This paper proposes a relational and critical sociological perspective on discourse analysis, in particular on so-called “Critical Discourse Analysis” (CDA). The main argument of this paper is that CDA has not yet been able to turn its critical perspective towards its own field. Meanwhile, neither CDA nor other schools of discourse analysis can still pretend not to be integral parts of the system legitimizing social hierarchies in modern societies. The paper argues that discourse analysis can be seen as highly dependent on power relations, both because of its institutional positioning and because of its restricted reflexivity. A call for the development of a critical sociology of discourse analysis based on a relational approach is therefore presented. Its draft programme is largely based on inspiration from the sociology of knowledge, in particular from “the sociology of sociology” of Pierre Bourdieu.

This article sums up the discussion of a deep structural, linguistic and communicative theory. It is related to different but interconnected fields that enable a meticulous approach to the text, for it focuses on different aspects: starting with the outer layer, going through the structure and ending with its reception. It is the critical discourse analysis, which is a modern linguistic approach that works on the explanation and interpretation of language by going beyond the structure of a sentence and the textual interrelations to reach all the dominant social and historical contexts. Its goal is to analyze the discourse from a critical perspective through scrutiny, refutation and questioning. This approach has been part of the discourse analysis theory since the 60s as a body of knowledge that combines different fields, such as politics, sociology, psychoanalysis and rhetoric. It is concerned with studying political communication in society.

This Major Research Paper consists of a critical discourse analysis of the operation of whiteness in the field of fat studies, focusing on how it becomes invisible and consequently manifests in emergent theorizing, especially at its establishment as an academic discipline. Two fat studies readers were selected, one published then and one written more recently, with six chapters selected from each. Using a dialectical-relational approach, these texts were analyzed both individually and intertextually to look at the origin stories of the field, the use of language to obscure whiteness, and the need for critical race/intersectional approaches. Findings show that fat studies has, and predominantly continues to, find itself in a self-imposed state of ‘whiteout’, through which Black, Indigenous, and Racialized people, voices, and experiences are sanitized, marginalized, or erased altogether. To challenge this, fat studies must take up whiteness and white supremacy toward its goal of fat liberation for all.

This paper argues for closer interdisciplinarity between critical discourse analysis (CDA) and translation studies (TS). There has been very little CDA investigating discursive representations by news organisations across linguistic, political and cultural boundaries. Similarly researchers in TS have pointed out that the sensitive role news translation plays in discursive phenomena such as globalisation and political discourse remains largely underestimated. To address this gap, three methodological models are proposed for linking the dialectical-relational approach to CDA (Fairclough 1992, 1995, 2003) with text-based approaches in TS. A mini-case study will illustrate such links by analysing talks by Saudi women translated by BBC News into Standard Arabic and English. Findings reveal substantial transformations which cannot be dismissed as inevitable constraints of the news genre or translation, but are more likely to reflect prevailing narratives of Muslim women being ‘submissive’ and ‘oppressed’.
