To investigate the clinical effects of EH0202, a Japanese herbal supplement, on the menopausal symptoms and physical status of peri- and post-menopausal women. Thirty-two post-menopausal women (53.0±5.1 years) presented with menopausal complaints were enrolled in the clinical study. Patients were administered an herbal supplement, EH0202 (6 g/day for 6 months), and were assessed for improvement of their overall symptoms using the Greene Climacteric Scale and the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Blood pressure, skin surface blood flow and plasma lipid profiles were measured before and 1, 3 and 6 months after EH0202 administration. There was a significant decrease in the climacteric scale score (P<0.001) and VAS (P<0.0001) after 6 months of EH0202 treatment. There was a significant decrease in systolic (P<0.001) and diastolic (P<0.05) blood pressure, and a significant decrease in facial skin surface blood flow (P<0.05) after 3 months of EH0202 administration. We observed a significant decrease in plasma TG and LDL-cholesterol concentrations after 3 months of EH0202 administration (P<0.05). EH0202 (MACH) reduced blood pressure, excess facial skin blood flow (flushing) and abnormal lipid levels, as well as clinically improved menopausal symptoms in post-menopausal women. In post-menopausal women, this product appears to help maintain normal biological function and improves quality of life.

ABSTRACT Mating between natural a/a and α/α strains of Candida albicans requires that cells first switch from the white to opaque phase phenotype. However, because cells expressing the opaque phase phenotype are induced to switch back to the white phase phenotype at physiological temperature (37°C) and because opaque phase cells are highly efficient at colonizing skin, we tested whether skin, which is several degrees lower than physiological temperature, is conducive to mating. Using a model in which a mixture of a/a and α/α cells are incubated for 24 h under a cotton patch on the hairless skin of newborn mice and using scanning electron microscopy to visualize cells on skin, it was demonstrated that skin facilitates mating. In some regions of the skin, 40% of all cells had fused. All of the stages of mating observed in vitro were observed in vivo. However, some unique morphological characteristics of mating on skin were observed and are attributable to parent cell immobilization on the skin. In control experiments on glass, plastic, and silicone elastomer surfaces at 32°C, cells either failed to fuse or did so at an extremely low frequency, suggesting that unique features of the skin surface other than reduced temperature also facilitate fusion.

Abstract: Benign skin tumors are commonly found in every individual. There are various benign tumors occur on the skin surface including facial skin. The main problems of these tumors are cosmetic concerns and the possibility of malignancy. Benign skin tumors frequently found on the face are inter alia seborrheic keratoses, skin tag, syringoma, nevus pigmentosus, xanthelasma, sebaceous hyperplasia, and cyst. Several benign facial skin lesions can be diagnosed clinically as long as it is supported by careful examination with good anamnesis and proper lighting. Physicians as well as specialists must have the ability to categorize and diagnose accurately the growing lesions or tumors as benign, malignant, or undetermined in order to take further step for planning and providing treatment properly.

Lymphocytic leukemia L1210 was orignially induced in female DBA mice by painting the skin surface with 0.2% methylcholanthrene in ethyl ether. It is continuously passed in DBA, C57bl/c and BDF mice by inoculating ascites cells intraperitoneally, intramuscularly or subcutaneously. It is commonly used for biochemical studies as well as for assays of chemotherapeutic agents. Our electron microscopic studies demonstrated a virus with morphological characteristics peculiar to both type B and C virus particles. Cells of ascitic fluids, spleen, lymph nodes, thymus and bone marrow of leukemic mice revealed the presence of groups of intracytoplasmic A particles (Fig. 1) identical to those seen in mouse mammary tumors. Some cells also revealed intracisternal A particles identical to those in plasma cell tumors.
