Abstract Well-characterized zinc coatings on steel have been prepared so that either the eta or zeta phase was present as the outermost layer. Their electrochemical behavior was studied in a range of solutions by galvanostatic anodic polarization and potentiodynamic anodic polarization scans. The corrosion products were identified using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and x-ray analysis. Results show that the solution pH has the most marked effect on electrochemical behavior and the nature of the corrosion product formed. At a given solution pH, the behavior and products formed are modified according to the concentration of chloride in the solution and the type of iron-zinc alloy layer investigated. The results are discussed in relation to the practical use of galvanized reinforcement in concrete.

The influence of small variations in the composition on the corrosion behavior of Co-Cr-Mo alloys has been studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray analysis (EDX), and electrochemical measurements. SEM and EDX data were correlated with data from in vitro corrosion measurements involving repassivation and also potentiostatic anodic polarization measurements. Specimens studied included the four alloys shown in Table 1. Corrosion tests were conducted in Hanks' physiological saline solution which has a pH of 7.4 and was held at a temperature of 37°C. Specimens were mechanically polished to a surface finish with 0.05 µm A1203, then exposed to the solution and anodically polarized at a rate of 0.006 v/min. All voltages were measured vs. the saturated calomel electrode (s.c.e.).. Specimens had breakdown potentials near 0.47V vs. s.c.e.

Background: Coal gangue was used as a catalyst in heterogeneous Fenton process for the degradation of azo dye and phenol. The influencing factors, such as solution pH gangue concentration and hydrogen peroxide dosage were investigated, and the reaction mechanism between coal gangue and hydrogen peroxide was also discussed. Methods: Experimental results showed that coal gangue has the ability to activate hydrogen peroxide to degrade environmental pollutants in aqueous solution. Under optimal conditions, after 60 minutes of treatment, more than 90.57% of reactive red dye was removed, and the removal efficiency of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) up to 72.83%. Results: Both hydroxyl radical and superoxide radical anion participated in the degradation of organic pollutant but hydroxyl radical predominated. Stability tests for coal gangue were also carried out via the continuous degradation experiment and ion leakage analysis. After five times continuous degradation, dye removal rate decreased slightly and the leached Fe was still at very low level (2.24-3.02 mg L-1). The results of Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-Ray Spectrometer (EDS) and X-Ray Powder Diffraction (XRD) indicated that coal gangue catalyst is stable after five times continuous reuse. Conclusion: The progress in this research suggested that coal gangue is a potential nature catalyst for the efficient degradation of organic pollutant in water and wastewater via the Fenton reaction.

ABSTRACTAn intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) electrolyte film of La0.8Sr 0.2Ga0.8Mg0.2O2.8 (LSGM) was fabricated using a plasma spray process. The microstructure and phase were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The electrochemical behavior of the thermal sprayed LSGM film was investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The study indicates that thermal spray can deposit a dense LSGM layer. It was found that the rapid cooling in the thermal process led to an amorphous or poor crystalline LSGM deposited layer. This amorphous structure has a significant effect on the performance of the cell. Crystallization of the deposited LSGM layer was observed during annealing between 500–600 °C. After annealing at 800 °C, the ionic conductivity of the sprayed LSGM layer can reach the same level as that of the sintered LSGM.

A novel Ag–Si–TiO2 composite was prepared via sol–gel method for removing residual formaldehyde in shiitake mushroom. The structure of Ag–Si–TiO2 composite was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. Ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy (UV-Vis) and N2 adsorption-desorption tests showed that Ag and Si co-doped decreased the band gap, the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area of the samples increased and the recombination probability of electron-hole pairs (e--h+) reduced. Effect on removal rate of formaldehyde with different Ag-Si co-doped content, formaldehyde concentration and solution pH were investigated, and the results showed that 6.0 wt%Ag-3.0 wt%Si-TiO2 samples had an optimum catalytic performance, and the degradation efficiency reached 96.6% after 40 W 365 nm UV lamp irradiation for 360 min. The kinetics of formaldehyde degradation by Ag–Si–TiO2 composite photocatalyst could be described by Langmuir-Hinshelwood first-order kinetic model.

