Background and aims – During a survey of the soil diatom flora of the sub-Antarctic islands in the southern Indian Ocean, an unknown small-celled naviculoid taxon was discovered living in small cracks in cliffs bordering the ocean. The taxon showed a set of morphological features only found in the genus Microcostatus. However, the unknown taxon could not be identified using the currently available literature. Methods – Using both light microscopical and scanning electron microscopical techniques, the morphology of the unknown Microcostatus taxon was documented. The new taxon is described, illustrated and compared with all other similar Microcostatus taxa worldwide. Key results – Microcostatus elisabethianus possesses a unique combination of morphological features that excludes conspecificity with all other members of the genus. It is characterized by a lanceolate valve outline with protracted, elongate apices, a very large, porous conopeum reaching the valve margins and uniseriate striae composed of only one macroareola and mantle areolae restricted to the valve apices. The morphological features of the genus Microcostatus are evaluated and discussed. Notes on the occurrence and ecology of the new taxon are added.

Background and aims – A few years ago, a new survey started of the freshwater diatom flora from peatbogs of Tierra del Fuego (southern Argentina). During this survey, an unknown fragilarioid diatom belonging to the genus Distrionella that could not be identified using the currently available literature was discovered. Methods – Using both Light Microscopical and Scanning Electron Microscopical techniques, the morphology of the unknown Distrionella species has been analysed. The new taxon is properly described, illustrated and compared with all other possible similar Distrionella taxa, known worldwide. Key results – Distrionella coxiana possesses a unique combination of morphological features that excludes conspecificity with all other members of the genus; it is characterized in having narrow, linear valves with small, capitate apices. Transapical ribs, a typical feature of the genus Distrionella, are only weakly developed. One rimoportula is observed close to the apices. Both apices have well-developed apical porefields. The girdle bands bear one complete row of poroids often accompanied by a second, incomplete row of small poroids. Notes on the occurrence and ecology of the new taxon are added.

During a survey of the terrestrial diatom flora of the Maritime Antarctic Region, an unknown Luticola taxon that could not be identified using the currently available literature was observed on two islands of the South Shetland Archipelago. After a detailed morphological analysis and comparison, the unknown taxon is described as Luticola puchalskiana sp. nov. The new species can be separated from other Luticola species based on its valve dimensions, stria density and the shape of both central and terminal raphe endings. Two populations of the new taxon were observed in samples collected from terrestrial habitats. The morphology of Luticola puchalskiana is elaborately described and illustrated using both light and scanning electron microscopy observations. A comparison is made with a large number of other morphologically similar Luticola species from the entire (sub)Antarctic Region.

We present light and scanning electron microscopical observations on one new species of Prestauroneis from Vietnam. The new species, Prestauroneis genkalii Glushchenko, Kulikovskiy & Kociolek sp. nov., is described on the basis valve outline, shape of the apices, as well as striae and areolar densities. Morphology of Prestauroneis species, especially with respect to valve outline, is discussed. P. genkalii sp. nov. possesses all of the typical morphological features for the genus, including uniseriate striae covered by internal hymenes, a pseudoseptum at each apex and distal raphe ends extending onto the valve mantle. In addition, a new combination is suggested for Navicula pseudocrucicula Kobayasi, Prestauroneis pseudocrucicula (Kobayasi) Glushchenko, Kulikovskiy & Kociolek comb. nov. on the basis of type description. P. genkalii sp. nov. is the first member of the genus Prestauroneis reported for Southeast Asia.

Planothidium sheathii sp. nov., a new species from rivers in California, USA, is described based on light and scanning electron microscopy. P. sheathii has broadly lanceolate to elliptic valves with obtusely rounded apices and a unique combination of morphological features, as follows: 1) cavum with broad hood aperture that flares out at the valve margin with open borders fused with the neighboring virgae on SV, 2) multiseriate striae, composed of five to six rows of same sized areolae on both valves, interrupted at valve mantle junction, and 3) areolae groups on valve mantle, with rounded areolae on RV, and rounded and elongated areolae on SV. Valve morphology of P. sheathii is discussed in comparison with similar freshwater taxa, from which the new species is clearly distinct.

