AbstractCorrosion and corrosion-fatigue tests of the material of the pipeline, which was in operation for 41 years. It has been shown that prolonged operation reduces the parameters of resistance to fatigue and prolonged static loading in corrosive environments. It was established that the degradation of physical and mechanical properties is insignificant, Ukraine’s main gas pipelines are ready to operate at full capacity provided that timely monitoring measures are carried out.

Data of corrosion rate are obtained experimentally, values of braking coefficient, protection degree of steel 10 in 3 % aqueous solutions of detergents ML-52, MS-8 and Labomid-203 are calculated. It is found that when the composition of synthetic detergents diethylene tetraborate ammonium (DETA) composition (NH4)2B4O7·2C2H8N2·2H2O concentration of 0.5 % wt., the corrosion rate of carbon steel is significantly reduced, and the values of the braking coefficient and the protection degree increase and reach almost significant values. By removing the potentiodynamic polarization curves, it is shown that in the presence of DETA, the dissolution potentials of steel 10 are shifted to the positive side relative to the potential in the background solutions and the anode process is predominantly slowed down. Corrosion-fatigue tests indicate increase in the coefficient of cyclic strength reserve of carbon steel in aqueous solutions of synthetic detergents with the addition of DETA. The results allow us to recommend the compound diethylene tetraborate ammonium as effective anticorrosive additive to synthetic detergents used to clean parts from technological contaminants in the repair of process metallurgical plants machines.

An investigation was made into the fatigue properties of L485MB (X70) pipeline steel after 13 yr of exploitation as a crude oil pipeline material. Fatigue tests in zero-to-tension loading were carried out (i) in air, (ii) in crude oil, (iii) in a mixture of crude oil with rainwater, and (iv) in water separated from the crude oil phase. The aim of the investigation was to assess the degree of degradation of the fatigue properties of this steel due to the action of environments typical for crude oil processing and transport. The results are not directly comparable to any corrosion fatigue experienced by the crude oil pipeline, since the strain rate for the tests was higher by an order of five than the strain rate observed in typical loading cycles. The results showed that crude oil and a mixture of crude oil with rainwater had no aggressive effect on the steel in the sense of reducing its fatigue characteristics, while the separated water had an aggressive effect.

Recently, due to increasing popularity of the magnesium alloys, many studies on corrosion resistance of the magnesium alloys have been reported to improve their corrosion resistance. However, it is not clarified yet whether an electrochemical polarization curve or a corrosion rate is a good measure for the corrosion fatigue resistance or not. In the present study, corrosion fatigue tests, the weight loss test, and measurement of the electrochemical polarization curve were performed in 3% sodium chloride solution using both the extruded and the rolled Mg alloys. It was clarified that there are no differences in the corrosion fatigue lives between the extruded and the rolled Mg alloys, though they have different corrosion resistance. So, it was concluded that the corrosion fatigue characteristic does not correspond well with the trend in corrosion resistance.

The aim of the present investigation was to determine the effects of the embedding material mechanical properties on the in vitro fatigue endurance of femoral hip stems as determined following ISO standards. Acrylic cements are usually employed as embedding media; due to the high cost of surgical cements, acrylic cements for dental applications are commonly used. Two acrylic cements for dental applications were tested to determine their static mechanical properties and compared with those found for three surgical cements. The same two dental cements were also compared as embedding media in a series of ISO 7206/3 fatigue tests on a mini-size Cr-Co stem; prosthesis stress analysis using strain gauges was also performed. The mechanical tests on the different cements showed that behind the definition of acrylic cement are materials with considerably different mechanical static properties. The fatigue campaign confirmed the influence of embedding media on the results obtained from the ISO 7206/3 fatigue test. Under a load of 4200 N the stem failed after four million cycles when using one cement; it did not fail after ten million cycles when using another cement. Stress analysis with strain gauges substantially confirmed these findings.
