the principal factor controlling locomotion rates. Different cercarial morphotypes swim at different speeds, in particular, furcocercariae, with the exception of the schistosomes, being faster swimmers than mono-tailed cercariae. Host-searching behaviour has a significant influence on swimming speeds with ‘active-searching’ strategies swimming slower than those adopting ‘active-waiting’ or ‘prey mimcry’ strategies. Vertebrate-infecting cercariae swim faster than those infecting invertebrates with species targeting fish demonstrating the highest locomotion rates and those targeting arthropods the slowest speeds. The adaptions of individual cercarial swimming speeds to biological variables and their interactions with the physical processes of aquatic habitats are discussed.

The Impact

The role of a counsellor in educational institutions revolves mostly around academic and behavioural issues. The aim of this study is to identify common sources of stress among adolescence students and to determine the impact of coping strategies practised by the students in academics and life in general. The association between adolescent life, geographical location, stress sources, and coping strategies is explored in this work. Diverse factors contribute to stress, agitation and academic performanceamong students. The major factors that were considered for this study are regional and familial backgrounds of the students, their gender, residential status, communication skills, the five childhood coping strategies and their influence in the campus life. Counselling sessions were conducted for the students and the empirical data is classified using data mining techniques to analyze the factors that contribute to the behavioural aspects of the students.

Abstract This study compares the effect of the 2008 recession and subsequent recovery across generational cohorts by evaluating age-cohort trajectories of income inequality. Using data from the 2007 to 2016 waves of the Survey of Consumer Finances, we examine the trajectory of inequality for the overall population and by cohort in years spanning the Great Recession and subsequent recovery. We find that increases in per-capita income and wealth observed at the population-level during the recovery were not reflected among households below the median, leading to increasing inequality. Within cohorts, we observe growing inequality within cohorts in their primary working years. Findings are consistent with a model of integrative cumulative dis/ advantage, which predicts increasing within-cohort inequality over the life course influenced both by persistent micro- and macro-level processes of increasing heterogeneity. Our analyses highlight the potential role of extreme business cycle fluctuations, booms and busts, to exacerbate this underlying process.

The protein folding problem, i.e. the identification of the rules that determine the acquisition of the native, functional, three-dimensional structure of a protein from its linear sequence of amino-acids, still is a major challenge in structural molecular biology. Moreover, the identification of a series of neurodegenerative diseases as protein unfolding/misfolding disorders highlights the importance of a detailed characterisation of the molecular events driving the unfolding and misfolding processes in proteins. One way of exploring these processes is through the use of molecular dynamics simulations. The analysis and comparison of the enormous amount of data generated by multiple protein folding or unfolding simulations is not a trivial task, presenting many interesting challenges to the data mining community. Considering the central role of the hydrophobic effect in protein folding, we show here the application of two data mining methods – hierarchical clustering and association rules – for the analysis and comparison of the solvent accessible surface area (SASA) variation profiles of each one of the 127 amino-acid residues in the amyloidogenic protein Transthyretin, across multiple molecular dynamics protein unfolding simulations.

This chapter is interested in discussing how to use data mining techniques to assist in achieving an acceptable level of quality of service of telecommunication systems. The quality of service is defined as the metrics which are predicated by using the data mining techniques, decision tree, association rules and neural networks. Routing algorithms can use this metric for optimal path selection which in turn will affect positively on the system performance. Also, in this chapter management axis using data mining techniques were handled, i.e., check the status of the telecommunication networks, role of data mining in obtaining optimal configuration, how to use data mining technique to assure high level of security for the telecommunication. The popularity of data mining in the telecommunications industry can be viewed as an extension of the use of expert systems in the telecommunications industry. These systems were developed to address the complexity associated with maintaining a huge network infrastructure and the need to maximize network reliability while minimizing labor costs (Liebowitz, J. 1988). The problem with these expert systems is that they are expensive to develop because it is both difficult and time consuming to elicit the requisite domain knowledge from experts.

The National Employment Savings Trust (NEST) is a new pension scheme that will be introduced for employees on modest incomes in the UK from 2012. This paper draws out the implications of the NEST, focusing upon low-paid employees and their employers using data from the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings. The results suggest that the NEST will increase labour costs by between 0.6 and 0.8 per cent on average, and have a disproportionate effect on low pay industries and private sector firms employing fewer than 25 employees. The analysis highlights the potential role of the minimum wage to shield low pay workers from paying a share of the subsidies that the NEST will afford to its members.

Using data collected from 4 months of ethnographic research that was conducted during the summer of 2002, this article examines the complexity inherent in anthropological investigations of “tradition,” and also the multiplicity of ways that traditions are looked at by residents of Sambaa K’e and Dene Games organizers in the Northwest Territories. By exploring different interpretations of traditional Dene Games, the role of women in such games, and the ideological positions that have contributed to these interpretations, the ways in whichß certain understandings of tradition are privileged over others are elucidated.
