Failure Analysis in Concrete Structures: A Comparison of Field Data with Results from Laboratory Exposures

Abstract The corrosion of metals in reinforced concrete structures is a multibillion dollar problem that affects construction, transportation, housing, and many other industries. This report compares the widely-reported literature on salt-related corrosion with results of exposures involving no exposure to salt. Laboratory exposure results are compared with results from actual structures. The results indicate that structural cracking is far more important as a cause of corrosion than is commonly assumed.
