The Impact

To improve water quality and alleviate pollution in Changshou-Fuling section of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area, an analysis methodology of regional key discharge outlet based on hydrodynamic-water quality model was developed. The EFDC model was used to study the impact of different discharge outlets on the transport of contamination in the study area by using the concept of pollutant mixing zone and pollutant mixing zone per unit load. Model calibration was conducted using observed data in 2008. Results indicated that EFDC could perfectly simulate hydrodynamics characteristics and contaminant transport process. Calculated results of pollutant mixing zone per unit load showed that the discharge outlet location in Fuling is more reasonable than that in Changshou. This study provides useful information for optimization of discharge outlets location and prediction of pollutant mixing zone in the study area, which is important for the government to make water pollution control measures.

Abstract Water quality assessment is essential for water resources management. This paper presents a comprehensive evaluation of water quality conditions in three urban tributaries of the Three Gorges Reservoir, China. The Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment Water Quality Index (CCME-WQI) and Nemerow Pollution Index (NPI) approach were used in this study. Generally, the assessment results of the NPI approach are consistent with that of the CCME-WQI approach. However, the NPI method overemphasized the influence of the most serious pollutant factor, and thus this method should be used with caution for water resources managers. The CCME-WQI values indicated that the water quality conditions in the Wubu River were quite good during the period 2013–2015. Water quality conditions in the upstream sections of Yipin and Huaxi River are good. However, when the river drains through urban areas, water quality conditions greatly deteriorate due to the excessive release of household and municipal sewage, and industrial wastewater, especially for Huaxi River. Thus, waste water management becomes more and more imperative in urban regions of China. Meanwhile, assessment results indicate that the CCME-WQI approach can provide a reference for decision-makers on water resources management.

Abstract. In order to solve the problem of lack of unified evaluation criteria for water quality evaluation in the Three Gorges Reservoir under different hydrologic condition, hydraulic retention time and flow rate were calculated wih the hydrological data of 6 intact hydrological years after the 175 m impoundment in the Three Gorges Reservoir using the concept of segment capacity. Results indicate that the hydrological conditions of the Three Gorges Reservoir have obvious spatial and temporal differences. The whole river should be evaluated according to the river standard during the wet season. In the dry season, the upstream of Wanxian should be evaluated according to the river standards and the downstream of Wanxian should be evaluated according to lake standard. The tributary bay should be evaluated according to the lake standard. The conclusion obtained by this evaluation method is consistent with actual situation of the reservoir, providing a theoretical basis and technical support for the targeted protection of water environment in river-type reservoirs.
