AbstractIn addition to the use as biofuel, the utilization of poplar wood as a raw material from short-rotation coppice (SRC) became increasingly important in recent years. Because poplar SRCs are harvested during dormant season, wood storage is of particular importance to guarantee wood processing industries a continuous wood supply. The study focuses on the change of physical and chemical properties of poplar wood by the application of different storage strategies over a 9-month period. Therefore, a total amount of 60 m3 test log piles were set up in 2018 for six different storage variants: compact piles, compact piles with water sprinkling and oxygen exclusion, each with logs in bark and debarked. The effects on wood moisture content, equilibrium moisture content and wood density (ρ0) and the changes in the chemical components lignin, cellulose, hemicellulose and extracts were determined and evaluated. As expected, the wood moisture content changed in a wide range over the storage period, depending on the variant. The levels of equilibrium moisture (changes from − 4% to − 13.1%) as well as wood density (changes from − 2.61% to − 9.01%) decreased for all variants between start and end of storage. Changes in chemical composition were observed for all storage variants, which indicates microbial activity supporting the assumption that the observed mass loss is driven by wood decay. Overall, changes were more homogeneous for logs in compact piles compared to the other storage methods. Considering the weather conditions during the investigated period, the results indicate that storage in compact piles with debarked logs is the best method for the conservation of poplar wood from SRC.

The deformation behavior of high-pressure (HP)-treated hybrid poplar wood, the subsequent swelling, and the equilibrium moisture content properties of HP-densified wood were evaluated using a modified delayed strain/set-recovery method of cyclic humidification-dehumidification at different relative humidity (RH) conditions. The HP treatment resulted in significant compression (densification) of the wood under different treatment conditions. For treated wood samples, the value of delayed elastic strain was relatively small when stored at 20 °C and 65% RH, which indicated that HP-densified wood possessed dimensional stability. The HP-compressed poplar yielded lower equilibrium moisture content than the control at low RH, while major increases were observed at high RH above 76%. Marginal of thickness swelling was observed under the cyclic humidification-dehumidification method in the low RH range while significant swelling occurred at high RH. Conventional methods would only show results that were appropriate for storage at high RH environments. The RH threshold for set-recovery of HP-compressed wood was between 33% and 54% for optimal use, and the extent of set-recovery increased rapidly when RH was between 85% and 95%. Such differences could not be recognized with the conventional methods. In addition, the prolonged holding time significantly decreased the RH threshold value (P < 0.05).

AbstractThe potential of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy coupled with partial least-squares (PLS) regression was used to determine the moisture content and basic density of poplar wood chips. NIR spectra collected from the surface of wood chips were used to develop calibration models for moisture content and basic density predication, and various spectral preprocessing techniques were applied to improve the accuracy and robustness of the prediction models. The models were tested using totally independent sample sets and exhibited acceptable predictive performance for moisture content (coefficient of determination for prediction [R2p] = 0.98 and standard error of prediction [SEP] = 2.51 percent) and basic density (R2p = 0.87 and SEP = 17.61 kg m–3). In addition, the effect of moisture variations on prediction of basic density was investigated based on NIR spectra from wood chips under various moisture levels. The results demonstrated that broad absorption bands from water molecules, especially when free water exists in the cell lumen, overlap with informative signals related to wood properties and weaken the calibration relation between spectral features and basic density. Thus, maintaining wood chips in a low and even moisture state would help achieve reliable estimates of wood density by NIR analysis models.

SummaryA stable, lyophilized AHF reference plasma has been prepared from pooled plasma from at least 50 normal healthy donors and standardized against a primary standard of fresh plasma from 20 healthy male donors aged 20 to 40. Average AHF potency of a typical lot is 98.8%, and moisture content is less than 0.5%. Under storage at -25° C, this AHF reference plasma is stable for at least 18 months. It has been used in several major coagulation laboratories, and has given consistently satisfactory and reproducible results in AHF assays.

The Fock test is widely used for assessing the reactivity of dissolving pulp. The objective of this study was to modify the method to improve the repeatability of the test. Various parameters that affect the repeatability of the Fock test were investigated. The results showed that Fock reactivity is dependent on testing conditions affecting the xanthation between cellulose and carbon disulfide, such as the moisture content of the pulp sample, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentration, xanthation temperature, carbon disulfide dosage, and xanthation time. The repeatability of the test was significantly improved using the following modified testing procedure: air dried sample in the constant temperature/humidity room, xanthation temperature of 66°F (19°C) in a water bath, xanthation time of 3 h, NaOH concentration of 9% (w/w), and 1.3 mL carbon disulfide.