During a survey of the freshwater diatom flora of the sub-Antarctic Kerguelen archipelago in the southern Indian Ocean, an unknown Diatomella taxon was observed forming long colonies using linking spines. Detailed morphological analysis based on light and scanning electron microscopical observations and comparison with all known Diatomella taxa worldwide justified the description of this unknown taxon as a new species: Diatomella colonialis sp. nov. The new taxon is characterized by the presence of marginal linking spines, the reduction of its raphe structure leaving only two short raphe slits near the apices, a very large axial area occupying almost the entire valve face and very short alveolate striae composed of paired areolae. The presence of these alveolate striae and the girdle structure with its typical scalariform valvocopula place this taxon in the genus Diatomella.         The new species is described and compared with other Diatomella taxa. Notes on its distribution and ecology are added.

During a survey of the freshwater diatom flora of the sub-Antarctic Campbell Island, located in the southern Pacific Ocean, an unknown freshwater diatom was observed forming long colonies using linking spines. Detailed morphological analysis based on light and scanning electron microscopical observations and comparison with all known Frankophila taxa worldwide justified the description of this unknown taxon as a new species within the genus Frankophila: Frankophila dalevittii Van de Vijver & Goeyers sp. nov. The new taxon is characterized by the presence of well-developed linking spines, the absence of external raphe slits and the presence of internal raphe slits, biseriate striae composed of relatively large areolae and a large axial area. Despite the absence of the external raphe slits, the species is best placed within the genus Frankophila. The new species is described and illustrated and compared with all other Frankophila taxa.

We present light and scanning electron microscopical observations on one new species of Neidiomorpha from Vietnam. The new species, Nediomorpha gusevii Glushchenko, Kulikovskiy & Kociolek sp. nov., is described on the basis valve outline, shape of the apices, as well as striae and areolae densities. Morphology of Neidiomorpha species, especially on the basis valve outline, is discussed. Neidiomorpha gusevii sp. nov. possesses all of the typical morphological features for the genus, including valves that have longitudinal canals with pleuriseriate coverings, constrictions about the center, rostrate apices, uniseriate striae, absence of renilimbii, straight raphe with small central pores and hooked distal raphe ends going to mantle, and lacking lacinia. Our new species is compared with other three known species from the genus Neidiomorpha, including N. binodis, N. binodiforme and N. sichuaniana. N. gusevii sp. nov. is the first species of Neidiomorpha documented with LM and SEM from Southeast Asia.

Four taxa belonging to the complex of species around Achnanthidium minutissimum were found during the ongoing taxonomic revision of the Antarctic freshwater and limno-terrestrial diatom flora. Two taxa were previously described as Achnanthidium lailae and A. sieminskae. Two others were formerly identified as A. minutissimum but detailed light and scanning electron microscopical observations revealed sufficient morphological differences compared to the type of A. minutissimum, to justify their separation and description as new taxa: Achnanthidium indistinctum and A. maritimo-antarcticum. The morphology and ecology of all four taxa are discussed comparing the species with morphologically similar taxa. The biogeographical consequences of the splitting of the former A. minutissimum complex in the Antarctic Region are discussed.

During a survey of the freshwater diatom flora of the sub-Antarctic region (Iles Kerguelen and Iles Crozet) in the southern Indian Ocean, an unknown Cyclotella taxon was observed that was formerly identified as the presumed cosmopolitan C. meneghinana. Detailed morphological analysis based on light and scanning electron microscopical observations and comparison with several similar Cyclotella taxa worldwide justified the description of this unknown taxon as a new species: Cyclotella deceusteriana sp. nov. The new taxon is characterized by the presence of marginal fultoportulae on every costa, hyaline furrows between the raised marginal parts on which the striae are located, 2, occasionally 1, 3 or 4 central fultoportulae and an entirely flat, smooth, relatively small central area. The new species is described and compared with other Cyclotella taxa. Notes on its distribution and ecology are added.

During a survey of the diatom flora of the Adegoy River (Krasnodar Territory, Russia), an unknown Fragilaria species (Bacillariophyta) was found that could not be identified using the currently available literature and here we describe it as a new species. The morphology of Fragilaria irregularis sp. nov. was studied using light and scanning electron microscopy and compared to similar species including Fragilaria deformis, F. rinoi, F. septentrionalis and Fragilariforma bicapitata. It differed from these taxa in several characters. Most observed valves showed an irregular striation pattern, a feature not observed in other species. Other important differences include valve outline (linear with parallel margins) and stria density (7–14 in 10 µm, lower compared to all other species). The new taxon has a linear valve outline with parallel to weakly convex margins, subcapitate apices and a very irregular, coarse striation pattern.
