What is qualitative in qualitative research? What is qualitative in qualitative research? Most qualitative research does not follow the methodology of grounded theory (GT). In methodological literature, however, qualitative research is defined in terms of GT. This leaves much qualitative research methodologically poorly defined in the first place. Secondly in the identification with GT the meaning of ‘qualitative’ is blurred and mixed with ideology. The essay pleads to take quality literally in defining empirical qualitative research methods and in the distinction with quantitative research.

Als gevolg van de groeiende aandacht voor discoursanalyse is er onmiskenbaar behoefte aan een goede introductie. Uitgevers lijken daar een fijne neus voor te hebben. Dat blijkt bijvoorbeeld uit het initiatief van Sage om vrijwel tegelijkertijd met maar liefst twee introducties op de markt te komen. De eerste introductie is een boekje in de reeks 'Qualitative Research Methods Series': de bekende blauwe reeks met inleidingen in diverse methoden van kwalitatief onderzoek. Het boekje is geschreven door Nelson Phillips en Cynthia Hardy. Beide auteurs hebben diverse studies verricht op het terrein van organisatieprocessen. De tweede introductie is geschreven door Louise Phillips en Marianne Jørgensen, die een achtergrond hebben in de communicatiewetenschappen. Hoewel beide boeken hetzelfde doel beogen (een inleiding bieden in het complexe veld van discoursanalyse), zijn ze onvergelijkbaar zowel wat betreft opzet als behandeling van het veld van discoursanalyse. Om die reden zal ik ze ook afzonderlijk bespreken.

ABSTRACT  The purpose of this research is to find out the promotion and marketing strategy for steel companies in Indonesia. The research method used in this research is qualitative and quantitative research methods. Qualitative research methods include interviews with resource persons and product users (extreme users and expert users) as well as literature studies of journals related to light steel, promotion, and marketing strategy. The conclusion of this research is the need for a promotion that can be accepted by customers and to be able to promote steel companies in Indonesia.   Keyword: branding, marketing, promotion, customers, steel.

Qualitative research methods have long set an example of rich description, in which data and researchers’ hermeneutics work together to inform readers of findings in specific contexts. Among published works, insight into the analytical process is most often represented in the form of methodological propositions or research results. This paper presents a third type of qualitative report, one in which the researcher’s process of coding, finding themes, and arriving at findings is the focus. Grounded theory analysis methods were applied to the interpretation of a single interview. The resulting document provides a narrative of the process one researcher followed when attempting to apply recommended methodological procedures to a single interview, providing a peek inside the black box of analysis often left unopened in final reports.

The issues surrounding the use and nature of the term 'validity' in qualitative research are controversial and many. In this paper, the author attempts to establish that 'validity' is not a single, fixed or universal concept, but rather a contingent construct, inescapably grounded in the processes and intentions of particular research methodologies and projects. The first section of this work deals with the problems faced in defining 'validity' in both quantitative and qualitative research methods and will briefly review other authors' attempts to categorise it. The work will then proceed to distinguish and compare the claims to 'validity' made by quantitative and qualitative researchers, highlighting similarities and differences as they emerge. Finally, an attempt will be made to establish that an understanding of nature of 'truth' is central to any theorisation of 'validity.' It will become clear that it is the affiliations of methodologies, concerning truth, that generate varying notions of 'validity.'

This study aimed to start an effort to evaluate the quality of thesis institutionally. The purpose of this study is to determine the quality of the thesis and determine the achievement of the quality of the thesis as a research work. This study is a descriptive evaluation. The study was conducted at the Department of PAI FITK IAIN Surakarta. The results showed several things. First, the majority of PAI student thesis in 2012 used qualitative research methods. Second, the quality of PAI student thesis in 2012 were generally good, on the thesis that uses quantitative and qualitative research methods. Third, the thesis uses quantitative research methods have a higher quality index than the thesis that uses qualitative research methods. Fourth, for the thesis used quantitative research methods showing the low quality of the elements present in the background of the problem and framework of thinking. Fifth, for the thesis used qualitative research methods showing the low quality of the elements contained in the title of the study andbackground of the problem

The application of qualitative research methods in Indonesia is more appropriate to use the concepts offered by Creswell, namely: ethnography, phenomenology, case studies, grounded theory and narratives. The functions of qualitative research include those that can be used to describe qualitative data, understand the uniqueness of phenomena, ensure data validity, process research, construct understanding, explore, and understand meaning. Of these several functions of qualitative research, the most difficult to do is to understand the meaning of all functions of qualitative research. For this reason, it is necessary to carry out systematic steps starting from digging up the data, then continuing with categorizing, and then creating themes. The example of the case carried out by Bung Karno in exploring the traditions in Indonesia so that he gave birth to five pearls which were then summarized in the five precepts, which was later called Pancasila, is an example of understanding the best meaning that Indonesia has.

The use of qualitative research methods by the Inspectorate SZW Margaret Chotkowski, Francien Rosing & Sandhya Badal The Inspectorate SZW conducted a longitudinal qualitative study on labor market re-integration services for unemployed youth on social benefits. This research design had some ethnographic features and was innovative for the Inspectorate. This article examines whether the Inspectorate and other, similar organizations can benefit from using such research methods. First, we describe the main characteristics and results of our research. Then we reflect on the research design and its added value, limitations and dilemmas for the Inspectorate. We conclude by illustrating how qualitative research with ethnographic features is, with some limitations, a valuable addition to the array of intervention methods used by supervising bodies such as the Inspectorate.

Social work students are drawn to qualitative research methods, perhaps because of their experience with interviewing and their interest in process. However, since students need to learn both qualitative and quantitative research methods because both are used in the literature, instructors are challenged to teach both types of methods in one course. The purpose of this article is to illustrate one method used to teach qualitative research methods to undergraduate social work students. The model presents a narrative analysis and moves students from raw data to an analytical model.
