Ultraviolet-B radiation (UVB) reaching the earth's surface has increased due to human-caused stratospheric ozone depletion. Whereas the harmful effects of UVB on aquatic organisms are well studied at the molecular and cellular level, recent studies have also begun to address behavioural changes caused by sublethal amounts of UVB. However, the behavioural consequences of long-term exposure to ecologically relevant UVB levels over several life stages are virtually unknown, particularly with regard to predator–prey behaviour. We found increased predator-inspection behaviour together with a smaller body length in three-spined sticklebacks ( Gasterosteus aculeatus ) after fish were exposed for about seven months to natural sunlight conditions with enhanced UVB, compared with full siblings exposed to natural sunlight only. The observed change in antipredator behaviour may reflect a direct behavioural response mediated through UVB-induced oxidative stress during development. Alternatively, the smaller body size in UVB-exposed fish may result in an increased inspection effort allowing them to spend more time foraging. Our findings suggest that, within the scope of environmental change, UVB radiation constitutes an important stress factor by eliciting behavioural responses that influence crucial ecological processes, such as predator–prey interactions.

Background. Insufficient received ultraviolet B radiation (UV) is regarded as the main environmental risk factor (RF) for MS in vitamin D deficiency hypothesis. Nevertheless, geomagnetic disturbance (GMD) has also been proposed as a potential trigger for MS in GMD hypothesis. The aim of this study was to investigate which of these mentioned RF is correlated with long-term ultradecadal MS incidence. Methods. After a systematic search, long-term incidence reports of the United Kingdom (UK), Denmark, Tayside County, Nordland County, the Orkney, and Shetland Islands were selected for this retrospective time-series study. Possible lead-lag relationships between MS incidence, GMD, and UV were evaluated by cross-correlation analysis. Results. Significant positive correlations between GMD and MS incidence were seen in Tayside County (at lag of 2 years: rS = 0.38), Denmark (peak correlation at lag of 2 years: rS = 0.53), and UK (at lag of 1 year: rS = 0.50). We found a positive correlation between received UV and MS incidences in the Nordland at lag of 1 year (rS = 0.49). Conclusion. This study found significant positive correlations between alterations in GMD with alterations in long-term MS incidence in three out of six studied locations and supports the GMD hypothesis. The observed significant correlation between MS and UV is positive; hence it is not supportive for UV related vitamin D deficiency hypothesis.

Objectives: Psoriasis is a common chronic recurrent dermatitis. Accumulating observations show gut microbiota dysbiosis in psoriasis. We intend to further investigate the relationship between intestinal microbiota and psoriasis development.Design: We first performed an epidemiological investigation on differences of gastrointestinal discomfort symptoms between patients with psoriasis and general population. Then variation of gut microbiota in patients with psoriasis (un)treated with acitretin plus narrow-band ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) was analyzed by 16S rRNA sequencing. We last compared recovery status and vital cytokines (lesion and intestine) of mouse psoriasiform models, which were transplanted with fecal microbiota from patients with psoriasis or healthy controls.Results: (1) About 85.5% of patients with psoriasis vs. 58.1% of healthy controls presented with at least one gastrointestinal symptom. The prevalence of investigated symptoms (e.g., abdominal distension and constipation) were significantly higher in patients, compared with controls (p < 0.05). Passing flatus and constipation were significantly correlated with psoriasis (p < 0.05 in both cases). (2) The abundance of Ruminococcaceae family, Coprococcus_1 genus, and Blautia genus were decreased with psoriasis improvement (p < 0.05, respectively), which had been demonstrated significantly increased in psoriasis. (3) Mice receiving psoriatic microbes transplantation showed delayed recovery of psoriasiform dermatitis and less reduction of interleukin (IL)-17A than those receiving healthy microbiota or blank control (p < 0.05 and p < 0.01, respectively).Conclusion: Multiple evidence we provided here preliminarily demonstrates the involvement of gut microbiota in the different degree of psoriasis activity. The strategy based on overall microbial communities is expected to be a promising supplementary for long-term management of psoriasis.

Solar ultraviolet-B (UV-B) irradiance that reaches the Earth’s surface acts as a biotic stressor and has the potential to modify ecological and environmental functioning. The challenges of reconstructing ultraviolent (UV) irradiance prior to the satellite era mean that there is uncertainty over long-term surface UV-B patterns, especially in relation to variations in solar activity over centennial and millennial timescales. Here, we reconstruct surface UV-B irradiance over the last 650 years using a novel UV-B proxy based on the chemical signature of pollen grains. We demonstrate a statistically significant positive relationship between the abundance of UV-B absorbing compounds in Pinus pollen and modelled solar UV-B irradiance. These results show that trends in surface UV-B follow the overall solar activity pattern over centennial timescales, and that variations in solar output are the dominant control on surface level UV-B flux, rather than solar modulated changes in ozone thickness. The Pinus biochemical response demonstrated here confirms the potential for solar activity driven surface UV-B variations to impact upon terrestrial biotas and environments over long timescales.