ABSTRACTWe have investigated the surface properties of quasicrystalline and approximant phases in the Al-(Cu)-Cr-Fe system upon aging in ambient conditions. We found that some of these properties (like the electrochemical behavior, wetting or friction) slowly evolves with the length of exposure to normal atmospheric conditions, reaching a stable state only after several days. This report essentially focuses on one of these alloys, an Al65Cr27Fe8 approximant phase with g-brass structure. In a first part, we describe the effect of aging on the electrochemical behavior of this alloy and we propose an interpretation based on a simple electrical model of the oxidized surface. In a second part, we present a model describing the surface as a stacking of several layers (oxides, oxy-hydroxides, contamination) whose thickness evolves with time. The model is supported by X-ray reflectivity, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and secondary neutral mass spectroscopy measurements.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) based filters have a prospective advantage compared to the commercial filters due to their lightweight and ability to work without electricity or heat. The manganese (Mn) removal from aqueous solutions by oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (O-MWCNTs) was investigated. The filtration performance was studied under ambient conditions: the solution pH, the initial manganese concentration, and the MWCNT-filter mass. The samples of MWCNT-filters were investigated using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and rutherford backscatter spectrometry (RBS) to account for the manganese content within the MWCNT-filter. These techniques were conducted to study the oxidation effect on the morphology of MWCNTs and evaluate the oxygen functional groups and the average diameter distribution. Based on these examinations, the competence of Mn removal may exceed 91% for 50 ppm initial concentration of Mn, proposing that functionalized MWCNTs is a promising filter. The Mn removal was achieved at low pH with removal enhancement at the pH of 2. Functionalized MWCNTs based filters are promising candidate for heavy metal ions removal from industrial wastewater.

Electrochemical behavior of an alloy AgCu50, pure copper, and pure silver, respectively, was investigated by measuring the open circuit potentials using anodic potentiodynamic polarization and potentiostatic method in 0.1 moldm-3 NaOH + 0.02 moldm-3 NaCl solution, without and with adding 2-mercaptobenzothiazole in various concentrations (0.00001 - 0.001 moldm-3). Anodic polarization curves for AgCu50 alloy, showed four current peaks. Potentiostatic curves showed that values of the stationary current densities drop down with the increase of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole concentration in the electrolyte. The electrode surface was analyzed by optical microscopy after the potentiostatic oxidation. Micrographs confirmed that 2-mercaptobenzothiazole has got the inhibitory effect by forming the film of CuMBT and AgMBT which protect the electrode surface from corrosion.

In this work, FeM composites consisting of montmorillonite and variable amounts of Fe3O4 were successfully synthesized via a facile co-precipitation process. They were characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscope (TEM), N2 adsorption-desorption, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) techniques to explain the effect of Fe3O4 content on the physicochemical properties of the Fe3O4-montmorillonite (FeM) composites. The FeM composites were subsequently used as heterogeneous Fenton catalysts to activate green oxidant (H2O2) for the subsequent degradation of ofloxacin (OFL) antibiotic. The efficiency of the FeM composites was studied by varying various parameters of Fe3O4 loading on montmorillonite, catalyst dosage, initial solution pH, initial OFL concentration, different oxidants, H2O2 dosage, reaction temperature, inorganic salts, and solar irradiation. Under the conditions of 0.75 g/L FeM-10, 5 mL/L H2O2, and natural pH, almost 81% of 50 mg/L of OFL was removed within 120 min in the dark, while total organic carbon (TOC) reduction was about 56%. Moreover, the FeM-10 composite maintained high efficiency and was stable even after four continuous cycles, making it a promising candidate in real wastewater remediation.

The aim of this study was to explore a new nano-composite carbon adsorbent material for the removal of arsenic from water. The multilayer carbon nanotubes (MCNTs) were treated with different acids and/or modified with iron to create more surface COOH sites or Fe-impregnated MCNTs for the enhanced uptake of As(V). Tests were conducted as a function of initial As(V) concentrations, contact time, and solution pH. The coverage of ferric hydroxides on MCNTs and the uptake of As on Fe-MCNTs were independently confirmed by field emission scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses. With an As(V) uptake capacities of 27 mg/g on Fe-MCNTs and 14 mg/g on acid-MCNTs, the material showed superior performance for As(V) removal.

In this study, three new 3D coordination polymers (CPs), {[Cd3(L)(H2O)6]·H2O}n (1), {[Cu1.5(L)0.5(bimb)1.5]·5H2O·DMF}n (2), and {[Mn1.5(H3L)(bibp)0.5(H2O)2]·3H2O}n (3) (bimb= 1,3-bis(imidazol-1-yl)benzene, bibp= 1,4-bis((4-imidazol-1-yl)benzyl)piperazine), were prepared under solvothermal or hydrothermal conditions based on a hexadentate ligand (1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triamine hexa-acetic acid (H6L)). Structural elucidations were carried out by IR spectra along with single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, while thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) (dynamic and isothermal) and XRD techniques were used for property evaluations of the polymers. Furthermore, the fluorescence properties and detection of the Fe3+ ions in 1 were tested at room temperature, and the electrochemical behavior of 2 is also stated in this article.
